Anyone use after market guages?
zombieblues replied to zombieblues's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I won't need the sensors as this is going to be an off highway vehicle and might even lose it's doors at some point. In the long run I want a working motor (With gauges) and drive train with lights. Thinking If I get a little crazy I might install a 2 channel stereo. -
It seems it would not be too hard Check the link below. You could epoxy this on. Or are you looking for something that hides when unused? http://www.walmart.com/ip/RoadPro-RP-452-Small-Self-Extinguishing-Ashtray-Colors-May-Vary/37287323?action=product_interest&action_type=title&item_id=37287323&placement_id=irs-106-m1&strategy=PWVAV&visitor_id&category=&client_guid=7587424b-ee16-46e4-9374-65416a5cf47f&customer_id_enc&config_id=2&parent_item_id=38753715&parent_anchor_item_id=38753715&guid=1a26c38c-59f1-423c-9ce1-2e30a45c7fe2&bucket_id=irsbucketdefault&beacon_version=1.0.1&findingMethod=p13n

Most embarassing place you've been stuck in your Ru?
zombieblues replied to RavenTBK's topic in Off Road
My ball joint failed in the middle of an intersection. I felt a drop and some rubber grinding. Got out and saw the tire mostly under the car. Put it in 4wd and dragged the tire under the car. I slipped the 1/4 axle out and twisted my strut a little but it's all better now! -

I cannot remove any original emission equipment if I want it to be street legal. I thought it might have some form of ECM in the gauge cluster because it runs the door sensors and everything. So in theory I could remove the entire cluster and drive it with no problems? I just wanted to make sure there was no programming (Like the feedback thing) built into the gauges. I think legally all I HAVE to have is the speedo. But I will be going a tach with the shift light too. -

I'm not sure if I am feedback. It's the Hitachi 2 BBL and no turbo yet. I am wanting to build the dash in the middle where all the climate controls are on the 83 wagon. I am taking everything except the heater out. And you mean remove the feedback system? In Colorado I cannot register the car if the emission system has been altered. -
1983 GL 4wd wagon EA81 Is there any reason why I could not unhook the gauge cluster and just hook up some after market gauges? I figure I will need speed, tach, oil pressure and fuel. I just cannot fit that entire cluster into the new dash I am making. Does the computer go through that assembly? I know the door open sensors go through it but those will be removed anyways.

I'm trying to work in the lug conversion with the brake swap! I would not mind somehow matching a ford 9 inch rear end with the axles coming out to a ford hub/brake on the rear. I will just use duct tape and lots of JB weld haha! Really it looks like I can get all the brake parts brand new from an auto parts store. It's all parts from a 1986 Subaru GL-10 Turbo 4WD Do you happen to know if the shocks for the rear are the same too? I'm sure it would not be too difficult to weld a mount on the top end as long as the bottom bolts up. -

Thanks JesZek!! I could not remember your name but could never forget the bumblebeast!!! I wish our junkyards where the same as yours so I could match up compatible parts for the older ones! -
'85 GL Wagon for sale (Redmond, OR)
zombieblues replied to Subanubi's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Yes. -
So I've spent a little over an hour trying to find some old posts. There was one about doing a brake swap to rear discs on the ea81. Hoping it works for my 83 gl wagon. And there was another from the guy with the bumblebeast that was about different swaps for suspension and drive train. I pulled my rear tire off the wagon to look at the bearings. It was completely empty! No drum parts... The brake line wasn't even hooked up!!! So instead of putting drums back on it I wanna swap the rear hub for something like a 5 stud and I wouldn't mind swapping the rear shocks out for something better. Anyone have those links on hand or know of some good search terms for me to find em?

