speedometer accuracy w/larger tires.
Phizinza replied to jonas's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I used my GPS to figure out what speed was RPM on my tacho in top gear. As I usually always cruised in 5th even in town. The tacho never lied I found. MY speedo was bouncy and all over the place anyhow. Changed everyday. -
Mystery noise: any takers?
Phizinza replied to CzarMohab's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Yep, would be the fuel pump. It sits in the back on the drivers side. Might still work but sounds like its on its way out. The relay is setup to give it a squirt of fuel before it starts and then while then engine is running it pumps as well. Its just setup that way so when you turn the key on but don't start the car it doesn't build up too much pressure. Is it SPFI or Carb? -
I think pre 83 or 82 it was 165/75R13's and after that it was 175/70R13's. Both are very close to the same OD and make the speedo work correctly.

EA81 choke sender thread size??
Phizinza replied to Phizinza's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Its a heat switch in the intake manifold. They aren't electric here, well not until much later in 85 or somewhere after that. EDIT: Oh, and just incase your wondering it has a heat switch so when the car is warm it pulls the choke off. Anyhow, its thread was the same as the temp sensor/sender which is 16M?x1.5. I used an old temp sender and drilled out the middle then cut a 1/8npt in it. New temp sensor is now in there with the new gauge just to make sure I don't blow up my dual carb motor with the grill all blocked up. (going racing and need no stop mud and water.) Thanks anyhow. -
I need to know what the thread size is on the EA81 choke sender? Is it 1/2NPT or a Metric one that is close to the same size?
-
Another idea is to put SPFI on, i should give somewhat similar to the Weber 32/36. I've heard the 32/36 single has more low end and less top end then the dual carbs. Whne you want help with things like vac lines drop me a PM, email or come over to my forum at offroadingsubarus.com. I'm sure I can give any info needed.

Oil in the airbox can be caused by a blocked air filter too.. That was the problem the only times I've seen oil up there

The carbs are pretty simple if you have all the parts of cause. They are also pretty similar to standard pre 82 EA81 carbs (at least in Australia they are). Pitty I've already done mine so I couldn't do a photo doc'o of them for you. Do you want to keep the standard manifold, or go custom one on each head type of thing (that's what my plans were, and still are eventually). A small Weber off a 1300cc to 1500cc motor x2 would be a good choice. I'm thinking something like what my brother had on his Fiat X1/9 1300. I think you can get adapters for the older smaller sized EA81 manifolds to Webers. I don't know when it happened but here in Australia at least the EA81's went to the same carb bolt pattern as the EA82's have. I thought it was in 83, but I've seen the smaller size on an 84 so maybe it was later like 85?

Most of the sand dunes you can drive on here are classed "public roads" so you need DOT approved tyres And yes, the cops do come out into the dunes to defect cars and stop nonsense here. The Kumho 27" M/T's did a great job at 14psi in the sand anyhow. Just gotta keep the load light as we've learned. An extra 100-200kg in the back and its shocking in the soft sand
-
The standard carbs are 20/27 throats. And personally I think they only work well above 4000rpm, lower and you don't need much throttle to get maximum power. So I would aim with some carbs with similar throats. I've just got done with cleaning mine and replacing what was needed. I've decided they are pretty nice carbs with few draw backs so I'm just going to stick with them for now.

I live 800km away from where it snows enough to stay on the ground Where I live it has never snowed. About the coldest it gets is 3 or 4 degrees C. This winters minimum was about 7 Celsius. We have lots of sand and dust. And if your lucky, mud. Cheers,

Thought so. It just with the US$ like it is its almost the same price buying a set of 27x9.5 and shipping them over here as it is buying a Kumho 27x8.5. Normally Interco tires are $300 to $400 ea compared to the Kumho at $200ea. But if they won't last long, no point in all the hard work getting them Still good for a small offroad only vehicle. Cheers for that

Scott, awesome work btw, how's those tires for wear. Like how far onroad do you think they'll go?
-
That looks like it was heaps of fun. The only thing we've got like that terrain for a good 400km is a 1km long dry weather only track. You make sure you enjoy what you've got there enough for me as well!

What about places like Rubicon or Moab? Theres nothing like that here for public use.. We do have a lot of sand.. The world is the world all over. We've got some stuff, you've got some stuff.. The amazing thing about it all is it looks the same the world all over too... -
At 4:22, just skip ahead to it. Anyone know who this was? It gets some good cheers.

Your sure the stub is in the knuckle as far as it should be? Can you do the nut up with the hub in to where it should be? Not 100% sure, but I think all the diffs for EA82 boxes are the same, manual or auto.
-
Ok, didn't realise they are cheap over there. I just know you pay through the noes for a Jeep in Aus.

Weird thing is there really isn't anything special down here. As we are restricted by law. I've seen so many pics of rigs in the US with ATV tires, 10" lifts w/tcase mods and general crazy things like that. I've got a mate who moved to the US about 6 years ago and when I save enough to visit him I'll be sure to make it at WCSS time of year. At the moment, I don't even have a Subaru but I do drive my dad's most days. -
EA81-EA82 Driveshaft length differences?
Phizinza replied to Numbchux's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I've heard its like 170mm or something, but can't say for sure.. I really should measure these sometime because this question comes up many times. -
Could it be Jeeps are more expensive so they attract a more "up market" buyer? And those people are never accepting of how a cheaper rig can be so much better offroad.

Yeah, theres two or three vids with it on youtube. A mate by the name of Lesscroft posted a video of it climbing a pretty hard mud hole. But my lastest video on youtube has that footage and the footage of my Brumby doing the same without a welded diff. -

And heres my mates olf Touring. It had 14"s with Goodyear TG M/T's, 2" lift, and we did make a custom snorkle for it using 2" steel tube cut and welded. Yes, it has 3 roof racks, infact before he sold it it had 4.... lol. -

My dad's wagon. With 13" Sunnies (not factory ones). Pretty much standard other wise, except the alloy bullbar.
