  1. They're just chopped vee dubs aren't they? Nothing like a rock crawler! Still pretty fun. You can't barely touch a vehicle here without breaking the rules, that's why my car is so illegal...
  2. Can't really help you too much because I am using an EJ22 with the EJ gearbox casing and clutch/flywheel.. But, have a look at my posts here. http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=69832 Might be an idea, you could be the first guinea pig to try it.
  3. ahaha.. Love the pictures with those tires on it. Just need to limit the suspensions up travle and your set.. hehe
  4. And the pictures to go with my last post.. http://offroadingsubarus.com/images/ej22swap_5sp_shifter_linkages.jpg http://offroadingsubarus.com/images/ej22swap_5sp_shifters.jpg http://offroadingsubarus.com/images/ej22swap_5sp_shifter_lowrange_positions.jpg I had to remove the boot for the low range lever too and I've long since had a boot for the shifter. Maybe I'll get something for them. Might have to break out the lether, tools and sewing niddle... I'm going to work on the intake later today. It's good not having a full time job ahaha. The y-pipe exhaust looks like it needs some cutting and welding to get it to fit how I want so I'll have to wait til my brothers got another day off, as his 100% better at welding them me. I better start looking for a muffler. I want 2 inch pipe cat back. I want a muffler thats the same as my old one, which looks something like this: _____| |_ |....../ /..| |...../ /...| |..../ /....| |.../ /.....| |../ /......| |./ /.......| -| |------ lol.. I wonder if that makes any sence to you? Basiclly it's a straight through but it goes on an angle. It sounds 10x better then a "cannon" or "hot dog" muffler I reckon. I wonder if I can find one just like it... hmmm
  5. Hmm, well we'll see how it goes, at the moment I am putting more effort into trying to start up the EJ to make sure it works in there. Thanks for all the pictures.
  6. I got the shifter linkages in yesterday, cable operated low range (came stock on the liberty, so I thought I'd grab it and bolt it on the Brumby, I'll have to get pictures of that later. I am amazed that there was a unused bolt right in the right spot to fit the 5sp's shifter! Well, about an inch to far to the right, but it still works great. Thanks for all the replys... I really want this thing rockin soon! I'm going to put all the things it needs to run on and see if I got this wiring loom correct in the next couple of days.. My poor brother, I've been getting him to help me out on all his days off.. ahaha.. He knows I'll help him with his turbo x1/9 project next, so all is good
  7. Auto or manual? Should be 23 if it's a DL...
  8. I've looked for them online but can't find any info.. Are you sure that that is the brand and not just the tires 'name'? They sure do look beefy!
  9. You might try some ATF (auto trans fluid) down the carbie, just a little at a time. This cleans it and also will oil the combustion cambers.. Looks good, time for a lift and tires? ehehe
  10. I don't like bearings that are that exposed, also there is another uni joint to go wrong in the setup. But for now I'll go with a 2 piece and decide what to do when it dies..
  11. Yeah, I would like to just do a 1 piece but I'm on a small budget. So out of workshop custom is out of the question for now. My brother just described pretty much what is in that picture. I'll have to bolt the diff in first so then I can figure out how high I can mount the bearing. I have a 2" lift kit.
  12. I'm ready to fit the rear diff and propshaft back in with my conversion in my Brat/Brumby and I just wanted to see what others have done to mount the prop's center bearing. So if you have any pictures or a good description that would rock. Thanks!
  13. You coud cut your fenders out really big, as in, all the way round. Or is that what you ment. Putting another inch on those caster/radius rods is a good idea. A lift kit isn't gonna do much different to cutting your fenders out. Because the exhaust and prop will still make your car have low clearance (well, not low, but not any better.) If you don't mind cutting them out a fit and maybe fitting some rubber flairing, then I'd say cut... Looks great by the way.
