  1. Don't you hate it when you get an answer like "no, you can't. Its not a good idea. You'll brake something..." Why don't they just say something like "well, your ABS might not work... Not a good thing" , Just say why... PLEASE
  2. Wicked idea... So when one wheel is up in the air you can just lock it up and drive onthe one on the ground? Sounds very useful... I was thinking of putting my "e-brake" (i call it a handbrake) on the rear, lots more fun then! As its hard to get my subie in a nice big controlled slide... Anyway, looks great! EDIT: LOL, love the dice!
  3. I know I have a Leone instrument panel, as I have the tacho. I would say its a dirct fit, by the looks of it anyway. BTW, I have a 89 Brumby... The tacho is run via electronics, and by what I've seen of Ford Telstars and Mazda 626's they normally include all the wiring just for the hell of it. It should fit fine, but don't just take my word on that
  4. well i found out about it on this forum. the guy said he doesn't know how to do it, but he said he takes it to a guy with a machine and he does it... I think it has something to do with changing the advance and making the spark quicker or soming. I would think you could also do this with a computer controlled CDI... but I really have no clue what so ever.
  5. these little guys (ea81s) are as tough as wallnuts.. (what ever that means) I get most hp after about 3200rpm, but my brat pulls a little harder then most... I've heard of a mod called distributer re curving, you can put the maximum power just about anywhere you want it with the mod i've heard... sounds very interesting...
  6. I want jump seats for my Brat... I think there a great idea.
  7. yeah, don't wantto change only 2 of the tyres for bigger. If you do the center diff will have to work extra hard because the front is moving faster/slower (depends on what tyres you changed) then the rear. The reason the subaru guys are saying this is because they don't want you to do damage to your subaru. I can see if you go HUGE your engine might have trouble with pulling along your car from first gear, and thus quicker clutch wear as you have to work it more. I can't see how it would make a lot of differnce. Every one seems to do it, and I haven't heard of any problems yet. Make 'em big. And get the hammer out to make them fit with out rubbing...
  8. LOL... God some weird stuff happens, especialy to joggers  nah, shouldn't pick joggers out, happens to every one.
  9. yeah.. I've had to drill out 3 bolts + all 4 of my exhuast bolts so far on my subie, and I've only owned it like 3 months.... Very handy indeed
  10. looks like you've got some more work to do, and you better buy ur mom a new radiator, lol. Good work so far, I like it with itsa hood off, looks wicked, you'll cause crashes because people will be saying "WTF is the engine? Theres a wheel under the hood!!!" and then bang! Lol, fun when people look at my brat and think theres no engine till they get closer. Good luck with the rest of it mate.
  11. Maybe because theres a big FAQ post about it? Or maybe its just the usual computer stuff up.
  12. I don't know how you figure it to be bad. I looked it up in google, only bad thing i read about it is if the gap is too big and the spark doesn't make it across. If you are running stock every thing, then yes keep the plugs gap at what the manual says. I bought myself a Mallory Promaster coil. I also got some bigger leads. I now run my plugs around 1.1 to 1.3, forgot exactly what it is now. bigger spark from coil can be used to your advantage. More spark = more efficient burn, and also more power as it burns the fuel better and quick.. Anyway, just my 2cents.
  13. How do I know if my Thermostat isn't working. I have a problem whitch is if I am driving at night the heater doesn't work very well.. It works better if I only use 3rd gear :-/ Is this the Thermostat? Thanks
  14. oh, and what about injection? Might not cost as much as twin webers, and might also be better. Alot easy to add a turbo as well!
  15. I have 2" exhuast all the way. It sounds sweet. I do get a bit of that "popping" but its not very loud and its kinda rally car like I run a Mallory Promaster coil now. Got it off ebay for $30. I didn't notice any diff until after I opened up the gap on my "VERY OLD" denso plugs. I also got some Eagle 9mm leads, done just that extra 3hp me thinks, would prolly be much better with new plugs. I was thinking of doing a 2 pipe mod with my ute. Where the two 2" pipes connect together, just cut them off then run two pipes (with out the cat) to the back of the car, or maybe to just infront of the rear wheels. The EA71 pistons sound like a nice idea. I thought because the EA81's are bigger that means longer stroke tho. Surly the pistons would have to be longer to make that up, or is there sometihng to do with the wrist point? Basicly I'd say just buy a "good looking" "good brand" coil, and you can also pick up some 11mm Eagle leads, know they would look SWEET. EDIT: Man... you stay up late huh? Working on the car?
  16. lol.. yeah pictures are gooooood. So there is a few things weird with the 82 models. I saw that there is a clutch kit for 79-81 and one for 82 and one for 83-87, I own a 89 Brumby, So I'm having trouble getting the right one, or maybe I have the right one. Anywho. Got a u-pull it close to you? That's where I like to go. Find all sorts of parts. The intirior should be the same in EA81 brats. But I'm not sure. Good luck with it, and put that EJ in, that would ROCK!!!
