wanting to do something different to my Brumby
Phizinza replied to kiwi subbie's topic in Subaru Retrofitting
I'm not sure if the EZ will fit between the EA81 or if it was the EA82 chassis rails. I know it fits between the EA82 (or I've been told that). I also know the EG33 won't fit in the EA81 without chassis mods. Theres been a few posts on here. But I've been around for three years and read a lot. Got no idea what post the right infos in. Sorry. -

I think you'll find yourself wrong there. The EZ30 is a completely different motor to an EJ (unlike the EG's relation to the EJ) and even though it is DOHC it is "thinner" then the DOHC EJ's. No matter what gearbox you run, offroading with a massive torque curve a turbo engine like that gives would be a PITA. But if its just road driving it doesn't matter so much. The torque my EJ22 had over a mates EJ20 NA was very noticeable even on road and the EJ22 was a much nicer engine to get off the line on. -
This was on two weeks ago. I was going to enter the event but I didn't get the car done in time so I just watched and filmed it. Was a great weekend and I'm looking forward to entering next one (Oct). How it ended the weekend.

Maybe because the EZ30 is suppose to fit in the chassis rails of the EA81 car unlike the DOHC EJ's and EG's? Plus an STi has a whooping great big turbo which only brings power at high RPM. Where as a 3L flat 6 will give very nice low end torque. Power is useless unless its in the right place for the right purpose. Oh, but I bet it's because of mainly what the title to this post says "wanting to do something different to my Brumby" -
Thanks Numbchux, didn't know that. Would of been nice to know it when I still had my Brumby.

To fix the radiator fan problem do what I done. http://offroadingsubarus.com/images/ej22swap_mazda_airconfan_stock.jpg http://offroadingsubarus.com/images/ej22swap_mazda_airconfan_fitted.jpg 86 Mazda 626 air con fan x2... As far as I know with no lift you can't fit the 5sp in without tunnel work. So I'd say you'd need extencive trans tunnel mods -
My box I built up for my old Brumby used EA82 FT4wd 3.7 and centre locking diff. Liberty gears. EA82 PT low range. And EJ D/R casing to bolt it to my EJ22. All that and it only cost me $450 and some time of cause Have fun with your box.

Bloody aussies and all their money... lol :-p I just see no point in saying something is possible when if you take money out of it its all possible. Your just giving people fantasies about things they can't afford and by the time they can they won't bother with a Subaru. Enjoy your RX

New Subaru Commercial With Brat
Phizinza replied to Durania's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
checked out all the "subaru commercial" videos posted to youtube in the last week and I see some really, really weird/bad/wrong/omg adverts but nothing that you describe. -
wheres the offroad modification sticky gone?

So if someone posts an obvious/answered question maybe everyone will let off a bit on them and be nice? -
If you had read what I wrote you would of understood I meant that the pinion is not change able. For your average joe that is. I would of thought most people here know that most people here aren't into expensive custom mods like welding pinions and shafts together. I know that you can use the gears from all those boxes, but you can't just bolt in a different ratio to a FT4WD gearbox. I know you know what your talking about. But making a statement that reads like this can be (and has been in the past) misleading to many readers. This makes it sounds like you can use an EJ ratio with a FT locking box. Which you can unless you are filled with cash. Which I do realise many Subaru owners in Australia are filled with cash but if you've been on ultimatesubaru long you would know that any talk of expensive custom parts is just talk.

Any lift? Or standard height? If you lift the suspensionon an EA81/82 both the rear and front will go positive camber and nither are adjustable. Positive camber will cause more wear on the outside of the tire. If that is the case being the rear on an old swing arm design Subaru you can't do anything about it. They are solid, no adjustment.
-
Just to confirm, you cannot use EJ pinion with EA FT4WD center diff. So you cannot use a EJ ratio with an FT4WD box. You can however put EJ ratios in an EA box by using the EJ's rear casing and center diff.

Interesting that this has come to the top as I was just thinking about using tractor tires (not the grippy ones, but the 2wd steering type) on a project offroad race zook. So I'm going to be looking into tractor tires again.

pamike, makin it look too easy mate. All mud is good mud.

Now thats some serious camber....

The positive is relayed.. The negative still goes through the stalk on the steering column I wired the positive through some fuses to the battery direct. Then stuck relays on the negatives so there was as little wiring needed as possible. I have a diagram somewhere on my site. Then I got non-sealed beam lights, stuck Narva 50+ Xenon gas enhanced halogens (50/60watt) in the outer lights and 100watt H1's in the inner high beam only. Got the lenses from a Nissan van. I've never been in a car with brighter lights including a mates 88wagon with two 170 lightforce's.

Continuing on from my Rock Hoppers and Mudding threads.. Lets see the pics of your roo on the dunes.

Nice work... I like the new paint job. Kinda reminds me of something.. I vote clear coat over the top of that! haha
-
I made some things exactly like that. Never got around to fitting them though.
-
Put in relays on the negative side of the lights.. Set it all upright and they are very bright. The lights normally only get about 10.5v with standard wiring.
-
No, I followed that. Problem is, that wouldn't allow onroad driving. Plus keeping the Subaru box and a transfer case gives two low ranges. I don't have any plans at the moment for anohter Subaru. But I would like to try this out one day.

Spoil one of the only good things a Subaru has? Weight.. Three wheels and tires of that size could easily weigh 300lb, a tenth of a loaded Subaru.
