Base Timing vs. Advanced Timing.......
oddcomp replied to jxavierf's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
the retarded was meant in reference to engine timing only as in advanced/retarded timing sorry for any confusion maybe we should petition for a more p/c term to describe the ignition system firing later in the combustion cycle? -

12 deg??? wow you should have a pretty large amount of power loss being that retarded in the timing setting -

base timing is the initial setting that car uses before the edu electronically advances or retards the timing whiel the engine is runing if you go try and set the base timing with out connecting the wires that tell the ecu to not adjust the timing then you will end up chasing the timing marks all around as the ecu tried to "re-correct" the timing also the ecu is programmed to start its timing advance from what it thinks is teh "base timing" so if your base is supposed to be say 15 deg btdc but it really is 18 deg btdc and the ecu assumes it starts out at 15 and tehn advances another 5 degree then the ecu incorrectly makes the timing advance to 23 degrees btdc ... depending ont he motor aand other things like turbo's and such it can eitehr be a good thing or it can preignite the fuel in the cyliders so far in advance that it tears the motor up that is my version of it .. i will let someone else with better typing skills explain how advance and retard work in relation to power and fuel economy -
off teh top of my head i would think clogged fuel filter restricting proper fuel delivery thus making it run lean and ping as far as carbon inspecting go get one of those itty bitty 1 AAA cell mag lites put it on a string pull a spark plug and drop the light into the plug hole and you can at least look in the cylinder or a simple white l.e.d light on long wires with a battery on the end willw ork well as well also check for leaks in the intake system from the maf to the throttle body and all the vacum lines ect any leaks between the maf and the motor will cause it to run lean getting more air from a leak thats not been metered by the maf sensor so its not injecting the correct amount of fuel oh and plugged injectors will restrict fuel delivery also i have 2 ea82t intake setups here with injectors and such think you can limp it down to longview? lol

just a tiny useless update sadly i pulled the motor from the wagon..too mujch time + money to acually put it back' on the road .. the good news is that my work will continue butnot in wagon form this morning i pulled a dead ea82t motor from my "new" used suby and dropped the megasquirted+edis'd xt intake'd hks ssqv b.o.v'd ford thunderchicken intercooled chevy alternated ea82t from my wagon into a nice 85 r/x 4 door 5speed dual range with lsd i hope to rewire it in the next few days and do the intercooler pipes i have taken a few pics old motor / old wagon motor install and since i have a digital video camera i lan on making a few short clips of the whole setup .. in action like on the highway some dirt maybe a few failed 4wd drifts somewhere some vids of the screen on my laptop showing what the motor is doing "thanks ed i dug up a battey pack for it now woot!!" with any luck i plan on heading up to portland internatonal raceway to get a time slip before wcss7... at leasti hope i can i iwsh i had the 80-100 bux it requires to get about 3 runs on a dyno so i could get a better tune on the motor but eh oh well i will be just happy to have a <slightly altered> subaru again on the road oof its nap time still gotta figure out how to move a large cooler with a rx hmmm -

pfft still gotta drop the beasty motor in my rx.. and rewire my injection setup oof .. umm who needs 91 ina turbo? i sure don't never did at 10 psi no intercooelr in the wagon either woot! we shall have to play rx versus rx somewhere mr junky butt hehe now.. how do i haul my big old rolling cooler in my rx.. <notice i did not say in my wagon> yay -
Putting a Hood scoop on RX
oddcomp replied to eddygordouk's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
haha someone finished my idea of making a exteded cab brat .. almost.. mine was gonna have the cab sealed in i hadda get rid of my ext brat project to make room for another subaru ... oh well i will retry it againlater. the scoop don't look 2 bad either -
dumb question... but did you actually keep the spare tire under the hood? i don't even cary a spare.. is why i ask lol but looking at the pics and the heat marks ect i would say it started somewhere near the battery and if you had the spare tire under the hood then that might have caught fire and the heat from that roasted everything else just a .00002 wild theory

toldja brian soon as i can find a wrx scoop i wanna make a narrowed fiberglass mold of it.. -
my twisted little theory ... since i did the spider intake swapover thingy is knock outhe rubber bushings from each end cut the rod off at each end or is possible cut x amount out of the center and thread the ends of what ever is left so you can install a turn buckle type of do-hicky <such a cool word do-hickey> then poof instant adjustable pitchy stopper thingy that you can actually adjust and preload it a smidge .... or unload it depending apon how you think it should work eventually i will do this in the "new/used" suby but as long as i am pretty certaini can.. delay spending more money i do not have on it for now .. the better since i am confusing myself right now.. <do not work in a low oxygen enviroment... it sucks> i will quite while i am ... at least not behind

umm i already have all the material plus i plane on a receiver hitch type of thing .. so i figure if i can put a 5-10 foot long piece of box steel in it then jack up the front of my s-10 and put the tire on the end of the bar and let the jack down.. and the weioght of the s-10+ the leverage provided by a 5-10 foot bar.. if nothing breaks that i built.. i am gonna guess a 80 lb trailer.. should be no problem .. but i could be wrong so.. eh and very sorry for your sister.. but it was also nothing that i built part of the reason i asked for suggestions/ info to prevent things like that guess my next idea i will try and refrain from asking for suggestions or something .. past my bedtime night night

-
well hell i work down the road from you in st'helen's at teh dry ice plant near dyno in fact i even know where that place you speak of is! btw i vote for custom hood scoops to fit the ea82 style hoods i can't seem to locate a wrx scoop to make a fiberglass mold of it and then narrow it i might have my little project running in about a week i'll have to bring it down
