  1. And thank you guys for your input. If I had hair this thing would have me pulling it out. Plus I gotta pray to the subie gods that I will pass this emission test tomorrow. Even with my little after fire.
  2. Gah! 72 horse power cannot push 3400 lbs fast enough! Now I'm going to end up doing an STI motor and tranny swap if I cannot keep the itty bitty ea81
  3. Oh! A Texan! Anywhere near east Texas? I will be doing some mudding events down there once I get this thing going!
  4. Hey! When I turn my ignition on before pressing the starter my fuel pump comes on and stays on. It is really loud too! Maybe my pump was wired incorrectly by the previous owner
  5. Before I can worry about the suspension/drivetrain/lift I've gotta do something about how much my wagon weights. I am designing a customer dashboard. Using all custom guages and converting almost every electronic in the car to a manual switch. I will be removing all interior decor and cutting out the inside portion of the frame and replacing with a roll bar and support bars. As I have not started tearing the trim out I have no clue what I am getting myself into. Any pointers for shedding weight? I am going to be cutting the spare tire crap outta the hood too!
  6. Mine does this a little as well. I have the carb rebuild kit in my shed but am scared to pull my carb off.
  7. Just took the 83 wagon up the poudre canyon to Pingree park! This thing is amazing on the curves going up a mountain. Almost had me scared! When do these things start to let go around a corner? I did 50 around a full corner and didnt even squeel (at least from what I can hear over the exhaust) I am starting my weight reduction today along with starting the roll cage!
  8. And I will for sure being doing a progress thread. (It won't be as fast as some other builds) But sharing the build is half the fun!!
  9. So my buddy offered to do the work at $13 USD per hour. He also talked me out of doing the exo. So I went and bought a grine, A cutting wheel, A grinding wheel and brush wheel. We will cut anything that is not absolutely needed. I guess the body will only be the outer most layer of metal. We will weld light piping to ensure the body keeps its shape. Then an internal roll cage. I will be building a custom simple dash to house my switches (just about anything that takes power will be run through manual switches. The same guy is really wanting me to buy an older WRX and custom fab the swap. I think this is too much work and feel the EA81 will give me the power I want. I know about the transmission problems and will have to research into what can be swapped. After all the research and input from others I feel it will be more of a 1/4 car/baja style. I'm glad I got the car. It's great! I just hate that it is so complicated.
  10. Damn. Now I wanna swap to the weber!
  11. Hey! So this brings up a question I have!! I was reading the owners manual for the 1983 GL wagon. It says to shift at 26 MPH out of 1st into 2nd. This puts me at 5500 RPM. Isn't that a bit high for a 200,000 mile motor? does anyone have a suggestion for the perfect shift point. I've been riding it to around 3.5k-4k rpms.
  12. Bah I'm getting a burning smell now. Not sure what it is yet as it started on my way into work. Next week I am wanting to order internals and a rebuild kit. My idea was to get all forged internals and a nice gasket kit so I can do some form of forced induction. I found a lot of forged parts through rock auto but they do not have a full performance overhaul kit so I will need to research everything I need and part it together. Also I need to research the drive train. From what I've read the tranny can only handle up to 100 horsepower. I'm hoping to be a little above 100. Maybe one of those dual range 5 speeds. I guess a compatibility list would be nice haha. Is there anything of the sort? I.E know wheel hubs that can be installed with minimum modifications. and tranny swaps? This car seemed like it would be pretty easy to build a little "baja racer" I have welder buddies so the plan is to gut the car down to around 1500 lbs. removing a majority of the body. Build an exoskeleton and fiber body panels. Build the motor to around 200 horsepower. Throw a wicked tranny and suspension on it. Then hit some jumps.
  13. I just replaced the oil pan gasket and changed the oil!! I also installed a push button start and ignition switch!!
  14. So I've gotten the oil pan gasket changed and with NAPAs suggestion I put 20 W 50 oil in it. (Seems a little thick!!) Now I am needing to work on the rear axle or bearings (Not sure) When making a turn there is a wierd squeek/rub sound. It's worse while turning but almost always present. With me wanting to do a more rugged sand dune type GL does anyone have a suggestion for swapping the wheel hubs and bearings.... And is it possible to change out the rear axle to something a little better?? Thanks guys! I will soon post pictures of the before and after the work as I progress.
  15. I think I found a carb I will put on it. I think it is called a 68/68. still a little lost of compatible models for parts. will the brats suspension fit onto my gl? I would like to get something more performance based. in the long run I would like to use the car in the sand dunes and a little 4x4ing.
  16. I think they call it a leone? It's a station wagon/hatch back. I checked around the carb for adjustment screws and only found an idle tension. Raised the rpm to about 1200 then dropped to 800. I've found forged parts for it internally but perhaps the block is not going to handle the power? I will look into the EJ swap Thank you for your help. For the time being could you help me with identifying the carb? It only has 1 barrel and has some form of metal bowl off the passenger side. Thanks again
  17. I'm new to Subaru but have always loved them. I just bought a 1983 GL with the EA81 motor and high/low 4wd. I've found a few sites for forged parts and carbs and have read a few posts about turboing the EA81. I will look through more posts on here to find what I can. In the mean time are there any pointers for squeezing power outta this thing. I just changed the timing to 8 degrees otdc because it was running rich. Still getting a little bog when pressing the throttle from idle. I'm a little lost with the carb on this thing.it seems the air fuel mixture is done electronically?? Thanks in advanced for any suggestions!!
