  1. Sorry, I guess this was a broad post lacking relevant information! 99 Forester. EJ25 SOHC I put TCK304 on there so it's the new style tensioner.
  2. I have a gates timing belt kit that I put on less than 20k miles ago. My car is 5 speed swapped and I have the guide installed over the crank pulley. I downshifted to pass a car yesterday on the freeway and immediately felt like I hit fuel cut. CEL started flashing, car barely kept up with traffic, bucking and hesitating violently. I figured it was something with the timing. I got home and pulled the cover off to find my crank pulley skipped a tooth. How is that possible with a newer timing belt kit and with that guide installed? I used the red spacer between the belt and guide per the gates instructions. But FWIW, I have compressed the tensioner a handful of times to remove and reinstall it but it is not leaking a drop of hydraulic fluid. Should I replace the belt kit or just re-time it and chalk this up to a fluke event that will probably never happen again?
  3. Sorry to hear of your situation, but I'm glad you found a nice little spot to settle in! PS- I can't see any of your pics. Probably just my work's dumb firewall... I'm interested to see your projects! PPS- You worked at the old place for 2 years longer than I've been alive
  4. I guess you could say I wrench a little LOL
  5. That's the general consensus. The car is extremely torque-y now and runs like a dream. But, I'm used to driving it with a 2.2 as that's what it's had for the past year or so. So I'm not surprised I notice a difference. I suppose I need to line up at a stop light next to my buddy with a stock SF forester and see who's faster lol.
  6. I've had a WRX that I had to disconnect the charcoal canister and that let me fill up.
  7. Hey there everyone! My name is Andrew. I've been lurking for quite some time but I finally joined! I definitely appreciate the WEALTH of information that this site has to offer... I have a Frankenforester that started its life as an automatic with an EJ253. It's been through 4 transplants since I've owned it - the original EJ253 popped the HG around 180k miles and then the heads were warped so I dropped a EJ22 in it. Then I got bored with the auto trans so I swapped a manual setup from a 2.5RS in it (complete with a rear LSD for awesome twisty donuts in the harsh Michigan winters ). I did the manual swap the CORRECT way, sourced an intake manifold, ECU, main ECU wire harness, and the rest of the brainboxes from an 01 Forester, so I retained all OEM functionality (minus ABS, who needs that anyway? LOL). Recently I had a friend who was getting married so me and his brother harvested my EJ22 shortblock out of my car and put WRX accessories and heads on it and swapped it into his bugeye that has been sitting in a garage at a vacant house for 6+ years. We restored it behind his back and revealed it on his wedding day, it was quite a great experience... I sourced myself an EJ25 out of an 04 Forester that had the timing belt tensioner bolt shear of and bend all the valves. I put my EJ22 heads on it and swapped it into the forester. I think that covers all 4 transplants! LOL My fozzy is my 3rd suby. I had a silver bugeye WRX back in 08, I sold that and bought a 240sx (which I regret, especially after restoring my buddy's bugeye), then 2 years ago I bough a 99 OBS that was hit light in the front end that I bought with a good engine (the one that I swapped into the Forester that was then swapped into the WRX) for $300!!! I drove the OBS for a year until I found my current 99 Forester S that I bought with the blown EJ253, and a front wheel bearing that was so bad it would cause the wheel to vibrate enough to where it caused the brake pads to force the pistons back in and make the brake pedal go straight to the floor (NOT FUN at 70mph on the freeway) for $700. It had VERY light rust on the quarters (that is getting worse ) but the body was in decent shape other than that. Came complete with the cold weather package with heated seats, mirrors, and windshield. So yeah, I suppose you could say cars (mainly Suby's) are my passion. Hell I convinced my fiancée to buy a 15 Forester . I've always been fascinated with engines since I was a kid. I've also had several DSMs which were my fun (fast) cars. Beyond that I enjoy working (LKQ), and "construction" aka-me hitting stuff with a hammer and not really having any idea what I'm doing. I did just replace my 750 sq.ft. deck which was quite the task. And I love dogs too. My 7 year old female black lab is my little sweetheart LOL
  8. Hey everyone. Been lurking for a while but finally decided to post. I have a 99 forester that started life with an EJ253 auto. I bought it with warped heads so I dropped a Phase 2 EJ22 into it from my OBS. I then swapped it to manual with a trans, torque tube, and LSD rear diff out of a 2.5RS. Then just recently I donated my EJ22 shortblock to my friend. We put WRX heads and accessories on it to make an EJ22 WRX hybrid build for his brother (who is also a good friend of mine), whose bugeye has been sitting in a garage since 09, as a wedding gift. We restored it behind his back. It was great... Anyways, I replaced my short block with a phase 2 EJ25 and kept my phase 2 single port ej22 heads. Now I understand that the typical frankenmotor swap is a phase 1 or 2 EJ25 shortblock with phase 1 EJ22 heads that have a smaller combustion chamber than my Phase 2 EJ22 heads. The car runs great and feels very responsive and torquey, but some folks are telling me I really didn't gain anything as far as compression ratio or power other than maybe a scoch of low-end to midrange torque due to the single port. tl/dr: do you get any benefit from doing a Phase II EJ25 shortblock/Phase II EJ22 single port head frankenmotor? Fel-Pro MLS headgasket used in this instance. Is compression raised at all? Do you gain torque or HP?
