Maybe a piece of your clutch let go and is rattling around inside. Or a throwout bearing? I am curious to hear what it could be.

Rust
vtwinjunkie replied to Tseekins's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVX
I have a 1996 legacy that lived in VA its entire life. It is starting to show signs of rust on the drivers side beneath the doors as well as above the rear wheel in the quarter panel. It also has a few spots on the undercarriage none of which are all that bad ( I suspect this has something to do with where it has been its whole life). If you search my previous posts you will see pics detailing this. With that being said I also have a 2005 outback with no signs of rust anywhere on the exterior or engine compartment and very minimal If at all surface rust on a few spots underneath. The previous owner had this car all over the us from Washington state, to Luisianna, back to burning man festival out in the desert for a bit and finally living the last few years of its life before I purchased it in MD. It has been all over and is in excellent condition despite minimal maintenance (And I would also assume general car care), as he seemed to take more of a reactionary stance on the matter. My 2016 wrx is too new to tell, haha not a speck of rust yet. From my first two cars I can conclude that subaru seems to be getting better with its vehicle corrosion protection, I would assume this has to do with advances in technology and metal treatments/ paint available. If it were me, I would feel comfortable purchasing any car newer than 2004 as I know they had the same body style from 2005-2009 aside from your general PPI that you would do with any car. Just my 2 cents -
after Pulling the plugs out and checking gap/condition....specified for the 2.2's is .039-.043 they fall outside of this range being all around .055 Rather than re-gap and throw them back in I decided to upgrade the copper plugs (after going through service records I found that they had 35k miles on them) with NGK iridium plugs. Once gap checked and thrown in, It runs 10x better and I cant recreate the issue anymore....I will keep everyone posted if it comes back

Greetings all. I have a 1996 2.2 legacy with a misfire code that goes away with an ecu reset (disconnect the negative batt terminal for a bit and reconnect). This tells me the issue is not a mechanical issue.... so I was thinking it had to be some sort of sensor going out or maybe a MAF or throttle body issue? Anyone have any thoughts? As I mentioned, once I reset the ECU the problem goes away for a while. I can drive the car around town for a week without it coming back! But it does come back.

Would this fit? http://www.ebay.com/itm/02-03-04-05-06-07-SUBARU-IMPREZA-4-11-GEARS-OEM-REAR-DIFFERENTIAL-CARRIER-GEAR-/381717675290?hash=item58e0257d1a:g:AHEAAOSwzJ5Xcuyy&vxp=mtr or this? http://www.ebay.com/itm/REAR-CARRIER-ASSEMBLY-SUBARU-LEGACY-00-01-02-03-04-05-06-07-08-09-2-5L/291877095621?_trksid=p2047675.c100005.m1851&_trkparms=aid%3D222007%26algo%3DSIC.MBE%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D20160617090737%26meid%3Db12e52e462a14a72ab27c3bbc888c0ae%26pid%3D100005%26rk%3D2%26rkt%3D6%26sd%3D381717675290

Thanks guys. If you havent noticed, The source of all of my questions over the past few weeks is basically me trying to get a feel for if I should be thinking about selling this car or not. I purchased it at a good deal (thinking I wouldnt need to put much into it) in hopes of getting it running for my dad to use as a daily but including the purchase price I already have a thousand into it and it needs 2 new tires (2 were just replaced before I got it) to have all 4 matching perfectly, a timing belt/water pump/cam seal, a powersteering pump (noticed it leaking yesterday while under the car), a small oil leak at the valve cover and rear brakes will need to be done soon. That being said, I have hundreds more to put into this just to get it running reliably and I just dont know if its worth it to me to do so. I cannot give my dad something that needs a bunch of work as he isnt mechanically inclined enough to keep up with it, and I have no desire to keep something that I couldnt sell it to make what I have into it if I needed to....It just doesnt make sense financially to me. I already have my 2016 wrx and my 2005 outback which I love more than anything and I cannot bear to part with one of them to keep this old thing... I the thought of another subaru toy but I am torn on what to do!

Yea. I appreciate the comments but you diddnt answer the question..too much? The thing about VA (northern va in particular) is that we have alot of cities close together all of which in the vicinity of Washington DC....This translates to alot of people, which means alot of money to spend on road maintenance and cleanup. This in turn equals to the OVER USE of salt and road chemicals in winter time..... The only other place this car has been is north carolina (Bought the car off my buddy so I know the entire history).

When I had a chance to get my Legacy up in the air this weekend I noted all the rust on the underside. Should this concern me? 1996 legacy 2.2 I was thinking of sanding down and applying POR-15 to these locations and keeping an eye on them. Thoughts? Front subframe below radiator (by far the worst of the rust): Rear Frame surface rust forming: Rear Subframe Rust forming: Driver side Rear fender well had what looked like surface rust and I knocked it out to see how deep it went! haha. I also have a few more spots below the rear driver side door and below the front driver side door but they are much much smaller.

Cool, It is still actually in the car. I am not sure how long its been like this (just got the car running) and Its not too bad yet. If I drive the car on the highway with the windows down I cannot hear it and if the windows are up over 65 mph I cannot hear it either (road noise is louder). I may just keep driving it around town until it gets really loud before I take it apart to see. My friend said It would probably last a while. so this one will fit? http://www.ebay.com/itm/08-16-Subaru-Impreza-Rear-Differential-Carrier-Assembly-4-11-Ratio-55K-OEM-LKQ-/311694488615?fits=Make%3ASubaru&hash=item4892707427:g:xWoAAOSwvzRX0x~E&vxp=mtr Ebay says it wont. or this its cheaper! http://www.ebay.com/itm/99-13-Subrau-Forester-Rear-Differential-Carrier-Assembly-4-11-Ratio-120K-OEM-LKQ-/361712342591?fits=Make%3ASubaru&hash=item5437bc563f:g:LW8AAOSw-kdXyjnq&vxp=mtr

Update. Took it to a shop that a buddy works at and got it up on the air. He and I both listened through a stethoscope and it sounds like the Pinion bearing (perhaps subaru calls it either pinion or the intermediate bearing). Trying to figure out which rear I have as I may be getting another from a junkyard. If the price is right.

Curious. I am going to do a few drain and fills this weekend to my 05 outback 2.5i When I went to the autoparts store I was confused with the plethora of different ATF's on the market. how do I know which one works for me? will this work? https://www.walmart.com/ip/17253576?wmlspartner=wlpa&adid=22222222227024403558&wl0=&wl1=g&wl2=c&wl3=60968584008&wl4=pla-87559965648&wl5=9061285&wl6=&wl7=&wl8=&wl9=pla&wl10=8175035&wl11=online&wl12=17253576&wl13=&veh=sem
