Yup, coil. My accel finally gave up. I did check for voltage at the coil and ignition module and I had power there. My brother put the ignition module/coil assembly in his roo and it wouln't start with those. So, I then had him put my old stock coil on there and then it ran. He reinstalled the old coil and ignition module into my car again and she fired right up. I had to work on my sister's roo tonight, so I didn't get a chance to go for a test drive. Will do that tomarrow after work. Thanks guys!

This is only a guess but, you may need to do some tracing and rewiring for the neutral and park switch and you might need to figure out how the kick-down system works. Other than that, I think that's all you'll need to worry about. Again, this is only a guess from looking at the pinouts of the ECU in the FSM.

Well, that lasted real long! I made it a whole wopping mile and she died again! Now, I have no spark. I don't get it! Here's what happend: I started down the driveway, stopped, looked both ways started to move, then she bogged real bad, then took off like normal. Went for 2nd gear and bogged again. If I use more than about 1/8th throttle she was fine till I got above about 3000rpms, then no more bog. Turned around and headed back home and she then started bogging really bad then just quit. Ended up pushing the car home (I was only about 2 houses away). Put the timing light on and found no more spark. I let her sit overnight thinking somthing got too warm. I tried starting her again the next day and I still have no spark. The ECU only had the air control valve code stored. What happened? My next plan of attack is to try putting the ignitor/coil assembly in my brother's 87 wagon and see if that makes a difference.

Saw my first Subaru B9 Tribeca today!

Yeah, the front needs some serious redoing. Although, I liked the interior. It was good. I thought it had more room than my 86. Deffinatly more leg room in the back. Besides the front, I kinda like it. The new WRX front just looks stupid. It lost that aggressive look that the previous ones had. With these new front designs, I'm seeing less and less air getting into that radiator. How's that thing gonna handle 75 on the freeway with the a/c on in 115 deg weather? -
She runs! Looks like it was a flaky battery. I put a new one in and she fired up with a little help. Odd, when I checked the timing, it was right on 20 degrees! She is running smoother than before, so my guess is those gaskets were on the verge of going anyway. I did have my brother pick up a used ECU for me and I know that works in there. So, now I have a backup ECU, fuel pump, ditsy, and throttle body. I should be all set incase of fuel injection trouble. So, after replacing the head gaskets, fuel pump, ECU, and now battery my Suby is running again!:banana:Next on the list: finish the oil changes, finish the cooling system flush, and do somthing about a cold air intake. After all that, I should be good to go for a while. Thanks for all your help, guys!

Turbo vs Non-turbo radiators
subynut replied to soobscript's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Then how come the part numbers are all the same? It don't matter if it's a turbo, auto or a non turbo 5sp. What gives? All 4 parts houses here each have they're own radiator and they use the same one for all the models: single plastic core. I talked to the radiator shop here in town and he said the same thing: no two row radiators are available for that time frame roo. I even called radiators.com and performance radiator and they both said sorry, that's all I got. If my memory serves me right, those mesurments are from the one out of the xt6. -
Turbo vs Non-turbo radiators

Hummm a half inch thicker...I dont' have a half inch of clearence between my fans and my engine. Bummer -
Ok, I rechecked my timing and it's correct. Wriring is fine. She is trying, she's almost there, but not quite enough to run on her own. I still have no horn, but the fuse is good. I didn't tie into that circuit for the always on line for the ecu. There's power where there's supposed to be power, when I connect the green connectors, the fuel pump runs, the injector clicks, the other solenoids click. What is wrong with this thing? I tried putting my ecu in my brother's car and I got no spark. I also tried putting his ecu in my car and got the same thing: no spark. But I think that's because his is an 87 that originally had an auto. While mine came from a 88 manual. Guess they're different. I'm this | | close to putting the werber back on just to see if the trouble is engine related or fuel system related.
-
Nope, horn has died I'm not sure when it went, but it's dead now. Fuse is good. But my relay for the air horn compressor is not kicking on. Time to dig into that one. I'm gonna check my wiring for the ECU. I don't understand why, there's fuel in the throttle body, and I've got spark. What have I missed?

