Brumby conversion: EJ22, hybrid AWD center lock, SUCCESS!!!
Phizinza replied to Phizinza's topic in Subaru Retrofitting
I cleaned the engine bay today. And drilled out the engine mount holes. I would post pictures, but the engine bay is still dirty looking (not as bad as it way, but) and the holes look terrible.. ahhaa, not trying to hard. But they will do the job and you won't be able to see them so that's alright.. My major goal is to make it look like that engine and gearbox was made for the car, eheh. -
I wonder how much it would be to ship the EJ D/R casing (just the front, not the rear diff housing) to the US.. That is all the really need, as long as the gears are all the same size on your legacy's vs EA82 D/R. Because you would need the EA82's input shaft (because it's got the special two piece dual range stuff) and you would need the EJ's output shaft and pinion shaft. Then you could either do what I'm doing, or just put the VLSD back in and make it back to a dual range AWD box. This way it will bolt right up to your EJ (if that's what you are using.) Anyone know the ratios of all the gears in the EA82 and Legacy boxes?
-
Basiclly most just put three blocks on either side and drop that whole plate.
-
Can you show me pictures of this? I am putting my FT4WD box in my Brat and I don't want to use EA81 mounts.. How can you fit the EA82 mounts to the EA81 crossmember. better low range, better shifter linkage, more gears for better driving on roads with corners, etc etc etc..
-
Too long. Put it this way.. You'd have 2 or 4 cylinders sticking out beond your grill! Notice how this 60's(?) design engine looks alot like the DOHC EJ's? Only of cause much sexier... Why does it take so long for us to get cool stuff when the race cars get it right away! sorry, I got my wires crossed along with my eyes...

Pinion is part of the shaft "inside a shaft." As in it is machined, not pressed on What I would do with your RX is build up a non-turbo 5sp with the gearset of the EJ (legacy 5sp?) box and a 4.11 front diff along with a 4.11 pinion shaft onto the EJ's VLSD. Using the dual range front casing ofthe gearbox either fitted to a EJ or an EA82t. And then use a custom gearbox crossmemeber to bolt the gearbox into your EA82 car. To change the ratio of the front diff or to fit any other type of center diff/ 4WD engager gear you need to split the casing and pull the pinion shaft out and replace it with the one that matches the back casing. If you don't care about D/R, you can do this alot easier and just use a EJ with a early EJ gearbox with modded crossmemeber and turbo front DOJ cups. Oh, one other thing. The EJ's center diff casing has an output set about 40mm further backwards then the FT4WD and PT4WD, so you will need to shorten the propshaft... Fun fun..

Well I think I plan to keep this a stock EJ22.. I was thinking of a turbo with low boost, but I'll have some fun with power in another car. Another thing I was thinking.. If you had a LSD in the rear with a open center diff like the locker one is, wouldn't this make the center diff want to put more power to the front as there is less friction there? Thus when you turn and a front wheel lifts a little it would want most power going to that wheel? I guess that's why they use the center LSD these days..

Radius and camber modification...
Phizinza replied to Phizinza's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
The design was first shown to Fiat in 69... Get that... Imagine what it looked like in 76 (or was it 74) when they came out.! -
The EJ VLSD center differential casing has different mounts to the EA82's mounts. So it needs a modded crossmemeber to fit in a EA82 car. The pinion gear is attatched to the pinion shaft.. If you want the diff locker, you must have 3.7, unless you can find a XT6 3.9 FT4WD M/T gearbox.. If you want VLSD center.. Well then you find an EJ gearbox with the right ratio you want and use it's crown wheel(ring gear) and pinion gear and shaft (remembering the gear and shaft are one piece) in the FT 4WD box. I think the PT4WD box has a one piece output shaft.. In other works the shaft the gears are on is the same as the shaft the pinion gear is on. Where as the FT4WD gearbox has a output shaft (the one with the gears on it) and a pinion shaft that goes down the middle of it. Thus letting the front turn inderpendently from the outputshafts gears.. I'm sorry if I confuse you, this was all new to me 6 months ago before I pulled both the EJ and FT4WD boxes apart... I still need to get the PT4WD on the bench and have a look inside So if you want AWD on a PT box I am guessing you need to take the output gear shaft along with the pinion shaft from the EJ into the EA, and hope the EA input shaft hasthe same gear ratio's as the EJ output shaft...

