I finally got the chance to plug in the TPS. I just left it set at the idle postion and tried the car and it seems to shift normally.
-
It was flashing for a while, last time it came on solid. I wonder if I just plugged it in and left it in the idle position if it would take it out of the power mode?
-
Well, I just put an ea81 motor in an an ea82 car with this tranny. I think I'm gonna have to hook up the throttle position sensor to the carb on the ea81 for it all to work right. This has been fun.

Can someone explain the power light and the operation of the awd 4speed automatic transmission. How does the 4wd work on these cars?

I have read a lot of posts here about converting to a weber carburetor for more power, etc. Just looking through a bunch of my old junk from when I used to work with Ford pinto 2000s and 2300s, I found the Holly 5200 to give me the best performance for anything close to a stock situation. I think I may have a Weber or two down at my dads with some more parts, but what makes the Weber so special on Subarus? I quit trying to build the untimate hotrod 4 cyl Pinto 15-20 years ago, but kept most of the junk. The main problem with them was a big cam breaks timing belts and leaves you stranded . Also I went to England for a couple years in the Airforce and found out that they were lightyears ahead with getting power out of those engines. I have just done my first rebuild on an EA81 and rebuilt the carter/webber single barrel that was on it. It looked fine for that motor, I don't think that intake could handle much more even with a bigger carb adapted to it. Hey, somewhere I got some Individual carbs for a Ford 1600 with little velocity stack tunnels and the screens(no filters) and all. I wonder What these would do on a 1.8 soob motor.

I have been fixing up a car for my parents and I have just completed installing my rebuilt Ea81 out of an 82 wagon into an 89 RX. I had to do some grinding on the bell housing for the flex plate to fit and its been a lot of work getting the power steering and a/c mounted up and the belts to be aligned. I finally got all that and have started on the vacuum hoses. I have a question about the auto transmission. There are two vaccum hoses coming off of it and they were loose when I got the car. Does anybody know what they do? Kickdown maybe? Should I hook them to the intake vacuum? next is going to be the electrical part Thats going to be fun. If anybody has any advice on the electrical part, I would appreciate it. Kim.

My kit came and I have put the engine back together all but the heads. Ok, here's the deal. The kit came with 8 valve seals. The intake valve guides have a barbed type end that accepts the seals good the exhaust ones don't. I attempted to put them on the exhaust valves and they didn't go on well and I could not get the seals down to the measurement to the head that is explained in the haynes manual of .913 inch. I got the intakes down there fine. I think I am going to go back and remove them from the exhaust valves because this might cause a problem. This motor appeared to be untouched until I went into it.

The EA81 is 9mm from what I can tell and 1mm pitch. They are oddball.
-
No, I haven't recieved the kit yet. So I don't know. I am new to Subaru motors, so I will have to wait and see what all comes in the kit.
-
Now I'm confused. There is another kind? I have only seen the rubber type and a cheap o-ring type that went on Chevys(pathetic). Whats the exhaust one made of?
-
So thats normal then? Wonder what the reasoning behind that is? I have never sen this on any other type motor. I would like to put some on the exhaust anyway. I couldn't see this hurting anything.
-
I took apart my Ea81 heads today and checked out the valves and lapped them with some compound. I put them all back together until my rebuild kit arrives. I noticed that there were no valve seals on the exhaust valves, is this normal?
-
I am getting ready to rebuild my ea81(got it all apart right now). I am looking for a re-ring kit. You know the kind with all the gaskets and bearing and rings. I have been checking with calipers and have found surpisingly little wear on an engine with 170,000 miles on it. The valves and guides look fine and I'm just going to re-lap them to the seat, so I don't need those(just valve seals). The best price I have found on a re-ring kit is $150 plus shipping. Is there anything better out there? Also I'm doing an engine swap and I need a set of short flywheel bolts for an EA81 automatic. The Ea82 bolts wont fit and the 4 speed flywheel bolts are way too long.

Wow, now thats what I'm talking about. What size motor and all? -

Why the drop in milage? Just losing compression with age? -
between the Ea81 and Ea82 engines? Are the cranks and Pistons the same?

