    tires

The reason for not going more then 28" tires is the gearing. Even with my 27" M/T's its a pain to drive, at traffic lights I either have to ride the heck out of my clutch or put it in 4WD LO. 26" will only give you 1.75" more ground clearance then a fully stock subie. Remember the "lift kit" is only a body lift, that means it lifts the body off the suspension, diff, drive shafts, gearbox and engine. Hard choice; to cut, or not to cut, that is the question. All the 6 lug patten gives you is bigger range of wheels to pick from. One problem is when you go for a normal 15" toyota wheel it sticks out of the fenders a fair bit, so it would be illegal (where I come from anyhow, check your states rules.) If you are only going 26" you could get away with using 14" wheels. You can get somes that fit off of Pug's or other 80's subarus. I think theres a page on this site with a list of all the known stock Subaru wheels that fit the 4 lug patten.
  2. about 160kph in my duel carb Brumby. I have M/T tyres now, so I am limited to 120kph. I would think a turbo EA82 should do about 105mph But I don't really know.
  3. My headgaskets didn't go. My exhuast studs did. So I had to take both heads off and get them welded, thats the ULTRA short version of the story anyhow. Hopefully after re-torquing and re adjusting my tappets I will be able to put the rocker covers on without them leaking...... at the moment I'm kinda using a little oil, nothing to bad tho Also gotta fix the coolent leak on the thermo housing.
  4. Right. I'll re-torque them tomorrow. I've already driven a bit tho... hope its all still good.
  5. Mmmmmmm snow... Wish I got that here, then I'd have to put the ice studs in my M/T's Anyway, nice place, but a little cold for me anyhow.
  6. Ahh. may as well post up mine. Rig: 2" lifted 89 Brumby/Brat. EA81, Duel carbies, 2" pipe, 27" mudders, 14" steelies, Cut front fenders, modded mud flaps, 3" rollbar, bullbar, 12" sub behind the drivers seat Pics: More/bigger pictures at http://webmaster.beverleypaine.com/gallary.html Sorry for the delay in download time. On-board video setup coming, videos on my site soon I hope!
  7. I don't have one of your lift kits. But I went to check out your new page and found the link takes me to the skid plate html. And not all your pages have the link on them. You might want to change that I'm from australia so the gun laws are strict here. But can you really own a 1919/MP5/M249 ect ect legally in america?? Thats just crazy...
  8. Hey everyone. I just got my EA81 back together!!!! and its working !!!!!! So I was just wondering when I should re-torque the new head gaskets... I heard/read somewhere that about 1000KM is right. But I'm not too sure. The gaskets don't say anything on the packaging. Just wondering what fellow subie nuts do! IT RUNS !!! IT DRIVES!!! gotta see if it still offroads now :D !!! can't belive its working again. Its been over a month of trying to get it working. I've taken the engine out. Had to fix a CV joint after it poped out while jacking the gearbox up. I think I finally fix the exhuast stud problem. I'll post about that some other time. I still can't belive it is working. Though that old EA81 would never kick it up again :-\
  9. The pod filter should makes things sound a lot better I think with a little work you could have a much better setup. Instead of using the original airbox you could copy my prototype and maybe get smoother air flow. Heres a few pictures for you this pic was for the ultimate snorkle tread, but you can see my idea would work for your idea. I have duel carbies, so you don't have to worry about having two of these things just one for you americans. I'm not saying your setup sucks, it will work fine. But I think with something like this you would be a lot happier. And I think it would look neater. So, get out ya ruler and mesure ya carbie up and head off down to the hardware store. I would really like to see my prototype in action, but have never got the filter to do anything about it.

    ORV poll

I can't vote. I don't agree with either of them. I think you should only be aloud to drive on tracks that are made for offroading. And I don't think these types of vehicles are a major source of environmental damage. So, I can not vote.
  11. Yes, I made sure the crank was in the right position. I will try adjusting it hot when I get the motor running again and see what it does. Only thing there is it hurts when you touch anything under the rocker cover :-\ Still waiting on getting a head back from a guy who is welding the exhaust studs. Hope I get it by tomorrow!
  12. In my manual it says to adjust the tappets when the engine is cold. But I was told by a mechanic that offen fixs old subaru's that I should adjust them when engine is hot. The engine is a EA81 with solid lifters. Hot or cold? I've adjusted them cold and they seem to tap pretty loud.
  13. Yeah, weird how other stuff always gets in the way of fun car stuff. When you get the wheels, send my a pic So, you gonna wait till you get a lift before you fit tyres to them? Or put some roadies on?
  14. Don't forget the $480 is Australian dollars. So $315USD = $415AUD (and also every thing over here is more just because.) $600 for a carb or the EA81 sounds like a ..... Anyway, I wouldn't buy it. After all for $1000 (and a fair bit of work) you could fit a old EJ20 (non turbo) in there Brumby Boy. I hear you can get a S/H weber for $100 + $50 odd for the adapter plate on AUSubaru. New carbies always cost a bucket load of cash. EA81 stock has 76HP and 100 odd ft-lb. A old EJ20 would have around 110HP and 130? ft-lb... I don't know what a weber can do for a EA81, but I don't think it would get anywhere near 110HP... Hey, hows that rollbar coming along?
  15. Not good if you walk away from your car on the trails
  16. I have a incredibly good single range 4sp. And I also have a not so good deul range 4sp, as in it doesn't like driving in reverse and grinds gears. Can I swap all the gear parts and maybe even the 4WD gear out of the single range into the duel range? Just keeping the LO gear out of the duel range?
  17. Yeah. See when driving normally you shouldn't even need a fan. I had my elextric fan die on me and if I drove under 3500rpm it was fine, but when you stop and idol it over heats pretty quick. I'll try taking the fan off and see how it goes
  18. they were still putting the 1600's in subies in the 80's? Interesting. I have decided EA81's are crap, I want a EJ.. (the story to that one is too long to go into)
  19. Is it ok to remove the clutched fan on a EA82 and just leave the electric one in there? The clutch on the fan is dead and it runs all the time now. Makes for a very loud car. I just thought it would sound better and run at the optimal temp if there is only a electric fan in there. My EA81 Brat only has a electric fan and runs fine, only gets a little hot while offroading. So, is it ok to take this clutch fan out? Do I have to put another electric fan in to make up for it? Thanks for any imput.
  20. I will look into that. I was thinking of making my own, cos I like making things But it may just be a lot easier getting one thats already made. Thanks.
  21. Its a replacment S/R gearbox It doesn't have the deul range part on the box. Thats why it might of been welded at the lever in a odd place. Its said because the gearbox was smooth as, and the lever wasn't floppy on it. Ohwell, just makes it a easier job putting the engine in my Brat as I dont have to put the gear box in too.. I really wanted that gearbox in my Brat too. Maybe I can sell it to someone.
  22. True. I have mesured a difference of +/- 1cm wide on three different 13" tyres. I guess the bigger you get the bigger the difference is.
  23. Yeah, thats what I was worried about. The car drives, but I can only move the 4WD lever between two positions, what seem like 2WD and 4WD HI. But the dash lights say 4WD and 4WD LO. I'm confused. But I look at the two lever thing when I get the car in the carport and start disconnecting stuff off the engine and gearbox.
