  1. It's very possible. Will take a fair bit of time. A mate of mine, my brother, and I done the same thing about a year back now. We made ours out of 2" by 2" alloy block and bought the front strut lift blocks (only 2" for legal reasons.) We got a cold cut blade for the circular saw and it cut the alloy very nicely. We also had to measure all the bolts our selves because no one wanted to give that away, which I could understand. I have no idea what the bolts were now, but I'm pretty sure they are all 12x1.25mm thread. We figured half the cost of the lift kit from a seller was just the cost of the bolts. So there isn't a huge saving doing it yourself. Oh, and be prepared to have your car off the road for at least a week..
  2. One thing.. If you have never driven a vehicle you claim to be worse then a Subaru, then keep quite... Yota's are good. Trust me.
  3. Here is a pic of about the hardest public offroading we could find the other day after 3" of rain. Even this we probably could of got in a lot of trouble for. Pic is of my brothers 2" lifted EA81 wagon with a welded rear diff. http://offroadingsubarus.com/images/subaru_4wd_dirtroad1.jpg Aftermath http://offroadingsubarus.com/images/subaru_4wd_dirtroad2.jpg This was the hardest offroading I've done for over a year. Execpt for the sand, but sand is just so boring now... Maybe it's now time to do a car up for the street.......
  4. I wouldn't ask there. They all talk bull**** :-p I know where the real wheel'ins done. I wouldn't bother copy righting someone elses video, I only post video I have recorded. But I can see your point, and if you don't want to sell me a copy that's cool. I would just like to be ablt to show the local Subaru 4WD club how it's done. I bet a Aussie posts next and gives me a right ol for this... haha, show us your extreme offroading or **** off (sorry, that's my true aussie opinion coming through.)
  5. Finally. That's more like it. That's what I wanted to see. Although a lot of that is still just going down hill. I'm not saying Subarus won't go up, I would just like to see some pictures and video of them going up that stuff. Cheers,
  6. Yeah, that would be a good idea.. But here in South Australia we are lacking trees, rocks and rain (well, we just had a very unsual 100mm in the last week, but it normally is dry and sandy.) The places I've got Subarus stuck would be beside a road with at least a 200 meter walk to any tree. In a mud slush beside a river with maybe 2km to the first tree. And on a beach, you guess it... Not a tree in sight. Although we always carry a steel wheel to bury and land anchor off if need be on the beach and dunes.
  7. I'm not saying I doubt that subies do this kinda stuff. I'm just saying I want to see it. You see the best I have near me that isn't closed is a couple of creek crossings (which if you knew South Australia, you would know there is no water in creeks.) And a lot of sand dunes. Which quite frankly aren't impressive to me as offroad material. Can the DVD be shipped to Australia for me? I'll pay the extra postage.
  8. That's pretty good for stock. But I really want to see what a modified subie can do, perhaps one with a t-case and some 29+ inch tires. Some quick google video searching brought up these videos. This is the sort of stuff I want to see a modded subie go through. http://video.google.com.au/videoplay?docid=-1527040215531229692&q=extreme+offroading http://video.google.com.au/videoplay?docid=-4229393320554514478&q=4wd http://video.google.com.au/videoplay?docid=5412194443377654082&q=4x4+competition The last one looks like they are on a budget, most of them don't even have rear lockers.. Although I reckon a fair bit of it some subies could get through. I would just like to see some subies doing that kind of stuff, that's all. This stuff ain't to bad I reckon, but about the best I've seen subarus do http://www.loghomefamily.org/subaru/ (Thanks Rollie715 for sharing that with us)
  9. Ok.. I think I have a problem with my understanding of offroading and 4WDing. :-\ I can see that Subies are great rally cross and fun cars to drive. But what I want to see is slow stuff. Tough rocks to crawl on, deep water, slipery hill climbs. Not getting air (I know it's fun, and I've done it before, but I really don't classify it as 4WDing. It's more in the "fun" department.) Which is fine by me. I don't mean to be ignorant, but I really can't see why you would need even $20K in mods to a decent 4WD to get up that hill Stinky. Although it was impressive to see the subie go up there.
