New problem... I am trying to figure how to get the vacuum actuator to fit on the gearbox with all the levers and stuff for the diff locker. I got this gearbox without the original levers and things, was told the PT S/R gearbox lever would work which I have but I need some pictures to show me how the original fits on. So I can make up a bracket and stuff to make what I have work. So any pictures of the diff locker lever and that area would be awesome! Cheers,

oil thinga on lo-range gears 5sp, needed?
Phizinza replied to Phizinza's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Sorry, but both my FSM's have nothing about this piece, so I didn't know what to call it... :-\ Thinga, seems to work :-p -
So you prefer water to air? Why is that? I always thought they were kinda cool, but I've seen so many front mount intercooler setups on later subarus it's just not funny.

Low or high, it still is hard to shift.. Shifting the low range gear is easy though.

I am not sure about EA71's but I know EA81's and EA82's are different. You might try asking if the steering wheel spline is different on the 1980 Brat vs the 1979 Brat is different. EA81 Boss kits are VERY hard to come across now. EA82's are getting that way too. So I don't know where you'll find a EA71 Boss kit unless it's the same as ano0ther car. This is best suited to the "History Gen" forum too. -

Liberty is the same as a Legacy. Only from 89 to 93 they also came in D/R... On the inside they are the same as the D/R EA82 boxes, ony the back half is a center LSD, not 2wd 4wd selector. -

Get rid of english.html and you will get a message saying this page has moved and a link to where it lies now. http://monswap.monchar.com to be correct. -
That's what I wanted to hear Cheers,

I think I've heard them referred to as an "upright" and as a "steering nuckle". The hub is the part that has the spline in it for the driveshaft/axle/halfshaft/(thinga.)

Are you talking about aftermarket boss kits to fit aftermarket steering wheels? -

Have you experienced this? -
Can take upto 6 months to boat stuff from Australia to the USA. And then there might be a month for who ever is making the kit to get it made and sent. You might need to wait a little longer. Have you tried emailing or ringing Hi-Rise and finding out if your kit is on the boat or still being made? They were pretty quick with making us front strut tops and getting to us. But we are in Australia.

I am putting the FT4WD box back together and I have found it is incredibly hard to operate the diff lock lever. It takes about 50Nm to engage it while turning the imput shaft. And 40Nm to disengage using the torque wrench. Is this correct? I seem to remember being able to do it by hand with the screw driver when it was together. Will the vacuum actuator be able to operate this? Seems a bit heavy/wrong. EDIT: See my below post

... never knew that, interesting.

G'day. When we done our 2" lifts we took these photos. Hope this helps. http://offroadingsubarus.com/images/subaru_liftkit_diff_hanger.jpg diff hanger re-drill. http://offroadingsubarus.com/images/subaru_liftkit_blocks.jpg on the left are the EA81 blocks, on the right are the EA82 blocks. http://offroadingsubarus.com/images/subaru_liftkit_ea81_frontstrut.jpg EA81 front strut lift blocks. http://offroadingsubarus.com/images/subaru_liftkit_ea82_frontstrut.jpg EA82 front strut lift blocks. http://offroadingsubarus.com/images/subaru_liftkit_steering_extension.jpg EA81 non-P/S steering extension. There is more that is needed, but that is most of it. I did have the bolt sizes somewhere, but I can't find them now. Only build your own if you really want to. If you can afford one, I'd say buy one. It's a fair bit of work doing all the steering and strut lift (front and rear. We bought the fronts from a place then made our own rear.)

First, the mod to it would cut half of it off. And second, I already have the gearbox sealed back up (oops ) I could only find the one from the EA82 gearbox and thought the EJ22 box didn't have one, then I found it and went "oh ____" Kinda changes things.. -
(FYI the EA82 D/R gearbox is almost the same as the EJ22 D/R gearbox) Is this really needed? I couldn't fit it in the Subaru Liberty(EJ22) D/R gearbox with the EA82's Lo-range gearset without modifying it. What does it do? It looks like it collects the oil that has been splashed onto the low range gears off of the ring gear, then sends it all back down behind the ring gear to the sump of the gearbox. So with out it I think it will just flow more oil over the diff, which isn't a problem?

In the video: I vote for smaller tires on that wagon.. I just don't think our little subies can push those size tires without some sort of extra low. Sorry, I have nothing to add to this as my car is softcore.

Yeah, I know.. What I ment was, I want to see hardcore Subaru offroading, and that is what this thread was started for.. I really need to make myself more clear on these things at the beggining.

Nice car. Looks like a lot of fun. Can't wait to see more from this beast. Have you thought about putting in a longnose R180 or an R200? Only problem is driveshafts. Not sure what splines they are on the nissans.

I may say one or two things against some of the people at AUSubaru every couple or months or so. But so what?? I've heard much worse things come from AUSubaru about USMB in much more frequent intervals.. Just take no notice of me, obviously you disagree and obviously I'm not changing my feelings about it. I don't think you know how deserving some people are or not. I know the forum isn't whats wrong, but it's a particular mod and some of the long term, post happy, members what makes it a un-friendly place for people who don't believe or think in the same way. Sorry if you thought I ment USMB when I said this, I didn't. I ment AUSubaru. I will try and make myself more clear in future. But enough of that, if you want to continue this I suggest starting a new topic in the off topic forum and giving me the link.. This is ment for the sharing of hardcore offroading of Subarus.

I can give you credit on that.. But really, there isn't much great with the rest. And just because you were first, doesn't mean that you are best. Just look at other videos. Ahh whatever. Your car is great man, you rock, well done. Maybe I was looking for some harder stuff then what I have done. Oh well, I guess it's just how this country is, pretty darn flat and sandy.
-
I would say too much work for what it is worth. I would look at getting new shockers for the back (maybe custom mount with double shockers) and ifyou can't get new shockers for the front, make a custom adapter to fit newer (two bolt design) shockers to the 71 style hubs. (I assume the EA71's use the same hub design as the EA81?) I've even heard of someone doubling the shockers on the front as well.. Just food for thought.

EA81, piston to valve clearance?
Phizinza replied to Phizinza's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Oh, sorry, mis-understanding. I always think way to much as well. It's time to get out in the shed and start doing.. But everytime that happens I need to get back on the computer and learn how to do what I want. Hmm.. Oh well, all in good time. -

A mig welder with ally wire and gas, an angle grinder, some ally tube, some brass fittings, a drill, a die grinder, is about all you need if you buy an adaptor to fit the carb you want to use. Oh, and yes you will have problems getting the two carbs running right and the linkage up. But really it just requires a little bit of ingenutity.