  17. There isn't much point removing the post. Better yet how about tell the world what the problem was. Then when people have the same problem they will use the search and find this post. Don't worry about feeling stupid mate, we all are. Sound like a good idea??
  18. What, and pay $1000??? No seriously, I know a guy who was quoted $215AUD for a indicator switch.... I am not sure if this is the right clutch or not. Can some one look at the pictures and tell me. The old one in the pictures is identical to the new one I have for it now.
  19. bump.. I need to know what to do. Should I put this "wrong" clutch in and see what happens. Or should I get a different one? Give me a picture of the right clutch please!
  20. I did adjust the cable when I put the new thrust bearing in about 2 months ago. I haven't put the new clutch in yet as I wont be able ot swap it with the "right" one, if there is such a thing, if it is used. Yeah, the thrust "throwout" bearing did seem like it has been riding the clutch all the time. It was hard as the clutch seemed like it was slipping with high loads (500kg) yet it I couldn't adjust it to not slip as it wouldn't clear and would grind gears. Before the clutch "blow up!" broke it would make a weird noise every so offen, when I put my foot on the clutch it would make a loud ticking noise. sounded like some thing was broken and out of place. But it still worked. Then it broken, no drive what so ever. I'm not sure if the old clutch was put in right. I just assumed it had been done right, as there should onlt be one way it can fit. But as I've learnt with my CV joints there is more then one way to do anything with a subaru, normal one right and one wrong...
  21. Ok... I'l start from the top. When I got my Brumby, the guy said he replaced the clutch. He also said he had to use the old thrust bearing because the one that came with the kit was a different one that didn't fit. I replaced the thrust bearing. First one I got from the shop was a bigger one, that had the bearing inside a casing. The guy at the auto shop said it might be the wrong one, if so just bring it back. So it was the wrong one and it wouldn't fit to the clutch leaver. I went back and got the "right" one, smaller and just a bearing that I pressed onto the cast iron/alloy block that sildes along the shaft to push the clutch plate (friction plate?) It all went back together and worked for about a month. Then the thrust bearing started to make noise. Then finally the other day the clutch just died. When I would go to let out the clutch after putting it in gear (or just having it in nutral) it would make a horrible ticking, snaping, grinding noise. So out came the engine again... I asked on the USMB forum about this http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=36239 So. I figured out I needed a 225mm clutch. My local shop said there is only two, and they have them both in stock. My brother went to get one yesterday. He said the guy at the shop had to get a different thrust bearing for the kit as it had a different one in it that wouldn't fit my "cast iron/alloy casing thingy". I looked at the one he brought back. It is identical to the one I have already, only not worn. It fits all ok, but will it o the same thing mine has? The old one has fairly badly worn "fingers" and they are also worn un evenly. So... I have the only 225mm clutch that will fit the EA81. I have a replacement that is identical. I have been told it is the wrong clutch. I have been told it is the only clutch. And I'm just totally confused and want to just do the EJ conversion ASAP now... Not enough money right now. Heres what I've been thinking. Could I have the wrong thrust bearing "cast iron holder thingy" and be also running the wrong bearing? My dad also said maybe I have the wrong gearbox in the car. But I am sure its for that car as it is the 4spd D/R 4WD box. It also has 21 spline shaft to fit the older clutch's. Any help?? I really am getting very confused. Maybe I have a different problem. One that is damaging the clutch but has nothing to do with the clutch. WHAT CLUTCH DO I NEED??? Photo's anyone? this is just getting too much! Oh, and This is for a 1989 Subaru Brumby EA81. http://webmaster.beverleypaine.com/subaru/clutch_problem1.jpg http://webmaster.beverleypaine.com/subaru/clutch_problem2.jpg http://webmaster.beverleypaine.com/subaru/clutch_problem3.jpg http://webmaster.beverleypaine.com/subaru/clutch_problem4.jpg There is some pictures of the clutch that I pulled out of the car. The one that was making noise and also not moving the car, if you get my gist.
  22. hmm. I think I like the hard tops better... It looked alright with the soft top up tho
  23. Ok. I think I'll leave it as is. I'll just make sure its right, cos of my clutch problem. Anyway, hopefuly getting a new (right) clutch tonight when my bro gets home. Thanks for your help, I wonder if making it heavier would have a benfit, I guess they (subaru) take a while making these cars, I'll leave it as is. Thanks again
  24. Lol.. Probably no where near what you are looking for... But check my page out. Theres a Subaru convertible there! Theres a link to the page with my Subaru at the bottom of that page as well. Any one got any pictures of a real Convertible?
  25. I was thinking that as well. Hadn't thought of the heat disappation tho.