Whatever happend to that post about the guy down under that jumped his roo like, 50 feet in the air? He tweeked the unibody but good!
-
Sorry for the late reply, bad weather and crazy days at work.:-\ Anyways, I just checked the cams and they are 180 out, the ditsy is pointing straight back with the pass side cam at 315 and the flywheel at the tdc mark. I havn't done a compression check since the headgasket replacement. That will be next on the list. Any other ideas? My batt I think is shot from all this deep cycle discharging and recharging. It ain't holden a charge very well anymore. I dont' know what happend, but Suby has just given up and won't start to save the life of me.
-
I've jumped my roo a number of times and all I've been able to do is kill 2 sets of front wheel bearrings, 1 set of front struts, rear struts need to be done and motor/engine mounts. Tranny took about 10000 miles of harsh practiclly no clutch shifting before a shifting fork gave way and now that tranny is stuck in second gear. Engine has takin' running at 230 deg for about 200 miles at 65, and doin donuts at 7krpm five or six times--head gaskets let go. Tried doing a burnout on dry pavement and all I got was alot of wheel hop and shook my pioneer cd player to death. Ummm......don't beat on them too hard, they do break.
-
Yes, it did bring it up some. The SPFI pistons have a 9.5:1 ratio, so with the heads decked, I would guess at maybe 10:1? Not really sure.
-
Ok, just finished doing a headgasket overhaul. Put new gaskets on, cleaned things up some, re-route the grounds for the ECU to a better point, put oil in, and water/cleaner in cooling system. Hit the starter....same thing, no start! I gots fuel, spark, air, and no codes. WHAT GIVES????!?? Batt's a little weak, charging overnight to see if that makes any difference. Any other ideas I might have missed? :banghead: I'm tired of driving Dad's outback, it's got too much horsepower! I want to drive my Suby! help???

Lower gears, using stock drive & 31" tires ?
subynut replied to Scott in Bellingham's topic in Off Road
2:1 reduction and 4.44s would be nice. Too bad you're all the way up in WA, my brother's got a toasted 3sp auto that he doesn't need anymore. -

Where do you find bigger radiators? -
I thnk it was around 60 a side for the cam regrind. Here's they're website: http://www.deltacam.com I am getting compression readings of around 150. My siblings' roos are about 120ish. I have no probelm running regular fuel in there. Although, Suby is happiest on Chevron. As far as the EJ conversion goes: From what I've read here, you would need the engine, ECU, and wriring harness. Prefrebly out of a manual tranny roo: less wires. I think you use the EA82 clutch and flywheel, just redrill the flywheel to fit the EJ22. You can also do a search and you'll find many a post on the subject.
-
Here's some ideas: 1: 2" cat back exhaust 2: Just swap out the enitre air box with one of those cone air filters. 3: Delta Camshaft in WA can help you there. 4: Well, as far as I can tell, there's really no way to bore it. But, I think the SPFI pistons still have higher compression ratio than MPFI. You could put those in there. And, deck the heads no more then 10 thousanths. I've got a specially built engine in mine: SPFI pistons, decked heads, and the Torque grind from Delta Camshaft. That really boosted the power on my Suby. When I switched to SPFI, that improved my mileage and hiway performance. Or, you could just put an EJ 22 in there. It needs an adaptor plate to mount the EJ engine to the EA series tranny.

I ran a mechanical oil pressure guage. I had to get one of those extension kits to make it fit. Here's some pics I took of the setup, hope they give you an idea: http://usmb.net/gallery/view_album.php?page=1

Ok, looks like it's research time.

Ok, dumb question of the day: Why goto the 2.2 instead of the 2.5? Stronger? More reliable? Even tho it's got less horses? Please enlighten me.