  14. More updates!!! Yesterday we worked more on the camber adjusters. I still need to put washers with cut outs in them in between the rubber and the 'cam' (in the 22mm hole I drilled basicly) so the rubber on the control arms don't die. Heres some pictures. http://offroadingsubarus.com/images/camber_adjuster_kit_cuttingcams.jpg http://offroadingsubarus.com/images/camber_adjuster_kit_cam.jpg http://offroadingsubarus.com/images/camber_adjuster_kit_welding_final.jpg Top one is cutting the discs using a lathe on thread cutting speed and an angle grinder. I would of used a cut off bit in the lathe but the tow ball I used was such hard steel the bit could not take the heat so it was doing more cutting to the bit instead of the ball. The angle grinder worked a treat though! Then it was time to put the motor in. When I got it on the crane I relised I may have forgotten to make sure the holes in the new gearbox crossmember lined up properly. I figured the easiest way to measure was to just continue to put the engine and gearbox in.... It worked! All lined out perfectly!!! Wooo hoo! http://offroadingsubarus.com/images/ej22swap_enginegearbox_crane_ready.jpg http://offroadingsubarus.com/images/ej22swap_enginegearbox_crane_goingin1.jpg http://offroadingsubarus.com/images/ej22swap_enginegearbox_crane_goingin2.jpg http://offroadingsubarus.com/images/ej22swap_enginegearbox_crane_goingin3.jpg http://offroadingsubarus.com/images/ej22swap_enginegearbox_incar_gearboxmounts.jpg You may of noticed it was a little tight getting it in.. I think this is because the mounts we held the engine to the crane with were different to the EA81 and so we could not get as much angle on the setup as before with the engine leveler. My brother had to straighten the radiator mounts out and bent that piece of metal back after putting the engine in.. But other wise it fits beautifully! And some other pictures. First off my heater hose pipes. They were touching my vacuum solenoid and the starter motor. So I moved the whole heater valve backwards in the car and pulled the pipes a bit more into the car. http://offroadingsubarus.com/images/ej22swap_heater_hoses.jpg And heres an interesting one. No one has ever really shown me a picture of said how much room there is for stock cooling fans on the radiator. Heres why you can't use the stock fans in my case. http://offroadingsubarus.com/images/ej22swap_stock_radiator_clearance.jpg I plan to use 2 Air-con fans from Mazda 626's on my EA81 radiator. The EJ radiator looks like it would require cutting part of the chassis out, so I think I'll stick with my EA81 version. And if it isn't good enough in the future I'll get a double core one. Although, mine has never had a problem with over heating my EA81dc exepct the few times the cap failed. It's almost time to get the wiring loom out of the box and place it in the engine bay to see if I can start this puppy.. Well I have some exhaust and cooling to deal with first. Also need to weld that center bearing in for the propshaft and deal with the shifter side of things. Oh and make that vacuum solenoid do it's thing.. The list goes on, and on, and on....
  15. Heres the pictures. http://offroadingsubarus.com/images/ej_to_ea_adapterplate_template1.jpg http://offroadingsubarus.com/images/ej_to_ea_adapterplate_template2.jpg http://offroadingsubarus.com/images/ej_to_ea_adapterplate_cutting.jpg http://offroadingsubarus.com/images/ej_to_ea_adapterplate_cutting_drill.jpg http://offroadingsubarus.com/images/ej_to_ea_adapterplate_cutout.jpg http://offroadingsubarus.com/images/ej_to_ea_adapterplate_threading.jpg
  16. I have to start with... I'm a lamborghini fan. Now.. That is a pretty nice wrx, sounded kinda modified. That's cool, but modified street cars shouldn't be compared to stock cars, at any time. And.. Gallardo's are soft Audi lambo's, no wonder it lost, it's not as super as a supercar should be to start with....
  17. I had to grind an axle nut to have a tapper on it so it would fit in the hubs tapper to pull the axle splines into the hub. It worked really good. I've done plenty of others, including some 1" long bit of metal pipe to press wheel bearings in. And so on.
  18. I'm working on the fuel side of things now. Still trying to figure it all out. On a side note: Don't look at the fuel hoses while removing them. Fuel + eyes = ****, ****, ****... ARRGGGGHHHH ******* *** !!!!!! Do people really think the surge tank is needed in the EA81? Anyone had problems without one? I had an idea of making/getting one that would fit right next to/behind the fuel pump under the left hand side of the car. Then running the original fuel pump and original return lines into it and the new fuel pump and return+vent line into the other side of it. Is this just over kill? I reckon I will just take out all the vent stuff on the tank and plug it up.
  19. Yes, I used mild steel 40mm by 3mm bar to reinforce the crossmember because after cutting and hammering it split a bit. We just found out today that because of the extra thickness we needed to also replace those studs that hold the crossmember on. This required grinding the tops off them and hammering out. This of cause would not work in an EA81 with no lift kit...