Building a super light AWD racer of some kind. Taking it in steps as my money comes in. Figured since it won't cost much to just go ahead and remove all wiring that isnt going to be used. Gotta replace some floor pans and fill in the floor for some rhinoliner. I got a page that says Brumby on the bottom left corner. Not sure if thats the same one you have. It just seems there were some wires missing. It shows there only being 1 speaker and I have 4. I want to remove all 4 speakers and wires. And if possible I want to remove the wires for the A/C Though mine wasn't equipped it says it is built with the option so I'm sure some of the wires and parts are there. Most of the other wires I just need to clip and replace due to bad connections/old wires. I've got the dashboard completely removed and have rerun the snake to keep it out of the way. I'm designing a custom dash to house the aftermarket gauges (Once I figure out how to do all that too!) I've got a long road ahead of me. And I have the worst time remembering to snap some progress photos to show you guys. Hopefully I can remember today before I get much further. Anyways PM sent just in case you have a different diagram then mine.

Dumb speaker question
zombieblues replied to ErikAnderson's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
The last owner of my car mounted 6x9s under the dash... Maybe that is something you could check into. you will have to reroute some wires though. -
I've searched through the old posts and have not found one with a working link for a wiring diagram. More specifically a diagram showing the wires and what they do on the wire snake inside the dash. I'm looking to remove the radio internal lights and door sensors anything that is air conditioning and any other wires I can deem not needed. Thanks for your help guys you all rock!

My 83 wagon has turned into quite the money pit. But someday I will have the coolest wagon ever!! Keep it for sure!

I'm not offended at all. I really do appreciate the help! The STI swap is never going to happen haha. I can dream right? After tearing out all the internal trim and carpet I've found a few holes that were unnoticed before. pretty much summing up that the car will never actually rally.. I'm going to call off the whole race car deal and work on making it more of a normal car that drives without falling apart. Maybe in the years to come I can see about swapping for the STI and doing a custom suspension.
-
I understand! I will be uploading images this weekend of the work I've done so far. Once I get home I'm gonna pull the gofundme page and just do it myself. I've been waiting to get this motor to pass emissions so I can actually take it to the places I need for the work. I guess I was not thinking it through with placing the gofundme so early in the build. Thank you for advise!

If I could put a supercharge LS7 and drive train I would make the weight. Haha! I'm getting so much spoob for saying I wanna race the thing. Gonna work on the practical things like the suspension and alignment stuff. I figure everything I do is still replacing the old parts with strong better ones. Maybe if I can get it built a little first then people will be more interested in seeing it bloom into the beautiful Martywagon.
-
Removed then replaced. I will have to double check the regulations but from what I understand is I can raise the height in the wells but cannot make the wider. Pretty much the area hit by rust will be removed. The regulations are ridiculous! For one of the classes that I fit into I have to keep a minimum weight of 3500 lbs. I wanted to weight alot less and might already be too light. I've done a bit of reductions already.

Car Was Running Fine Now Won't Start
zombieblues replied to jread's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I just bought a working timing light at a pawnshop for 15$ I'm sure you can find one close. And if you plan on keeping this car and working on it you may want the tool for the long run. -
My oil pressure went up to 75 after changing the oil to a 40 W 50 or something real thick. The Napa lady said thicker would be better...
-
Everyone hates on it because of the rust haha. The frame is great. The body was cleaned with something... Something that caused these crazy rust spots. The wheel wells will be cut out anyways. along with a majority of metal for the weight reduction.
-
So I've put up a go fund me and am hoping to get help from you guys! I am turning my 83 wagon into a rally car. Right now I am working on the weight reductions and the suspension. I'm hoping to participate in some races next spring and summer. It would be awesome to have a USMB rally car to get some attention to the forums. If it's allowed I will post the link below. Please tell me if it needs to be removed due to rules. If anyone could lend some time helping me with various things (Ideas on suspension, Ideas on weight reductions and drivetrains that might work with a higher powered EA81. I plan on getting most of the forged parts from RAM. Not sure about which turbo I want but will figure that out when the motor part of the build comes along. Here's the link if anyone wants to throw a few bucks towards this build. Any help at all... Even encouragement is greatly appreciated. http://www.gofundme.com/baja500racecar Any suggestions for body and paint? I am going to research bed liners and possible cover it in a rhino line... If it won't effect air and weight.

I ended up pulling my dashboard searching for a short. Last owner went crazy wiring up BS. Sorry its not much help. But hopefully you find it without needing to pull the dash!
