  1. Great idea. I thought about it but havent tried that yet. I will give it a shot tomorrow after work. curious though... If that changes it, what would it be indicative of?
  2. Ill take a video of the noise. Its certainly the rear end though. So if it is the pinion, what are my next steps? can I rebuild that? I feel like I can set lash and all that if needed I have done a rear end on a old ford back in college. Does it fail completely or just get louder and louder?
  3. Thats the crazy part. I saw no glitter in the fluid at all. But the whine is much louder than anything I have ever noticed during normal operating conditions of any vehicle that I have owned. It goes away while I floor the throttle down (and is evident when I drive normally) and comes back as I am coasting.
  4. So the rear diff fluid was dirty (but not black) and did not smell burned. I guess I will be putting my money on that bearing being the culprit.
  5. I thought the same...But I am a bit concerned that with 180k miles I cannot find any maintenance that points directly to the diff fluid being done (which boggles me) since they did everything else it seems.
  6. 1996 Legacy 2.2 that I am getting back on the road. Just got it inspected now I can work out the rest of the kinks. Today I noticed a whining noise coming from the rear. The noise starts at about 20mph. It gets louder as the car increases with speed. It seems to go away if I am harder on the throttle and come back when I coast. It remains evident even if I swerve the car side to side while coasting. At first I thought that the noise was coming from the rear passenger side (I was thinking wheel bearing) but now I am not so sure. I have yet to check the condition of the rear diff fluid but I plan to do this in the morning. I purchased some GL-5 to flush out the rear tomorrow just in case if it looks bad. Any thoughts?
  7. I would never pay a dealer to that other stuff. That can be done yourself or by a local mechanic much cheaper. also factor in an alignment after you do the front axle shaft seals.
  8. Just curious, why is the 95 2.2 so good? reason: I just picked up a 96 2.2
  9. curious, How did the car drive with the bad mount? I feel like it would have Alot of vibration at idle?
  10. Currently looking at this timing belt kit https://www.rallysportdirect.com/fits/1996-subaru-legacy-l-2-2/timing-belts/gat-tckwp254-gates-timing-belt-kit-w-water-pump?gclid=CNyIh-_Vks4CFZNZhgodq7EEMw I have used the gates kit on my 05 as well as an 08 a4 that I have had all with success. I have heard asin mentioned. also found this kit http://www.partsgeek.com/gbproducts/DC/394-05255688.html?utm_content=DN&utm_term=1990-1998+Subaru+Legacy+Timing+Belt+Kit+Aisin+TKF-002+90-98+Subaru+Timing+Belt+Kit+1993&fp=pp&gbm=a&utm_source=google&utm_medium=ff&utm_campaign=PartsGeek+Google+Base&gclid=CI6qqtrfk84CFUtbhgodAuoHLA&ad=47433970452
  11. A few ppl have mentioned that I do the timing belt but it was done in 2011 with 122k on it. Why would I do it again? If the answer is piece of mind that Is perfectly acceptable, Just curious.
  12. The shop is Asian Auto Service in va Also, The exhaust was welded on after the cats. they must have rusted and just welded them back on. sheesh.
  13. def would believe that the pan is most likely warped or something. I saw signs of RTV grey around it. I will have to drop it and see the gasket. I will have to check the water pump. no signs of leaking externally but I will get up closer when I have more time. oh yea....I purchased it today, so its mine!
  14. yea. I was a bit concerned about the work that was actually done. To have the trans leaking like it is even though they have been there 4 times....is a bit concerning. same for the oil leak at the valve cover. sheesh. This shop is robbing people blind.
  15. Finally got a chance to look at the car. both outer axle shaft seals in the front are blown and need replacement. ac works though!
  16. Good to know, I will have a look at his receipts and see if it talks about this. I have done the timing belt on my 2005 (2.5i) But I diddnt even look at the oil pump when I did mine. Everything was bone dry up front.
  17. Were the head gaskets a thing on these? He had said that the valve covers were done but diddnt mention them.
  18. Did you have a link to the one you bought? I would pay the $80 (cheaper than 120 for a "spectra premium" on rock auto) to have a spare laying around. Second, I have a 2005 2.5i outback, think the walbro would work with it? I am not sure what if any issues could be caused by running a bigger fuel pump than stock if needed.
