The Toyota Hilux (what the pickup is called in Australia) has almost the same track (width) as the EA82's.

Its not how your Subaru is built, its how you drive it that makes it a surious offroader or not. Its just hard to find a decent offroad tread in something smaller then 27". With no lift you can fit 27" OD tires, it just requires some trimming and hammering. I wouldn't go over that size though, because you'll loose what gearing you have.

Not the wheels that are the problem, its what tyre you pick.Read some of the other posts about the same question on here http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=24980 http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=90064&highlight=%2Ano%2A+lift+tires http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=84862&highlight=%2Ano%2A+lift+tires http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=86308&highlight=%2Ano%2A+lift+tires http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=82579&highlight=%2Ano%2A+lift+wheels http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=62289&highlight=%2Ano%2A+lift+wheels http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=73437&highlight=%2Ano%2A+lift+wheels http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=61553&highlight=%2Ano%2A+lift+wheels

fulltime 4wd and 4wd are very different systems

Only one I liked was that pre 00 model, but thats because from the bug eye model on I don't like the look of them. When did the US first get WRX's? I think it was in 92 or 93 here in Aus.

EA82 just uses a modified casting of the EA81 so it can use overhead cams. EA81 has the same issues as the EA82 with exceptions to the over heating (I believe there is a fault in the EA82 blocks that cause overheating) and timing belt failure. The Ea81 does have a few less horses due to smaller valves and carburetor. In my experience I have found the EA81 to be a much more reliable engine.

I was going to read through them all to make sure you deserved it. But screw that, way too much to read. Instead I just clicked for you.

Would you pay $100 for these?

Pretty sure his ";)" means his being sarcastic. Obviously he wants them bad. Do the oppsite of what he says :-p Nice find, should look really good on the subie. -
Didn't notice much difference at all when I took mine off my Brat. Although the rubbers were shot on it anyhow. Made a hell of a difference when my brother put one on his toyota 4runner though. I think the way they are setup on Ea81's takes away a lot of the good of what an antisway bar does. Take it off and drive accordingly I say

I'd be a bit nervous of retro fitted ABS. My brothers old Mazda (89 model I think) had it but it failed a locked up just one wheel with no pressure to the others almost crashed it into a tree. Ended up unplugging it and bleeding all the brakes. No problems after that.

Just get a 5sp EJ box with a custom crossmember and a longer tailshaft. Better AWD system anywho. Oh, I guess you've got the problem of having to have a EJ engine as well then... Oh well, things you have to live with.
-
I just know that the synchros on the low range in the EJ D/R box are smaller so I wasn't sure about the gear synchros.
-
Cheers mate. I really need to work on all those EJ pages a bit more. In the next couple of weeks its getting a big work over.
-
Its a good feeling hey
-
Look bigger then my Kumho 27x8.5R14's... But they only measure 26.3" OD. I'd say they are 27's. I think the BFG AT's are closer to their rated size. Oh and wheels are Desert Rats, made by Speedy.
-
Because of the design of the front pinion shaft the gears have to stay with the centre diff... You might however be able to replace all the synchros with ones from any old 5sp EA82 box...? Not sure on that though.
-
If you don't drive like a nut onroad get the Leg, put in a 4" lift and some mud terrains. Then add EA82 PT D/R box. Maybe even weld the diff? I reckon you'd have plenty fun it in.
-
I'd have to agree. I see so many bars that leave the most important thing to protect unprotected.
-
Looks good. Anything for something else then 13" steelies. I done it for my Brat

Yeah, after being in a Subaru I freak out a bit in toyotas. When he got the 4runner it had 2" lift springs. It was a hard ride so he made 3" longer rear shackles and took two leafs out of the rear. Now the rear sits slightly higher. It still sits a little higher then most other 4runners around but we think its pretty much stock height now. Gonna have to get some videos of this truck, but for now everyone will just have to trust me its a monster. Haven't seen a truck that beats it in mud or rocks yet. In person that is, obviously there are some crazy trucks out there but around here its pretty tame. Lockers FTW. Thats the major thing this yota makes clear.

push button locking center diff????
Phizinza replied to nova72sc's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
The weaknesses of the Subaru drive train have been talked about a lot here. The possibilities of upgrading parts too have been talked about. In the rear your problem is the R160 diff, its small and breaks stubs. Then you've got the axles which can snap even before the stubs. And the joints open up and aventually break. You also have the problem of the transfer gears in the gearbox stripping. And unless you can find a gearbox from another brand that will work (does not exist if you want 4wd) your stuck with them. Turbone is pretty much on track, drive it hard and live with fixing it -
Rubs on the front springs at full lock (which his limited a bit as well). No other rubbing to worry about other then that. He beat the wheel wells in a LOT. In the front behind the tyres it went in about 2.5". We ended up using what us Australians call a crow bar (5ft long inch thick bar with a point at one end a a big flat bit at the other (haven't see anything like it in the US so I thought I'd explain). Its already way illegal, but he still isn't going to lift it anymore because it doesn't need it. Also he isn't too happy on angles so he likes to keep the CG low. Once he gets the custom transfer case mount done it will have a tonne of clearence we reckon. Then the rock sliders are on the way.

Maybe if you gave a kind "please search to find what your after" and maybe include a quick link to the search page. Or you could possibly say "No". Or even just not answer. -
What the heck is this thing?
Phizinza replied to ettev's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Mine didn't have that there. But I'm in Australia and mine was an 89. -
