Yeah, I put these on: The wheel and tire together weigh less than the original white spoke steelie rims alone! Suby feels "light" on her wheels now. I didn't think you could feel less unsprung weight!
-
Jack up the rear, slide underneath, and wiggle the drive shaft at all the U-joints. Check for play. To check wheel berrings, grab the wheel from the top and bottom and try to rock the wheel. If it does, check your axel nut, if that's ok, then it's prolly a wheel bearing. Dat make sense?

Lug nuts tight? Dat can also cause that sound.

85 Wagon wont go over 30MPH
subynut replied to sregor13's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Could also check for a bad spark plug wire. I lost one and was just BARELY able to hold 55 mph in 4th gear and on flat terrain. -
Changing Transmission Fluid DIY
subynut replied to fsub's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Yup, and you'll need a good size breaker bar to crack it loose if it hasn't been done before. Mine was on there TIGHT, used a 18" breaker bar and a lotta pullin. Also, I would recommend putting teflon tape on the threads of the plug. Dat way it don't leak. -
Hey, it's called thinking outside the box!

When I had my air horns on my roof, I just ran the hose down the drivers side A pillar inside the rain gutter and behind the fender. Then I just drilled a hole into the engine compartment and mounted the air compressor right next to the wiper motor. I ended up relocated the horns under the hood cause they kept getting clogged with bugs. Darn mesquitos. Don't see why U couln't do the same thing with wiring aux lights up there.

Boy, do I know what THAT means. Was driving my bro's suby through our "dirt road course" and came too fast into the corner and hit an embankment. Oops.

Superlite Wheels

Yeah, how much and is the offset right? This is good news! -
Don't know how mquch of this applies since mine is a wagon and part time 4wd, so it only applies to dirt. Before I put the LSD in, I had a fair amount of understeer going in and out of the corners. Now she feels more neutral, doesn't want to over or under steer. Just kinda goes around the corner. I can induce a slide with a quick stab of the brakes to start sliding, then jump back on the throttle to straighten out. Kinda hard to 'splain. 180? Start tuning, jab the brakes to get sliding. At about 90 degrees, hit 1st, stab throttle, and aaarrrroounnnnd we go! WEEEE!!!

Ha! Try driving though a rock garden or REALLY soft sand. 4Lo ain't low enough even with my 185/80 13s. Singletrack, Great looking wagon! Looks very nice!

Yup. He's right!^ -
Any codes? CEL on?
-
Yup, dat's what I use. Are you changing the fluid? If so, then U need to add that LSD additive: Posi-trac or somthing to that name. Said it was for Posi and LSD.

Temp Gauge reading on EA81??
subynut replied to stansgl's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Mine runs about 1/2 with the Subaru T-stat (190). After I put a REAL guage in, she runs about 210 in stop and go traffic and the efans running. Out on the hiway doing up to 60, both fans are off and reading about 205. Flat out driving, around 210-215. Granted, this is an EA82, But it gives ya an idea. -
Yup, dat's it.

tire size with pug wheels and r&r transmission
subynut replied to wingnwing's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
My brother is running 195/60 R14s on his and he has no rubbing at all. However, he has not fully loaded it yet. Dunno, does two 100lb dogs in the back count as fully loaded? -
I did it! Pics to prove it!
subynut replied to Sweet82's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
That is CUTE! I like it! Wow, 26" tires? They look little, but grearing is a major factor to tire size when U cant change the R&P. :-\ -
Yup, Gotta love those Subaru engineers!
-
Yeah, my original struts had the adjusters on them. I had mine all the way up. Went through CV axels about every 3k-5k miles! That's with almost all hiway miles with a Sunday afternoon off road trip in the mix!

Ahhhh......THERE U are! I was just about 2 send U an email.

oil adapters and seat brackets
subynut replied to Alex C's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Yup, it'll work. Subaru uses the same oil filter for the EA81, EA82 and ER27. -
Took her out on the freeway....WOW
subynut replied to subynut's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Advance is running off the port on the carby. Checked the mech. advance, that is working. Vac advance is operating also. Tryied running the timing at 20 deg STILL no pinging! However, the tach started jumping a little at 20. So, I dropped it a little ( Don't know how much, didn't have the t-light attatched) and that solved that prob. Intristing, very intristing. She is running rather rich, don't know if that makes any differance or not, just thought I'd let ya know. I did pick up some jets and hopfully will get those in today and see what that will do. -
Took a trip up to Tucson today. Ran her flat out a few times, 95 easily! Most of the time I was just using the primary, just used the secondary when I need to accelerate quickly. Didn't use 4th at all; 5th gear the whole way! Happy RPM range is 3k to about 4.5k. Well, with the exhaust and carby setup I have at this point. Running 14 deg timing and havn't heard one ping! I How far can I go? Vac at idle (750 RPM) is about 16Hg; up in Tucson, I saw 19! This engine ROCKS!
