has anyone built there own lockers ???
Phizinza replied to longtrackrmk's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
What metal is it made of? Have you tested it? Does it work well on the street? Does it act as good as a LSD or as good as a locked rear? How long would this sort of device last do you think? BTW, nice work. -
Finally Finished with my lift! **With Wheels!!!**

rear disc brakes, can I use front rotors?
Phizinza replied to Phizinza's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
we got a few RX's. But here in australia we keep cars on the road a lot longer it seems. T e local junkyards near me only have a couple of EFI cars, most of the cars are older then 86... I can get a rear disc setup for $450-500 AUD locally. Or I could get a set shipped from the US for about $200USD ($270AUD.) And if they are $350 from NZ, I'd prefer to wait 12weeks for a set from the US. Like I said before, this post is about saving on postage, but it doesn't seem fesable. I don't think they are worth $500. but under $300 and i'm interested. -
Interesting. In 4WD my car will quite happily coast on a straight. Maybe because my tyres are fairly new and are all the same? I feel no power loss in 4WD vs FWD... Maybe it's different for others? The only time I feel my gearbox binding is when pulling into carparks. Maybe tight city conering would be bad too.. I only use 4WD on the road when I'm pushing the car near it's limits, and its so easy just to throw it in FWD for carparks and intersections (you don't even need the clutch) just remember to do it before turning.. I'm on a mission to see how much it takes to bind a 4sp apart... I'm almost at the point where I might put a AWD box in my car, if they keep closing all the good offroad spots. I still say AWD FTW.
-
But if you compensate for this in the strut lift you also need that BFH for the strut towers... Not what I like to do to mine nice lttle roo.
-
Explain to my simple mind this.. The wheels are always going to be turning, what difference does it make if the engine helps them or not? They are spinning weight. they will slow your car down just as much if you have drive to them or not... Surely?

Personally I like traction. I think the subaru AWD system is made to do a job, and Subarus have been built to do the same job. If you want a car that drifts, get a nissan. I'm not saying i think drifting is stupid, I think it takes talent and is a skilled profession, what I'm saying is a FT4WD or AWD subies arnt the cars you should do it in. Also you would have to be idiotic to do it on the road. Track day only sport. I also put 0-60 before burnouts... AWD/4WD FTW! (just so you know, i was a idiot once and drifted my sisters nissan around a few wet corners)

Phizinza replied to Phizinza's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
This is basically what this thread is about. I just thought maybe I wouldn't have to ship all the parts, but it sounds like I would... I'll send a few msg around to NZ. They have much 'better' import laws (less customs tax i think.) Cheers -
?? That doesn't work for subies mate... they have all the running gear spining all at the same time. Because we don't have locking hubs we get the rear dragging the car back when in FWD. I just like FWD for the handling, please just agree to disagree with me I've had enough arguing. But, if I had AWD, theres no way I'd go and do a RWD conversion.. Youre going to be turning all the parts anyway, so it's not going to give you more power. It may dyno higher in 2WD, but when your on the road it's all spinning, so you may as well have it driven.

3" strut extensions with only 2" crossmember extensions will give you more positive (bad) camber. I suggest getting more clearence via tire sizing.
-
I've been driving my Brumby in 4WD and it handles amazing with the 215/60's.. I'm not a huge fan of RWD, but if you like it, enjoy! If you want to know for sure if you have a rear LSD, there should be a sticker on it that has LSD in big print, next to that should be a 3.700

Yeah, I have one in my Liberty. So on that page it id just refering to the style of the car as EA81, not the actual engine number... I think they need to revise that page, as it leads to miss information. Anyway, that's for the info. Never got the STD's here in Aus.

rear disc brakes, can I use front rotors?
Phizinza replied to Phizinza's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Yeah, I figured that out when comparing rear shafts to front shafts... :-/ I was just thinking it would be nice to get the hubs from the US, and then use front vented rotors and calipers. It would save a lot on shipping. Rear disc brakes are so over priced here. So what bolt pattern is the rotor to hub? Maybe I could still fab something up if I just got the hubs... hmm.. -

Could a front caliper be used on the back with the rear rotor? Are the caliper attaching bolts the same distance apart? What bolt pattern is it that holds the rotors to the hubs? on the front it is 100x4. Is it different for the rear? -
1100cc motorcycle engine and tranny in a justy?
Phizinza replied to offroadsubaruguy's topic in Subaru Transplants
Another thing is torque. These bike engines may have high HP ratings, but that's because they rev at 12K to 14K RPM. Been done to lots of other cars before. Sometimes people keep the cars gearbox and just have 4th (straight thru gear) and reverse. Personlly I'd use a flat four in a justy, but that's just me. -
*not directed at your video, but just a general option to video making* With transitions, only use them when the two sence your putting next to each other look some what the same. If they are fairly different just cut straight to it. I find it makes it more professional looking if you do that.

Looks like a load of fun. The only river we have here that is "a river" and not "a creek" is the murry. But you how that is... it's all dry. Everything thing is so dry.. Umm, well, it just rained, so I guess I should go for a drive to find some mud. Anyway... who was the third person?

Do you have metal recyclers over there? I have a local guy here who is willing to pick up cars and take them to get recycled. Better then going to land fill.. Although good dumps have metal recyclers go through them anyhow.

Yeah, I learnt those leasons too... Water fording is great fun, when you get it right.. I wise it was a bit more wet here. They just stopped people from driving in the offroad play ground I had only 30mins from my place.. It's a pi*s but I guess it's going to happen. Now I guess I'll just have to go places "illegally" to have fun. Soon I will have to mod my Brumby to be good on the street as I am losing all the good places to offroad!

I never noticed a difference there between Aus/NZ and the rest of the world... Check these two pics: Subaru Brat Subaru Brumby(Aus) I think it's to do with regulations we have over here. And NZ either have them to or just got these model because it was a Australasia thing. Nice find. All mine so far have cost a fair bit.

My bro's planning to paint his wagon in desert camo.. to suit the aussie outback.. I think I'll keep mine red. But it is getting a bit rough.

Body Pannels for 1986 BRAT
Phizinza replied to rallybrat86's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
But glass isn't the same... I think the hatches and coupes are the same, but the Brats are slightly different. Still might fit but not as good. Thanks for correcting me. I'll have to remember all that. Although I thought the MY was started with the 79 wagons... must be wrong there. Maybe that's a preduction build date, not a compliance date? -
Momentum + water = very wet disty (in my case only two cyl'ders working)I haven't got my ute stuck in water yet, but my bro did... and got it really wet inside Took 2 hours of cleaning to cry it up. Love the little ute Waimaks! I so much want one of those with the quad lights!