It's scary!! That's what it is..

Click the underlined text, it's links to his site... He talks to lots of people about the X1/9's in the USA, just check out http://www.network54.com/Forum/12159/ -
A D/R 5sp PT4WD (PT = Part Time, in other words engagable 4WD) you get FWD 5 gears plus reverse, obviously. You then can have 4WD 5 gears plus reverse. Then with the 1.59 to 1 ratio low range gear set engaged you get 4WD with 5 gears and reverse at a lower speed. As in 1st gear Lo is like having a 0.5 gear.. And you can use all gears in low range as well as high... Hope that's what you were wondering :-\ With a gen 2 Brat if it is already 4WD I think all you have to do to put the 4sp D/R 4WD trans in is change the 4WD selector lever with the D/R one. If you put the 5sp 4WD D/R in, you will have to fit the 5sp's 4WD selector lever, and gear lever, which I don't know what that needs, but I will be doing it in the next couple of weeks. Plus with the 5sp you need the 5sp's propshaft with requires mounting the center bearing and using the two piece shaft. But other then that the 5sp should bolt to your EA81 and the driveshafts(axles) should slide right on, unless you get a turbo model 5sp... Confusing enough?

The GL-5's I have seen aren't labled it on the outside, only under the hood. They are normally sedans with some luxury extras.

The silver one, or the red one? Red one is my Brumby/Brat The silver one is my brothers Fiat X1/9, or should I say ONE of my brothers X1/9's.... If you thought a AWD Subaru handled good... Think again, these mid engine RWD X1/9's turn so good, pitty they are let down by a 76hp 1300 or a 85hp 1500... But his 1300 is soon to have lots more power -
With a different bearing, you might be able to fit a VLSD into the FT4WD casing, this would mean you don't need to make a custom gearbox crossmember for the new EJ boxes rear end... But if I were doing this and the center locker was still good, I'd keep it with the casing and use the EJ's casing. So, what you could build for a EA82t RX is... 3.9 or 4.11 (maybe 4.44) diff with a 1.59 low gear and VLSD AWD... Just keep in mind you have to keep the same crown wheel on the front diff that was matched with the pinion gear. So if you have a 4.11 pinion, you need the 4.11 crown wheel. But you can run any front 5sp LSD unit you want.
-
So I was doing some thinking. With a EJ22, and a locked rear just say, how tough is my center locker going to be? So, my question is. Has anyone broken a center differential from a FT4WD 5sp, either the locking part, or the differential itself? Just interested to know really.. And yes, I know I can't run a welded rear diff with the AWD engaged. But just say the rear end was locked as well as the center
-
So what car are you going to be 'dragging' with? What has it got under the hood?
-
I know for a fact that you can use the crown wheel, pinion gear (which is all part of the shaft) and the output gear set of the FT4WD box in the PT4WD EA82 box with the rear center diff locker rear end casing. Because that is what the FT4WD box I got was... It had already been swapped around. You cannot put the center locking diff or VLSD in the PT rear end (not 100% sure, about about 99% sure.) I'm also 99% sure you can't put the VLSD in the locker casing or visa versa. I believe the S/R FT4WD XT6 trans came in 3.9... This means you can use it's crown wheel and pinion shaft to get a 1.59 D/R 3.9 FT4WD box.. Again, only guessing, as I haven't seen a XT6 FT4WD trans (well hell, I haven't seen a XT6 in the real as we never got them here. But then again, we never got FT4WD boxes either, the oine I have is a import.) If you use the VLSD (which is much better for road only use anyhow!) you can have 3.9, 4.11, or 4.44 I believe.. Any pre 99 5sp manual uses the same center VLSD I believe, which means their pinion shaft much be the same. I've also seen pictures of inside a 02 WRX 5 sp (I believe that is what it was)and it was almost the same as the PT4WD EA82 box, even had a place for the low range gears over the top of the diff! I'm looking for pictures of my Subaru Liberty/Legacy D/R insides now, but I think they are on my brothers phone....

