  1. Ok, I'll keep my eye out for a late model WRX tranny. Thanks GD!
  2. So then, the EA Turbo FT4WD I have in my wagon will hold up to the EZ30 I plan on installing better than an EJ 5 speed I was thinking of swapping out later for better ratios?
  3. Oh, the 5-lug woes....having interesting issues with this project. The rear was easy, but the front? Oh my... Out with the old: Can you tell this poor roo hasn't been out and about in a while? Pulled it all out...drilled out the holes in the crossmember for the XT6 control arm to 15/32" and installed the control arm: I had to pull the sway bar and the steering rack out to give me enough room for the drill so I could drill out the holes for the bigger bolt. I used 2 bolts from the my parted out Sportage to bolt it to the car. All was going well till I ran into this little hiccup: Humm.. that won't do.... Oh, most definitely not! 92' Legacy springs are WAY too wide! So, a "quick" run to Tucson and found these: 95 Impreza sedan spring and Legacy strut - much better! After getting that straightened out, I attempted to install the CV axel, but it's too long! It's at full compression with the suspension at full droop. Somethin's wrong here....I checked Napa's web site, since that's where we got them from, and the part number of the half shaft I have, is the shorter of the two axles Napa lists What's odd, is the used Legacy axle we pulled from the donor car, is shorter than this one. Off to more solving of this interesting puzzle.... Well, after Perry Mason is over.
  4. Prepared the front struts and found all the missing hardware for the 5 lug swap. Took the front hubs to the machinist to have them looked at and the bearings replaced. Found both hubs were out of spec and would cause pre-mature failure of the bearings. Found bearings, ordered 2 new hubs, got one in today, and ran all over town looking for the proper seals. I got one hub assembly back, still waiting on the other. Cleaned one brake caliper I think I may have a sticking caliper assembly...gonna look into that tomorrow. Assisted with bleeding the brakes on my brother's XT6. Non subaru related: changed the tranny and transfer case fluids on my F350 - wow, what a mess that was! True2Blue: That's some serious electrical draw you will be installing. I hope you plan on putting a bigger alternator in there. I was poping 65A alternator (alternator is rated at 60A) fuses with a 900W audio system, aux lights, dual high powered electric cooling fans, and a SPFI conversion. Just lettin' ya know!
  5. Yeah, I've read the 6/7 encoder wheels Subaru uses are a challenge to get MS to sync with. The 36-2-2-2 seems better for the EJ series. As far as the fuel system, you say the EZ is a partial returnless? So, I'm guessing the fuel pump controller that Subaru has adjusts the fuel pressure by adjusting the fuel pump speed? That's interesting.....I wonder why the did that? If that is the case, I may need to have a separate fuel pressure regulator and possibly custom fuel rails. That shouldn't be too difficult.... BTW, how many codes does the EZ computer complain about all the time in your XT6? Thanks
  6. Ok, I'm planning to install an EZ30D into my 87 wagon. I would love to try an EZ30R, but funding says "Don't even think about it!" So, EZ30D will have to suffice. However, I want to use a standalone ECU so that I may squeeze every last drop of torque out of it and MegaSquirt seems to be a good place to start. Wiring is not a problem for me, but fabbing things are. :-\ However, I do have a machine shop and fabrication shop available, if I need that kind of work done. Hopefully, I will need very little. So, has any of you worked with MS? Thanks, Ted
  7. Replaced the starter and crank angle sensor in my parent's outback to help isolate a intermittent no start and misfire codes. Also ran it through the car was cause it was FILTHY! Now, off to diagnose brake noise on me truck.
  8. I dunno...I had a simular problem with the driver's front half shaft. I replaced about twice as many on that side than the passengers. But only on the 86.
  9. That is awesome! Great job! Now go get it dirty and take plenty of pics.
  10. I live in southern Arizona and have done 2 EJ swaps in EA82 cars. I have not had any problems doing 70+ for long distances in the desert heat. I did replace the radiator during the swap on one, the other one we used the original rad and it was fine till the air temps were over 100*. Then things started getting warm (over 220 coolant temp), but other than that I have had no problems using the EA82 radiator. I run dual 12" pusher fans tied to the EJ computer to help cooling. I second a clogged coolant passage somewhere or there is air in the passages.
