  1. You are not giving us any information. I assume your having trouble filling the tank? If so, your Evap system has issues and must be evaluated. What codes is it throwing?
  2. The heads must be 251's, be sure to use MLS factory turbo head gaskets. The PCV arrangement may need to be modified. Pistons should be ok although new rings and cleaning the drain back holes in the pistons is always a good idea.
  3. I suspect the driveline as well. Best to disconnect it at the rear end and see how smooth the joints feel. CV 's can give a vibration on acceleration. Tire ballance is always worth checking. Enjoy your new outback, I consider the second generation to be the best ones made.
  4. Rear driveline, usually at the u-joint directly behind the transmission. CV axels can do this as well.
  5. 2004 cars issued to California had round port heads and drive by wire throttle. 2004 cars sold to the rest of the country are the same as 2003.
  6. Down at the transmission shop getting a rebuilt tranny. In the case of the delay in drive engagement on late 90's and 2000 transmission's. Trans X works perfectly to temporarily fix slow engagement. Be sure to change fluid to synthetic and replace the factory filter .
  7. Hi Bass; In Spokane try Hopkins automotive Address: 3018 N Nevada St, Spokane, WA 99207 Very good independent Subaru shop. (509) 483-3943
  8. Under normal conditions that sprocket should slide off without a puller. As you already broke a tooth just use a screwdriver to move it off the crankshaft.
  9. I agree, check the IAC valve. It is different between automatics and 5 speeds. For your 5 speed I would remove it and carefully clean inside with a q-tip and alcohol. I've had about a 50% success with that. New ones are not cheap.
  10. 2004 California outback's had a different head with single port. Yes you can. Be sure to use Subaru #642 turbo head gaskets
  11. Hi Earl; The entire wire harness and computer would need to go with the 6cly . I would change the cradle if I were you
  12. I leave the stock low beams in 00-04 . I replace the high beams with LED. Being very rural only use low beams IF there is other traffic.
  13. Hi all; My postal carrier client just showed up with her "New" 67,000 kilometer 1995 legacy GT rt hand drive. Extremely clean car. Runs perfect at the moment. Apparently after 25 years they can be imported. These are not the kind of Subaru that normally runs the gravel / muddy / snow covered roads around here. After 30 years in the Subaru business I have only had a handful of 1980's turbo cars. Certainly never a twin! I'm wondering what parts are different with this car "engine" over a US model? Air filter , oil filter , Also what maintenance / parts on the turbos is going to be necessary? What do I need to know. She is buying three more similar cars. Another turbo model and two n/a models.
  14. Pay a little more and buy a japan made or a US made valves. Avoid the china made . Use subaru # 642 mls head gaskets
  15. Oh , the tensioner piece you helicoiled is replaceable. Three bolts I think , much safer to replace this than trust a helicoil. Wrecking yard or the dealer , money & time well spent
  16. You are using the correct mark on the crankshaft. You already have the valve cover off . Reach down and try to wiggle the rockers. A bent valve will show as a very loose rocker. Or something fell in a sparkplug hole.
  17. Check the large connectors at the pass side bell housing. Make sure they are snapped in correctly.
  18. My work vehicle is a 2000 rust free 5 speed car. currently at 311,000. I routinely drive 4 hrs or more one way to work. I would drive it to Caribou, Maine or Key West FL today. Yes it uses oil as well. Clean or change the pistons. Use new NPR rings. As long as they are not allowed to get hot they are truly 400-500,000 mile motors. Tell tale on these motors is a rod bearing rattle at startup and also noticeable at float rpms while driving. If you start hearing that, start looking for a replacement longblock.
  19. I'm 5' 11" in a 2000-04 outback wagon. With seats laid flat, I can sleep on the diagonal. Head up behind drivers seat . Its not fun but it dry and warmer than on the ground. The awd system is awesome, will get you anyplace you need to be. I would not bother trying to raise one, they shouldn't need it. Of course I can't recommend a Honda CR-v here on the Subaru forum... would be a sacrilege !
  20. Hi Mark; There is a fiber doughnut on the last cat. The resonator pipe is cupped attaches with 2 bolts with springs. You will want a new doughnut and a new pair of springs and bolts. Changing is not to hard. Expect the spring bolts to be frozen and break.
