Subasaurus replied to Subasaurus's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
sorry for the long wait..mechanic changed his mind and didn't want to be responsible later, i went to him on june 25th to buy it as a parts car to see it gone, he told me he knew of a junkyard place that takes cars without titles, so expect to buy a piece of subaru history on a 2018hyundai sorry for the useless thread i made back in may, got over excited about another 70's subaru i was about to snatch up, ill make sure i own the car first before talking about it :/ i sure do miss that wagon.. -

semi dropping chunks of dirt from the wheel wells on the highway, if it was a rock from the highway i would understand because its not his rock, but random chunks comming off of the semi i think its his fault. but that doesn't matter anymore since ill just replace it with my own money now, i ain't waiting months and then find out there not going to replace it. -
thats one thing i keep punching myself for, not replacing those seals, i have replaced all 8bearings (4splined in the back and 4 standard in the front) and everytime i take apart the rear drum brakes, i find bearing grease in the drum brakes, have to clean it before putting it back together. replace the seals, not sure how much they are as i never went looking for them (stupid me), bearings on the front are $20 each, and theres 4 of them, 2 on each side. if you have plans to replace the rears, they are a bit more difficult (for me) than the fronts and you have to get a race out and put another one in (with a press).

3rd cracked windshield in 2 years..
Subasaurus replied to Subasaurus's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
thank you for the tip dave, next time theres one at the junkyard i will attemp this due to the fact that only one old gen subaru arrives at the junkyard per year. well since no one has any ideas about brands, could you guys tell me how much you payed for a new windshield? to see if $220 (with the trim around the windshield) installed is a good price? windshield alone is $175, typical cars are $125 but for some reason the 3rd gen subaru windshields are $50 more.. -

1 out of? lol, pick n pull windshields are $30 (if you can salvage one) i tried 2 subarus but both cracked on me like halfway (this was when i first got the car and hadn't bought the first one yet) gave up on salvaging one pretty quick and just went to an auto glass shop to get one installed new. -

i can't pass inspection if the web comes into view of the road with the driver, so probably a foot by 2 feet rectangle it can't be cracked at. and plus it bugs the hell out of me having a cracked windshield, i have the money to replace it (again) but just want one that can withstand "more" than the other brand ones, and which one has worked best for you? or has been "tougher" than others? which ones are cheap brands and which ones are the good ones? -
when i first got my 89GL wagon it had a cracked windshield, eh 25year old car, what else do you expect, but now that this car is about to see its 5th windshield under my ownership, i think its getting ridiculous, and thats because the windshield that the car came with was a pilkington and not the original, so for all i know its had 5 and going to a 6th in its lifetime (atleast including the original subaru windshield only), it had a pilkington that was cracked when i bought it, autolite was the first one i bought, then pilkington, then solar shade, and now the solar shade just got cracked. they have all been rocks from semis, no i do not tailgate them, infact i avoid them!! the first one was a rock 3 lanes over! i have it on the dash cam, second was the car infront of me bounced a rock from their windshield to mine that came from a semi infront of him (the chances for that to happen)also got it on dashcam, the third that just happened yesterday the semi was in the left lane passing me and i get a thank you by getting a cracked windshield (also taped on my dash cam) tried contacting the company (Sunset Logistics Inc. or also known as Drive4Sunset) to see if i can get them to pay for it because $220 is kinda punishing each time and they keep sending me to a voice machine that leads nowhere, and i doubt the police would do anything, they can care less. what brand of windshield do you guys use and has cracked windshields happen to you? i have a 93 impreza that used to be my daily with a pilkington windshield that has taken 5 rocks and 2 chunks of tires to the windshield and its been perfectly fine, but the first rock that hits my GL always cracks the windshield.. :/

i guess because were all curious.. i've taken mine well above 8,000rpm (8,500-9,000, not sure since it stops at 8,000) and theres a bunch of nothing to find up there, pointless after 4,500ish on my EA-82 motor. just wanted to know how high i could get it but it scared me before ever reaching whatever i was trying to acomplish, loud little motor..

Cause of Death: Oil Explosion?
Subasaurus replied to Sapper 157's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
can't be that violent... can it? most cars at the junkyard just needed something as simple as a new alternator belt, or a new wheel bearing and its back on the road, or even just abandoned for some years with nothing wrong with it because its an old vehicle but the owner finds a newer car. "most" people just junk it to get $200 out of it, instead of investing $200 in it.Example- a 57,000mile 88 GL with a manual transmission at the junkyard, coudn't find out why it went to the junkyard, but i ended up stealing all the lifters (hydraulic lashers) from it. i also try to find the cause of death on vehicles but most of the time, i can't figure it out. -
NGK, don't bother with anything else due to price increase, and little quality increase, best price/quality ratio. got some blue ones, not sure if they are any different than black ones, thats all that O'reillys had but hey, they look cool atleast.

