  1. I'd like to be the 21st But for now I have just another EA81 in good condition to go in. And maybe a gearbox swap too, just another 4sp manual. If I find a cheap EJ22 with AWD I'll do the swap.
  2. Not to be picky but I have 27x8.5x14's (215/75R14's). So, "much" wider is 1cm? 225mm is 8.85inch, so 225 wide tyres are only .35 inch wider then 8.5inch tyres. Sorry, just had to post that. (no offence)
  3. The dash has a 4WD LO light, and when you move the selector into what drives like 4WD HI the LO light comes on (so there is a LO switch on the gearbox?) When you select 2WD it shows 4WD light (no LO light). Is there anyway I can look at the gearbox and see if its a low range one? Is it low range just because theres a switch thats wired upto the dash. Is there anything on the gearbox I can use to determain if its D/R? Thanks. Also, do these gearboxes get stuck so you can't push it into low range sometimes? I've had my brat one stuck in 4WD and can go between HI and LO but not 2WD, I just push real hard on the lever while the engine is running with the clutch in and it fixes it.
  4. Subarino, thats was cool. Not my type of music, but all to there own. That sedan looked a little sick Amazing to see a offroad video go for so long and still be wicked. Most go for a min and after 5 seconds seem wimpish. You guys in WA have a sweet playground. I'm gonna have to drop this new engine and gearbox into my brat and find some better places to drive. Great work, best offroad video I have seen yet (that includes other vehicals.) I still feel said for that sedans engine tho lol
  5. Hey everyone! I got anyother wreck today of a 82 wagon (I got a wrecked 83 wagon the other week) The gearbox in the 82 is sweet, feels much better then every other old subie gearbox I have felt. And after adjusting the tappets the engine runs these commpressions: 1cyl 168PSI, 2cyl 162PSI, 3cyl 160PSI, 4cyl 162PSI. So then engine seems good. I can't test the power of it because the clutch is to far gone . It doesn't blow blue out the back too . Unlike the 83 wreck, which blows a lot of blue . Anyway, I was testing the 4WD and found that I could only get 2WD and 4WD, no low range. I pulled apart the center console and found someone had striped the thred on the lever and welded it together (in what looks like the wrong place) . So, I am wondering, did they make a single range 4sp box for the EA81. Also, are these commpresions good? The 83 is running like this: 1cyl 90PSI, 2cyl 70PSI, 3cyl 70PSI, 4cyl 70PSI, so its not so good. Thanks for any imput fellow subie drivers.
  6. How about you install a NOS kit then put the NOS sticker on. That way when the ricers want to drag you you can show them the blue flames out ya pipe as you disappear of the line in 4WD? Gotta love those "ricer" sleeper cars. I'm not one for stickers, but I have seen some cool looking cars that are coated in stickers (you just have to do it right.) And race cars look cool right? At least you have stickers to show what sort of person you are (I guess ricers do the same :-\) so other like you cheer! When I saw the first pic [TOOL] I thought it was ment the rude way :-\ Then I saw the other pics... few...
  7. Driving softly is a big ask for me :-/ Does anyone here know about the problem on EJ25 about head gasket? What engines/years have this problem? Thanks for the info, I am now thinking of the 5speed box in there as well. Only problem there is my tyres are only rated at 120km/h (27" Kuhmo M/T's) so with a setup capable of 200km/h it might be hard to remember, any one know how to add a speed limiter ? LOL
  8. I would but I don't know anyone with a EJ25. Could someone point me to a site wit the dimensions of the EJs? Or if you know, type 'em up here? Thanks snowman, is there any other benefits from the 5 speed other then 5th gear? Also, when fitting the 5speed do I just use the inner cups of the 5speed and the rest of the 4speed shafts/outterCV? Is the propshaft (betweeen t e gearbox and rear diff) the same on both 4/5speed boxes?
  9. I am surrusly thinking of doing a EJ conversion in my 89' Brumby. I have a few questions that i need to think over before going ahead and buying a engine/car for the conversion. Can you fit the standard EJ20, 22, 25 exhaust pipe under the EA81 crossmember? (you use the EA81 crossmember with the EJ right?) Can I use the EA81 flywheel and aftermarket clutch with the EJ, or do I have to use a EA82 set? The EJ25 SOHC is the only EJ SOHC that doesn't fit straight in a MY brumby/brat right? What needs changing to use the EJ gearbox? Thanks a lot!
