Sadly the gopher was my late Nana's.. And we are either going to give it to grandma or sell it... So I am not aloud to mod it :-\ Although if I was, it'd be 4WD (two motors), lifted, maybe some 14"tires, better gearing, lots more gutsy, and probably a lower seating position.

People seem to say we got heaps here... But I don't see as big of a percentage per old subie to RX ratio as you have in the US. We can quite happily put the rear discs on no questions asked. I think the real thing here is our junk yards don't have as many "newer" cars then yours. You talk about pulling EJ's at the junkyard... we're lucky to find a EFI car in our junk yards. Either Australia is kinder on cars, or theres more poor people that keep them going then in the US. ... What was this topic about again? lol, sorry for all the hijacking.

I've had a couple of chats to some Aussies about this idea and think it would be awesome. I wonder how many sets you should ship before the postage charge is ridiculuos. I'd take anyone up on the offer to ship some to Aus, just if I had the money right now...

I guess you do

EA82 with quad headlights?
Phizinza replied to Phizinza's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I guess Australia didn't get any DL's and this guy put the DL lights on his RX to be different. Interesting. Weird how MY DL's had single headlights and GL's had quad, and then they reversed that.. :-\ -
Ok... I gotta know. first time I saw this was on a RX sedan in the city I live near (Adelaide.) Then I saw pics of a wagon on this forum with them. And just the other day I came across this page http://www.cardomain.com/ride/242915 Was this a standard thing on some of the models? Which models were these? Or was it a optional feature? Whats the deal with them?

the "U-pullIt" near me has normal 'good' tyres at like $15 each, another $14 for a steel rim, or $22 for alloy's. But if you pick anything off the racks they have it is even more. And there isn't much difference in the dollar. But I guess a set of rear disc brakes for a old subie is worth $500 here, so... :-\ we get ripped off, but I guess it must be for a good reason.
-
Your lucky.. Here if you want tyres you have to have the rims too, cos they won't remove them for you... And all up it isn't cheap.

How much lift is possible on the rear driveshafts before they are at such an angle that they wouldn't last a month? Wouldn't the angle on the propshaft be a little odd?

*offtopic* I like those tires! Almost makes me think about continuing to mod for offroading...

Saab wheels and sube == saabube?
Phizinza replied to bgd73's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I have to say, that guy had some very weird tastes.... You can always look for 6 stud jap mags, and do some hub drilling. -
What to do with that donor sube...
Phizinza replied to bgd73's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
... my parents bought one of these http://www.kimberleykampers.com/kamper/action.php Takes 2 to 3 mins to put up, and about 10 to take down with two people. So much better then a tent I reckon... Go for it! -
As far as I can tell the reason for this is because some lift kits don't lift the rear swing arm, but in stead drop the diff down and let the swing arm "swing" down. Personally I prefer the look of the swing arm dropped, but I can see how leaving it in stock position can help. I don't know how the Ozified ones are made though, it looks like the swing arm drops down too.

Are all EA-81's the same?
Phizinza replied to soobcollektor's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
You will probably find the 86 has a much better carb on it (and maybe a bigger carb to manifold inlet size.) If possible use the 86's carb... -
This is what I call most tools, my name for them should discribe them pretty well. I call a adjustible spanner a adjustible spanner, or sometimes a AFS (any f%^#&*$ size), or a open ended spanner, an open ended. or theres the ring spanner. But yeah, there is some weird stuff with the terms for tools between that big ocean..

Probably the hydro lifters are half dead... Don't try and adjust them. I'm not sure what you can do about it because I haven't ever tried fixing them before. Although my brother did pull his out of his 2.2t 626, cleaned them up, oiled them, put them back in, and it was AWFUL for about 100km(62miles) Then they quieted down and were pretty good. But you have to split the case to do this on a EA81 I think. Or, the engine might just want some nice new oil. -

Are you gonna get cooling to that intercooler? -

Phizinza replied to bgd73's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
With subie trailers you want to get a FWD one, or at least the FWD swing arms and hubs. Other wise you just have a silly amount of weight and drag on the diff, shafts and brakes. -
Seems they don't do the subie 4x140 to XxXXX (I didn't see anything there, maybe they do custom?) you could use the 6x5.5 (6x139.7mm) stud to 5 or 4 stud..

Saab wheels and sube == saabube?
Phizinza replied to bgd73's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Only problem I can see with your method is the wheels might only fit the hub they were centered on. Thus you would not be able to move the wheels around the car to even the wear... And spare might be a little hard to do. Unless you get all the studs VERY accurate. -

Sounds all interesting, when do you think you'll have pictures for us? -

... http://rockcrawler-mrt.com/boltpatternref.html says that Saab wheels are 4x114.3mm or 4x4-1/2"... -
Strange. When I do mine up I use a wheel brace (+ shaped tool with when end about 7" long and different sized sockets on each end, not sure if only Aussies call them a "wheel brace") and I can do them up as tight as I want with only using my hands. I wouldn't think you'd be able to strip 12 by 1.25mm steel threads with only your hands. Sounds like you got some dodgy studs, I'd say get them nocked out and new ones put in, maybe try and get your money back if its worth the time.