New owner of 1987 gl realistic expectations
Subasaurus replied to grandam88's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
got the same issue with the alternator voltage, can't have headlights, foglights, windshield wipers and A/C running at the same time, drops to like 9volts, also the alternator with 2 grooves instead of 1 has 10amps more, that was a simple upgrade that i did, i think from 50amps to 60? can't remember now, anyways about the A/C kicking on while accelerating, ive gotten used to hitting the off button when accelerating or trying to pass someone, i call it the "turbo button" but just be glad the car has A/C in the first place, theres so many 80's cars that don't have them, i have the rigged dealership "outboard" A/C. cigarrete lighter also drops my voltage and so does the blinker, funny to look at the voltage gauge when the blinker is blinking, up down up down... also the shifter linkage/bushings are super easy to change on a 2WD, make that your next project. about the revs, i idle at 650-700ish and 800 with the A/C on, then again i calibrated it at that on purpose to conserve fuel at a light or in traffic, but it also makes the alternator not put out as much, have to sacrifice something for something. highway though im fine, blasting music with a subwoofer, windshield wipers on high, A/C on, headlights and foglights on. im doing fine with the stock double groove alternator but never knew a nissan maxima fitted on the EA-82 as Wagonist stated, i will look this up further, might need this later... -
92 Loyale timing belt covers
Subasaurus replied to josiahm91's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
when these bolts are overtightened they actually break inside and just spin around, or really really hard to turn, i had so many broken that only 1 or 2 were holding the cover on each one of the 3 covers, ended up just snapping the plastic off when they refused to come out and getting the covers off of my donor/parts vehicle and i make sure to be really careful when tightening them from now on. don't really know what to recommend to you since running without the cover runs the risk of a rock jamming in there.. perhaps someone else can suggest something. -
Water in GearBox! O.o
Subasaurus replied to Loyale 2.7 Turbo's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
perhaps he was jealous of your pristine condition bumble beast? maybe he has a cheap vehicle thats falling apart while you have a good quality classic vehicle and if he can't have one, then no one can. Someone slashed all 4 of my 89 GL's tires and keyed the drivers side a year ago at school, it doesn't make me mad, infact it just makes me prouder of my vehicle- 44 replies

you might have to waste a bottle of transmission oil to get all the water out compleately, then a second bottle to refill the transmission again... don't know as i've never had this problem before- 44 replies

the only way i see it going in is through the dipstick but your vehicle was in the garage when it was raining :/ everytime its going to rain i have to check my transmission dipstick since it likes to come up about an inch, enough for water to leak in. don't know why it does it, i guess engine vibrations, every 2 days or so its alittle out, i stopped caring to push it back in and seal it every 2days so i just seal it when its going to rain, my oil dipstick does the same thing too....- 44 replies

had 1 nest only and was inbetween the engine block and intake something (forgot the name) anyways ive removed the radiator before (3times) and cleaned up between there with a garden hose. i really want to find a double core radiator, need info on year models and trims. ive heard of the drilling before but never attempted it, actually forgot about it but since the cooling fixed itself, no need to now. -

about the O2 sensor, i left it unplugged (by accident) while traveling to corpus christi for a 1day vacation to the beach, check engine light came on after driving constantly for 1hour, popped the hood, found the O2 sensor unplugged, plugged it back in and check engine light went away after 2min of driving, sooo O2 sensor is working fine -

good to know that the headgaskets are easy to change, how often should they be changed? radiator cap has been changed to another junkyard one with 60,000miles about 3 months ago, rubber looked in very good condition and was the same vehicle i had stolen lifters (hydraulic lashers) from. one question about the cap though, it says R124 88KPA 0.9, what does that mean?? A/C works great till needle goes above half, my best friends dads main job is working on A/C and heating, plus where i get mine serviced for free. (i have the dealer added A/C KIKI DIESEL off to the right of the alternator when looking at it from the front) i don't know if its still clogged. back in march 2015 i put a hose with some pressure to one end and left it running through the radiator for 30min, then afterwards 100PSI of air through it for 30 seconds. don't know if theres still "stuff" in there or if there ever was anything in the first place. -
FS: 88 EA82 wagon NEW ZEALAND
Subasaurus replied to rxleone's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
would love to buy that from you but i seem to be in another country lol. love the rims, and red trim that says Subaru on it, interesting rear bumper, can't forget those headlight washers, higher roof, interesting factory radio, wrong sided steering wheel which would be cool to have something different and front mudflaps that ive never seen before. also try posting here, you'll probably have better luck. http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/forum/52-vehicles-subaru-for-sale-trade-or-wanted/ yes you posted in the wrong section but it will most likely stay here. -
89 turbo wagon with clacking lifters.
Subasaurus replied to darsdoug's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
although some wear is normal, and you have to remember that there probably has never been a magnet there for its entire life, so you're picking up metals that would have come out since it rolled off the factory. i will be honest, that does seem alittle too much, reminds me of my dad when he did his oil change on his 2007 F-150 12,000miles later, little balls similar to that came out of it. another thing to note, theres a magnet in the transmission, and the rear differential but not in the oil pan drain plug, i added one to keep an eye on how things are going inside the engine, careful with what you buy and good luck!