  10. Also remember that you can adjust where the disty rotor sits if you take it out of the engine and put it back in. Best thing to do is take the cap off the disty rotor and also off the flywheel timming cover. then turn the engine to TDC using the timming marks ( making it point at 0 ) then look at where the rotor is pointing, and that will be number one piston. From there you plug number three in to the next plug on the cap anticlockwise, then 2 then 4. But the way the other guy explained it will work on a stock setting. Oh, by the way, what I said just then is for a EA81, which I think is the same as a EA65/71/82. But I'm not too sure. Hope that helps anyhow. Oh, and next time you can try posting this in the historic forum (the one above Old Gen.) Cheers, Phiz
  11. I tried a product like JB weld, it didn't hold (maybe cos us aussies get cheap crap stuff) I don't have a Y-pipe adapter, I have custom 2" piping bolted straight to the engine... helicoils would of cost me $60 to $80 to fix my engine, so I went for the $30 fix (inserts) and I'm paying for it now. Lesson learnt... I have a 13mm hole, just a bit bigger the half an inch. If i were to use new inserts/heilcoils I would have to drill it out to 14 or 15mm cos of the striped thred in there. I don't know if you can get inserts/heilcoils that go into a 15mm hole and take a 8mm bolt/stud...
  12. Oh kay..... You learn something every day huh? (yesterday I learnt to buy cars with under 150k on the meter...) I tried the 4WD and it works fine. Also the diff is a 3.7 so the diff and gearbox are the same as my brat. How every, I was thinking what the old diff and gearbox might be now.. the Diff is missing the sticker, so how to I tell what ratio the old diff and gearbox is? Thanks for your help so far!
  13. I'll take it from the top (this morning.) I got my head back today. I took it to get its exhust stud welded as it had striped. Well it striped a while back so I decided to put these inserts into all four stud holes, what they do is make it a 13mm hole with a steel threded rod with a thred in the middle of that to put your stud in. So, after doing this I done up the exuhst, all was fine till one of them striped out somehow (probably my fault somehow) So I took the head to get welded, also on the one that striped I had gone right thru to the oil passage so I was leaking oil out the exhuast stud badly. Anyway, back to this morning. I put the head back on. Done the tappets again. Got the engine ready to go in. Put the engine in. As I was jacking up the gearbox and pulling up the engine to make it easy to join together some how I pulled the inner left CV join apart and that made the gearbox sit about 5cm to the right of the car. So I couldn't get the engine mounts bolted up. Took the wheel off, pulled the ball joint out (for like the fith time in 8 months of owning this ute,) pulled the drive shaft out, and fixed the inner CV. Put it all back in and got the wheel back on. I have pluged in everything on the engine all ready to go but the exhuast. So I go to bolt that on (after doing a lot of fiddling to make the stud/bolt things work right (don't ask!) As I'm doing up the first one on the head I got welded the bloody other insert stripes... :banghead: After a lot of that, and smashing my fist onto my engine and other parts under the hood. Oh and not to mention the foot slamming into the wheel sevral times! (I'm not a very angery person normally.) So. Now theres two options. Option number one, get a new engine. Option number two, take this one out, get both heads welded, and put it back in. Problem is I really had to have this car running before tomorrow. My brother had his gearbox brake (2nd, 4th, 5th gears dont work and oil flows out of the clutch area.) And to make it even better mum and dad are on hoilday so the only car my bro and I have is grandmas (POS!)... And my bro works tomorrow and I need a car to do take the scrap vegies the super market creates. If I dont take it at least every two days it get rather big and smelly, and the boss's dont like that :-/ Ahh, back to my car, not my life. WHAT IS A GUY TO DO??? I know a guy with a wreak EA81 wagon that has a really nice gearbox I want and a smooth running engine (not sure if it burns oil though) The problem is, theres this other guy who is going to buy it if he can rego it (its a rusted write off, but if its under a year out of rego he can rego it)... I wish I could just go get the car now, but I have to wait to see what this other guy is going to do! :banghead: (I hate waiting!) So right now I'm on the edge. I really think I should be extra careful so I don't damage anythingf else, like this DAMN POS KEYBOARED!!! ARGHHHHH:banghead::banghead: I think what I am asking is, what would you do? Don't ask me, because I feel like burning the car right now....... (damn thats a long post)
  14. So you guys didn't get D/R EJ's in the US? How sad I want one with a ej22 for my brat But it may have to wait. On topic now, it would be a lot cheaper to use a EA D/R... But I bet EJ gearboxes are so much nicer to use...