Radius and camber modification...
Phizinza replied to Phizinza's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Update.... Now that I have pulled the engine and gearbox out of my roo http://offroadingsubarus.com/images/ej22swap_striped_brumby_underneath.jpg I have found that the right hand radius/caster rod was fairly loose on the control arm... Maybe another reason why the car had some ever changing steering pull. That and http://offroadingsubarus.com/images/ea81_suspension_mount_broken.jpg wouldn't help....... -
And we call EA82's L-series.... go figure. I call EA81's, EA81's unless it's a gen 1 EA81, in which case I get confused and get back to surfing youtube :-\ :-pWe also call all sedans, either they be EA81's or EA82's Leone's, how weird huh? So it goes like this... EA71 gen 1 EA81 gen 1 EA71 gen 2 (hatch version, I do believe this was called a STD, or "standard") EA81 gen 2 EA82 gen 3? hang on a sec... What do we call the EA82's? How about... EA82 DL EA82 GL EA82 GL-10 (and some I've seen as GL-5) EA82 turbo wagon EA82 RX (sedan or coupe) I bet I've missed some.. Some times it's just easier to say the year and body type, and be done with it. When you see "MY" just think EA81, that's pretty much what we mean when we say it.
-
I know this doesn't help, but it's good for clearing up some questions people have.... The dual range gearset is in the front of the gearbox before the input side gears (1st, 2nd, 3rd etc.) In this picture you can see the "Lo" gears on the right, and the input side of the main gear set on the left. The diff goes in the hole at the top of the picture. http://offroadingsubarus.com/images/ea82gearbox_centerdifflock_casingsplit_rightside.jpg A "normal" 4WD has what we refer to as a t-case (transfer case) which sits at the back of the gearbox. A transfer case really only relates to a 4WD engager, not a low range gearset. So really our Subaru's are the same because they have a selectible t-case to engage 4WD at the back of the gearbox. So to add D/R (dual range) you basiclly need to replace the gearbox. As for your question, I take it you have a 81 gen 1 styled Brat. Like said before you either need a EA81 from a gen 2 style or EA82 and a D/R gearbox. Or do the bell housing swap. Which is just the back part of the negine that mounts it to the gearbox.

Yeah, I tried it, but the only ones I had big enough had to big of a screw, so it was going to rub on the caliper my brother said. Maybe I'll find some smaller ones that will fit later on. At the moment I am just using zip ties, as the original somehow pulled itself off This time I put some silicone between the rubber and the cup, we'll see how that goes. And some more pictures! Here is the striped out Subaru Liberty GX I got the motor, gearbox casing, and wiring loom from. http://offroadingsubarus.com/images/ej22swap_donor_libertygx1.jpg http://offroadingsubarus.com/images/ej22swap_donor_libertygx2.jpg Here is the striped out Subaru Brumby that's getting the Ej22 and funky swap box that I built. http://offroadingsubarus.com/images/ej22swap_striped_brumby_underneath.jpg And here is an unexpected problem.. I was jacking the car up to remove the plate that bolts the gearbox crossmember to the body (or in my case, the lift blocks.) Mayeb this is what was making that noise I thought was a bull joint that I replaced not so long ago... http://offroadingsubarus.com/images/ea81_suspension_mount_broken.jpg I gotta get some pictures of my custom bracket for hte diff locker lever next. I warn you though, it is very cheap looking...