  20. The way I done one with 12mm thick alloy plate was.... I got a thick piece of cardboard, cut a bit bit out of the center (kinda where the flywheel was going to go.) Then punched the two lower holes out for it using a EJ22 that was/is sitting in the shed. Placed it over the EJ22 bellhousing, then used a hammer and tapped the cardboard around the outside of the engine bellhousing. Then placed it on the EA trans (I used a 4sp for this, but I don't think it matters.) And don the same, but on the inside of the trans bellhousing. Then cut it out and marked the 4 other holes (2 for engine, 2 for trans) with a pencil. Placed this on the plate of alloy and marked it out. Then cut the alloy out with the jig saw and a drill. Drilled out the other holes and threaded them, and after a little grinding to the gearbox it fitted right up. I have pictures, and I will see if I can post them tomorrow, as it is now bed time here in Aus... EDIT: Not sure if you wanted to know or not, but the bolts are all 12Mx1.25 thread.. Hope that has helped.
  21. Another update for todays happenings... A fair bit happened today, as it was my brothers day off, or one out of three a week anyhow. So anyway, I got him to work obviously pretty much all day (well about 5 hours of the day anyhow.) Do you think I have said "day" enough times so far? :-\ Enough of that, time to show you some pics, as I know all of you like pics! I'll start in order that things happened. As I needed to pull the gearbox crossmember and the plates it attaches to (because one of the studs that holds the crossmember on snapped off,) I decided to replace the steel lift with the alloy one I had planned to do for a while now. Also because the bolts I bought ages ago were a little to long I got the thread cutters out and cut another 15mm of thread on each bolt (12Mx1.25) then got my bro to cut 20mm off of each bolt. Results.... http://offroadingsubarus.com/images/subaru_liftkit_alloyblocks_brumby.jpg http://offroadingsubarus.com/images/subaru_liftkit_alloyblocks_brumby_fitted.jpg Then it was time to move onto the gearbox crossmember. I had already cut the EA82 version down to match the EA81 version a couple of days ago, but it needed reinforcing and some holes drilled. So, out came the angle grinder and 40x2mm bar steel. Then got my bro to weld it up. Results.. http://offroadingsubarus.com/images/gearbox_crossmember_conversion1.jpg http://offroadingsubarus.com/images/gearbox_crossmember_conversion2.jpg http://offroadingsubarus.com/images/gearbox_crossmember_conversion3.jpg http://offroadingsubarus.com/images/gearbox_crossmember_conversion4.jpg http://offroadingsubarus.com/images/gearbox_crossmember_conversion5.jpg Sorry, no pictures of it in as yet as the paint is still drying. So I'll do that tomorrow. Then the last and hardest part of the day. The camber kit... Today we drilled the holes for the lower control arm camber cams. The engine crossmember is VERY tough stuff. With our brand new 22.22mm drill bit ( 7/8ths ) it was still very hard and I reckon the bit needs sharpening now.. Anyway, I wouldn't suggest doing it... It wasn't fun... The first picture is from the other day when I flattened out the crossmember to fit the camber cam which are 40mm by 4mm discs I made with the lathe, angle grinder and a towball. Four cams (discs) are needed in total. Also the cam's need to be drilled with an off center hole, I'll do that later tomorrow. http://offroadingsubarus.com/images/camber_adjuster_kit_flattening_enginecrossmember.jpg http://offroadingsubarus.com/images/camber_adjuster_kit_cam.jpg http://offroadingsubarus.com/images/camber_adjuster_kit_drilling_enginecrossmember.jpg http://offroadingsubarus.com/images/camber_adjuster_kit_drilled_enginecrossmember.jpg Hope you enjoyed this.
  22. The AWD's are pretty good, because they have a VLSD (viscous limited slip differential.) But, yes, not as good as 4WD or center locked AWD.
  23. I think if you look at GM alternators you will find they are pretty easy to fit (I have never done it myself though.) Check this link here, I think you may need to do some wiring swaps http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=24227&highlight=%2AGM%2A+alternator+swap Also I've read about Nissan Maxima alts (they are 90amps or something?) http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=64514&highlight=%2AGM%2A+alternator+swap Which seemed pretty easy. If you have aircon I don't think the conversion is easy at all.