  15. on the rare subject: I haven't seen a RX in person, I haven't seen a turbo brat in person, what I have seen is two XT's, one 70's Brat and loads of loyals and leones. Althought I do live in the country, and I do live in Australia! So that might explain it. I'd have to say from being on the forum turbo Brats are the rarest subie except for some pre 80s subies.
  16. And those dont rub? Looks sweet. I want to get a brat like that can WRX street mod it!
  17. I'd read all the posts here but I couldn't be bothered. So I'm just going to say my 89 brumby has them on the drain tray, not the hood. If I find a turbo hood I might get it, but I'd be more interested in whats under the hood EDIT: My bothers old Telstar (mazda 626) had sprayers on the hood, but they were double sprayers. So four sets of squirts. Maybe another upgrade? 6 sprayers would chew thru the juice tho!
  18. I have mine mounted on the roof where the (not working) light used to be. I figured since the arial came out the roof right there I may as well put my CB next to it. The other reason I put it there is because the CB I have is huge! like 8" x 10" x 2"... If I want to see the CB I can just use my rear view mirror flick thingy and the i got a perfect vire of the CB (with all the controls and displays backward!) And no, sorry no pics as yet. Maybe when I get it working I'll post some pics of it!
  19. if you want to get surius with checking the battery, get a SG messurer. There long glass tubes with a float inside. What you do is leave the car off, take one of the caps off the battery, use the SG thingamabob to suck some of the acid out and if it reads higher then 1200 then your usaly ok, but make sure you test all 6 cells...
  20. I tried it in 4WD mode (low and high) seems fine, but I don't know if the rear wheels are getting power as I am only doing this in my driveway (no rego on the car.) But the gearbox in it pops out of gear when its under any strain other then just slowly backing out of the driveway... So I guess it has the same gearbox as my brat/brumby, and uses a 3.7ratio diff. Still the question remains, did they make a 3.9ratio 4 speed gearbox? And if so what did it go in?
  21. ummm. My brat/brumby has a 3.7:1, and it, and the gearbox, are original to the ute. I thought most EA81's were 3.7's. Anyone who can clarify that? edit: BTW, the DL wagon has a 3.7 diff in it at the moment. But the original one it had in it has no sticker, so I'm not sure what it is. I turned it and it seens like a 3.7 but its hard to tell the difference from 3.9 to 3.7. and its been sitting in the sun and is very hot to touch. so, hard to tell...
  22. I bought a DL wagon running wreck the other day. The guy said it had a replacement gearbox that was different to the diff and there for 4x4 will damage the gearbox. Its still a 4speed box though. So my question is, did they make a 3.9ratio gearbox? If so, how do I find out. The car came with the old box and diff so theres plenty of parts for my brat. Also i'm waiting to find out if I can pick up another wreck from him (another DL wagon, writeoff cos the rust in the pillars) But that one has the be t feeling gearbox I have ever felt in a subie, and I want it in my brat!
  23. Hey SubaruFrog. Just thought I'd post because I like your name! In computer games I call myself Silent Frog, and... well... Just thought I'd post to say what a great name! I'm gonna have to check out my dad's EA82 wagon and see for myself where the heater core is, I thought it was just like the EA81's (in the centre.) I don't think I could go through winter without a heater. But i guess if you had to pay someone to do the job it may be cheaper to burn the money for heat!
  24. Yeah... the engine in there has had work done on it, the guy who had it last got twin carbs, and also he said he got bigger valves and a worked cam (I think thats all BS though...) I am going to messure the the valves and if there the same as a normal EA81, I would say every thing else is, but the carbs. So anyhow. I think I will just get the EA81 working good again and then spend some money on a motorbike I have to get it running for some fun (was just watching my old vidoes of on the bike and i now remember how fun it was. So I want to do it again of cause! And the car can just stay as a pig to drive... One day I will fit a EJ in a offroad subie... one day! New project, to fit a 250cc four stroke into a Suzuki DS80 (80cc) chassie! Muhahaha
  25. Heres some pics. Engines out, heads off getting welded (the proper way to fix it!) And this is what the rods and lifters looks like (with out the block opened up, not going that far) Thats what you can see of the lifter when you look inside the block from where the head fits. All four of the pushrods have this type of end on both ends. All four of the rods! Can you tell me if I have soild lifters now? Thanks for all the help and time Ross!