  11. Hey Dave, I picked it up from Cactus Auto Sales, one of the larger used car lots in Tucson, they had a whole slew of USFS trucks. They all looked in really good shape. I picked one of 2 standard cab V10 4wd 6sp manual trucks: a F250 and a F350 - I grabbed the F350. It's the XL package so it has manual everything which reduces the amount of failures. It had 62k miles on it. I killed my sportage - it just couldn't hold up to my abuse: the tranny again, broke something in the front driveline, engine leaked like a sive, and the interior plastic was crumbling. So, I went to a truck. I now can go farther than the lifted sportage and tow 13.5K lbs if I need to. All in a stock truck. It's nice being able to crawl up the side of the mountain in low+4low at idle and do the same thing going down without ever touching the brakes. Since it is a 1-ton, it has forced me to behave while on the trail because if I get too throttle happy, the light rear end just shakes me like a steel wheel on a rock bed and the tail goes first! Only thing I miss is AWD; on wet roads, this thing is tire spin happy in 1st and second gear with no more than 1/4 throttle. Once I get to third, then all is ok. So, getting started from a stop in the wet is interesting and annoying when you need to squeeze onto a busy street.
  12. Thanks. Yes, there definitely will be! Just have to find the right moment. The only downside of a 1-ton truck is, when I'm spinning the tires, I have massive wheel hop unless there's about 900lbs in the bed. But, I can drop 8500lbs of trailer on the back and still maintain 65 in overdrive.
  13. Actually, I did go to church - both the morning and evening services. Well, the closest to donuts I got was doing about 3 mph in 4wd crab walking on the trail cause is was so rough. That's the only downside with having Dad with - he frowns very heavily on being stupid on the trail.
  14. Dad and I wandered over Montezuma Pass and checked out a couple of trails. Snapped this on our way out: That's out our back window! This was off a non-marked trail that supposedly ended in a mile, but we went about 2 miles in, but had to turn around cause it was gettin' really rough and the storm was rollin' in. It was really windy out and forgot to take some pictures. However, I did snap this one during a pit stop: We continued back to Montezuma road and decided to take the trail the other way FR2726 and ended up at the US/Mexico border: I knew we were close, but not 2 miles close! Looking towards the Huachucas: Stormy out: I turned around and zoomed in as far as I could go to get a picture of the pass: Then full digital zoom: You can almost make out the monitoring tower for the border patrol. On our way to Parker Canyon Lake, we stopped and chatted with a border patrol man, as usual, he asked how things were with the USFS and after correcting him, he said "Oh, that would explain the missing markings on the side of the truck!" It started raining afterwords, but not enough to make any mud yet. Passed a few USFS trucks and waved as we passed by, dodged a front loader and a grader while they worked on the road and ended up at the lake: Dead as a doornail! I wonder why? Very windy and raining, so, I couldn't get very many pictures. But we had a good time anyway!
  15. ooooo......he's environmentally friendly riced out! Green flames gives ya 113.7 mpg increase! On a subaru note, I parked next to a blue second gen forester thinking how to get my wagon running with an EZ30D and megasquirt.
  16. According to a few mechanics and machinists I've talked to, they don't last down here in the Arizona heat. Most of the daily driven rx-7s last about a year before the seals go and you really can't push them because they have worse cooling problems than the ea82. Besides, it's a torqueless wonder.
  17. Yeah, I would check that IAC. Have you checked your grounds and the electrical connectors to see if something is loose? Yes, that misfire code is very frustrating. I'm taking a break from it since it's making me nuts trying to diagnose the blasted thing. So, I replaced the front u-joints on my truck - Yay, no more squeaking with the hubs in!
  18. Forgive me, Grossgary, but the cheapest used first gen ODB-II ej25 ecu goes for 175 bucks that's on the opposite end of the state. We have a whole woppin' one pull-a-part and it's 90 miles away and usually has, at most, 2 subarus. (What's odd, is this area is swamped with hondas and there's hardly any in the junk yards. Does that mean somthin? ) If Emily doesn't want that ECU, I would be willing to take it for testing purposes. Quidam, I realise that can lug the engine, I certainly hear and feel when that happens - that's when I drop to 4th, but when I'm just maintaining 25 on flat ground, the cars don't mind. Well, the outback used to not mind, Now, it says, NO! Well, back to my U-Joint adventures on my truck...........