I currently have a couple of subarus and this is my question. What kind of MPG is everybody getting and what kind of setup do you have. In my old 82 GL wagon that I had for about 10 years now(half of those years parked, spare car) I used to get around 25 mpg going back and forth to work (about 15 miles one way, 1/2 interstate, 1/2 city driving). Only took it on a couple of long trips (300 miles to West Virgina)because they were predicting snow and we took the 4wd. On both of those trips, I averaged around 30 mpg. Now its just a 4 speed manual Ea81. I would figure the newer cars would do better than than this but it looks (from reading other threads) that they are no better or worse. When I first go the wagon used, a friend had a Brat with the same setup as my wagon. He got a little better hwy milage (34-35)due to his having a 5 speed and I figured it weighed less and he also only drove about 60 mph. I am getting ready to take apart my old wagon motor(which started getting really bad milage(20 or so) when it stated missing in a pull (valve problem I guess) and I intend on putting it in an 89 RX Automatic(which the motor is trashed in). Will this RX get much worse milage than the wagon? What is the weight difference? I would appreciate any info.

Whats my best option here

Yeah, I have seen a few of these listed. Even saw a E82t complete for $695, but shipping can be $$$ and its a lot more than I want to spend right now. I will keep you in mind if I decide to sell it. -

This little car really is in perfect shape. The only problems with it at all(besides the motor) is the bumpers are dull and some parts of the paint are a littl faded, the radio has been removed, and there is a very minor tear in the driver's seat. I am tempted to put more money into this car, but I have 6 cars and 2 motorcycles as it is and need to start getting rid of some. -

Thats what I want to hear, Milesfox. I'm hoping to do a re-ring job on the Ea81 and then bolt it into the RX. I will be pulling the Ea81 on Monday afternoon(I'm a shift worker). I want to check it out and see what it needs before buying anything. I just want this car to be reliable so my parents can drive it and not worry. -

Well, here I am replying to my own post. Forget about the ea82 engine. I took the oil pan off and its full of metal. I don't know what the hell he did to that thing. I can move the crank and feel play in all the rods, so I figure it totally hosed up. I guess I'm going with the old Ea81 from my wagon into the rx for sure now. I have to pull the motor from the wagon and see what was making it miss at an idle. I might end up having no motor at all for the rx -
I was going to do and engine swap but now I'm having second thoughts. I bought a 1989 rx from my nephew who bought it from another guy. Anyway, it blew a head gasket with the first guy and my nephew bought it from him and attempted to fix it He took the head off and got a new head gasket and attempted to put it on. Only he put the wrong bolts in the wrong holes and broke one of the long ones off in a short hole (17 years old ). So I helped him drill the broken bolt out of the block and then we drilled and tapped the hole out for a 1/2 20 bolt. Anyways he puts it back together and it runs like a champ for a couple weeks then it blows another headgasket(he was racing somebody). He takes the head back off and screws up some more bolt holes, so now there are three that are 1/2 20 bolts and one in the middle he put a helicoil in. He puts it back together and it misses and puts out white smoke from the start this time. He gives up on it, says its a dog and lets it sit around for a few months and then I bought it for 200 bucks. The body is in excellent shape and the interior is good too. Since its and automatic, I want to fix it up for my older mom and day to have as a spare car. I have thought of removing the ea81 motor from an old wagon that I have and using it, but then that might be a pain with the wiring and all. I have this EA82 turbo motor pulled out and in my basement/garage and the head doesn't look that bad. It has some small cracks between the valves and the warpage is about .003 from checking with a straight edge and a feeler gauge. The reason that it smoked and missed the last time was because the helicoil he used was sticking out of the block a few thousandths and this caused the headgasket not to seal right. The block and all the different bolts and stuff has me worried though. I think that I did find out the real reason for the orignal and second blown headgasket though. the little vacuum valve thing that opens the wastegate for the turbo is seized up and wont move at all not mater what. That means that the pressure most likely went really high on it. What would ya'll recommend I do? I don't want to put a lot of money into this car. 50$ for a headgasket is outragious as it is. Should I go with the old wagon motor or try and put the EA82 back together one more time?
-
Well, the ea82 car is a 1989 RX Turbo(auto trans). It overheated and has been put back together about 3 times since and I am pulling the ea81 out of an 82 GL wagon (4 speed). I'm thinking since the RX is MPFI, that the intakes won't swap. I will have both motors to look at and see. It would be nice to keep the intake all original and just use the carb shortblock. Can this be done?
-
I am in the beginning of an engine swap. I am removing a totally hosed up turbo ea82 and replacing it with a carb model EA81. I have heard this can be done and would appreciate an info that ya'll can give me. I will be taking out the ea82 wednesday night.
