I just bought a 98 legacy gt for parts. The body has a lot of rust got it mainly for the wheels and the low mileage engine. Noticed that the struts didn't look too old it does ride really nice. I know the struts and the rest of the suspension is the same as my 97 impreza. I was wondering I can't seem to find anything about it does the gt have a sport suspension or is it the same the legacy?

It finally got hot enough and figured it was time to fix the ac in the impreza. Leather seats suck in summertime.Pulled the cap and found out it had a little pressure in it. So picked up a quick charge kit sure enough the ac was blowing cold I was happy but then noticed it had a check engine light. Pulled the code it was the knock sensor. Have a new one to put in,just no time to do it right now, so cleared the code. Started it up no check engine light. Cool. Turn on the ac check engine light comes on. Knock sensor. Anybody else have this problem?

Ya its probably a good idea to pass on it. Not knowing if it runs or not and if it does what it sounds like. The engine is nice and clean. That should've been my first clue. The other was the body was really nice and the interior is about spotless so something is majorly wrong with it. Well anyhow I found another one that has about 130k on it and has a 90 day warranty for about $100 more than pull a part that's my best bet. Its for a impreza i was swapping the 2.2 out for a 2.5 give it a little more power. Thanks for all the advice

Found a low mileage 2.5 dohc at the local pull a part. Its a 97 outback It has 119k on the odo. The only problem is the front of the engine is taken off the covers,timing belt,tensioner,pulleys are all gone rest of the engine is complete. All the cams turn without any resistance I just couldn't get a good grip on the crank to turn it. The oil that was left in it looked nice and clean. From what I could tell underneath the head gaskets weren't leaking. My question is do you think that it would be worth taking the chance that the engine is good? The rest if the car is pretty clean for an ohio car. Looks like the car was taken care of. Think its worth the risk?

I finally did get the manifold to seal. Im not sure what the previous owner did to it. They made the holes bigger on the ypipe and must have done it with it on the car because the threaded hole on the head is half gone leaving only a few threads on two of them to thread the studs into. Its not leaking right now. I was thinking of using a helicoil on them but I think the holes are too screwed up. I figured if I couldn't get it sealed up id have to change the heads and I had the 2.5 heads and intake already. That's one route that I can go. Also just found out my buddy has a set of 2.2 heads off a 95. I think I might use them instead it might be a lot simpler and easier.

I have a 97 impreza with a 2.2 bought it about two months ago. Has an exhaust leak since I bought it, I went to fix it today I thought it was a blown out gasket on the manifold. Well come to find out I was partially correct. I could tell the previous owner messed up the bolts holding the exhaust onto the head. Two where somewhat stripped out. I got it somewhat fixed by double gasketing them should hold for a little while till I'm able to fix it better. My question is I got a set of heads off a 98 2.5 dohc and intake. They came off a running engine just had a rod knock. They have around 1000 miles on them since they where check out and then the engine got the knock. Being as Im going to have to change the heads on the 2.2 in the impreza. The bolt holes are really bad I was really surpized that I got a bolt to halfway thread in. Can I put the 2.5 heads on the 2.2? I can't seem to find any info on it. If so what head gaskets will I have to use? Thanks for any info.

The 2.2 that's in the car runs good though it doesn't seem to have the same power as the 95 2.2 that was in the car that the 97 replaced. The 95 had major rust issues on the rear struts. I picked up a 98 outback parts car that the previous owner just replaced the head gaskets timing belt,all new pulleys,tensioner about 1000 miles ago and found out the rear shock tower was gone so I bought it for the drive train. It runs beautifully only hear the injectors tick while its running. The issues with the 2.5 headgaskets etc..do concern me but I figured it would be a nice power upgrade and if it goes bad I can always throw the 2.2 back in it.

Well it ended up I didn't get the 95 fwd impreza. The guy I was getting it off of backed out of the deal. Oh well worked out for the better anyhow I found a 97 outback sport that's in really good shape for the same price. The drivers quarter panel has a rust spot the size of a half dollar. I can fix that easily enough. Unlike the one I'm driving right now that the right rear strut tower is about gone.

Ya the parts car is awd. I didn't know that the exhaust was different. Thanks for the info. The captive nuts aren't too much fun I've dealt with them on trailing arms before. I'm hoping to be able to unbolt the top the struts trailing arm brackets and the crossmember. Rolling it under the car in one big chunk. Should be able to do it all in a weekend. Gonna have to wait till its a little warmer though.

I was thinking of maybe trying to take the front and rear cross members out of the parts car and rolling them under the car. I figure the worst part of its going to be the wiring and the gas tank. I'm still a little up in the air about doing the swap but I guess I'd have a better car in the end or at least nicer body parts for my other impreza.

Finally got to check and see if the tensioner was making the noise. When I took off the drivers side timing cover I noticed that the ac idler pulley was rubbing on the cover,started it up the engine is a little noisy when cold but once warmed up pretty much all you could hear is the injectors ticking. Everything under the cover looked new. The tensioner looked good. So I guess it must have been the ac compressor or the pulley thats making the noise. Thanks everybody for the help.

The outback I'm getting the parts off of is pretty rusty,the rear shock tower is rusted out. I think I'm going to get a case of pb blaster to get it apart. I'll soak them down real good. I had a couple of those captive nuts break off on a impreza I parted out ya no fun. Its one of the perks of living in the rust belt. I think it will be best just to do it all at once. I should be able to get it all done over a weekend

I have a 93 impreza that I'm putting all the lift parts off a 98 outback(body mounts,struts..etc) and had a question. Being as its my daily driver and won't be able to do it all at once can't have the car off the road for very long. Would it hurt anything to just lift the rear and wait say in a week do everything in the front of the car. I'm might put the outback struts on the front to even it out a little. Would this be OK to do or should I try to get it all done at once?

I'll check the tensioner,I think he said that a new one was put on I'm not sure tho. After thinking about it the noise did seem like it was coming from the front of the engine. I was going to change the oil and filter because on the 2.2 in the impreza was noisy when I ran 10w 40 but when I put 5w 30 and it quieted down I'm not sure what brand of headgaskets were used he did say that they were a four layer gasket. Hopefully get to check it out tomorrow.