  10. That's why I said a good discription would do.. I'm not talking about things heavliy modified trucks can do. Take this for instance. I went to the dunes with a mate of mine. He has a un touched 97 Daihatsu Feroza SX II. As in H/T's, stock diffs, no lockers, no lift, 1400kg stock, blah blah blah. So we get to this dune which is named "the wall of death". It was easy to go up, so we started right at the bottom and slowly incressed our run up by a meter at a time. I made it up with about 8 meters of run up (this is on hard rock surface, then it goes to soft sand up the hill.) He made it up with about 9-10 meters run up. I have a EA81DC Brat with a 2" lift, welded rear diff, 1150kg stock, 27" Kumho mud terrains and I'm not afraid to thrash it.. The way I see it, our "cars" are nothing more then light dirt vehicles when stock compared to a stock small 4WD. And another time I was going up a sand hill (yes, that is all we have here in South Australia) I could only go up what the Bits-r-missin Pajero with M/T's and a Diff locker. And that thing weights over 2200kg.. I don't want to argue that Subies are crud, I believe they are really good for road driving and light offroading. I just want to see/hear what some people have done in them. Because I think I, and many others, was giving the wrong impression that Subarus are great offroaders.
  11. By no means... I just want to see what all these people are going on about. I think my problem why I can't do any extreme (break something) offroading is because they have closed all the gates to the good spots and they wern't that good anyhow. I just want to see a Subaru doing something a slightly modified other 4WD can't.
  12. Alright.. I post today because I want to know what you've seen subies do. I was going to make this a "with your own eyes" only but I've changed my mind. So if you seen it on video only that is cool too. A link to pictures or videos would be ideal, but a good discription would do as well. Show/tell me what you've got. I am keen to know. I would post but about the most extreme thing I've seen a subie do that isn't just doing a huge jump (I don't classifie getting massive air as a offroad acheivement) would be driving through a lake and losing traction with the bottom (rattletoaustin's trip?) Or... no, I am not really impressed with what I've seen so far. See everyone makes out that subarus are better then most other 4WD's. But everything I have seen shows me you have to do quite a lot of mods just to come up against good 4WD's.. Can't say I have faith in Subarus as good offroaders. Although they make great cross over vehicles (on-road to off-road.)
  13. Lots of blocks, jacks, and hands is all that is needed.By the sounds of how much you know about the underneth of your car, I suggest you buy a lift kit, not make on.
  14. Wouldn't work... subies too light. My brothers winch can pull his EA81 wagon up hill with a trailer with all four wheels locked up.. It was quite a sight.
  15. I doubt it would be a normal EJ block as well.. I don't see a point in modifiying a block when you could build a diesel designed block that is going to do the job much better and for longer. Plus, hows a EJ block suppose to take 20 to 1 compression ratio
  16. And for those who don't know. L-series is 85 to 94 wagons, sedans and coupes. Basicly EA82 body
  17. http://overkill.superhost.pl/news/2004/devil_horns_story.jpg A mate of mine (heavy metal kinda guy) got me doing this. Although now I am not sure if it will offend people or not.. Ahh, I don't care if it does. Put up with it. Ofcause it also comes with the heavy metal nod (no, not quite like that, thats a bit to hip hop for me)
  18. Unless you plan on spending your lifes savings I reckon you'll have to wait at least a couple of years after the engine has been released into the market before you will be able to pick one up. So by then you never know what there might be avalible to put one in your car..
  19. I pulled the whole dash out of my legacy wreck (for the wiring loom.) Wasn't too hard to get out, maybe 3 - 4 hours. But I would not want to put it back in. In stead I reckon I'd just make up a alloy plate with a few bends, lots of holes + gauges, and lots of switches... The original dash ain't that great anywho. I'm guessing this may be someone elses idea too  I'll wait and see.
  20. Looks more like the proper 4WD flairing rubber with wire insert to me (don't know if you US guys get that stuff..)
  21. Great work .. I am just using the stock gaurd on the front and letting the rear diff take the hits. That alloy would of cost a bit, huh?
  22. That's alright.. There is a blue one here in Australia as well that you may have seen. Sorta the same thing, only it has no tailgate and it also has a shoot out the back for drag racing. Still, if I have a WRX engine.. or even a STi engine and trans it would be in my Brumby within a couple of months... And the lift kit would probably come out.. maybe not.
  23. Heres what I make out of all this. Top one is the clearance between the output shaft (with all the gears on it) to the pinion shaft running through it. 2nd is where to find how much the case is out and what it needs in the way of shims. 3rd is how much the pinion shaft can move inside back and forth in output shaft. And last is the backlash between the crownwheel/ring gear and pinion gear. Question is, where do I messure that? There isn't much in my FSM about the inside of the gearbox, only a discription on how the synrchro's work and a diagram of all the gears and shafts. I'll go check the casing now for that special number...
