The picture would not come up for me. I am guessing the required lack of sealant by use of the sheer paper gasket is likely because a lot of sealants squeeze into the pump and contaminate. Just a guess on my part. Good luck. If done correctly, you should obviously have no leaks but depending on just how deep those scratches are...

Kinda like mine but I like your roof rack better and I have the rectangular quad headlamps.I want to convert the inners to LED and seclude with a separate switch for high beams offroad and such. Good find and a fun car. -
EA81 tries to fire ...my turn

If there is a ballast resistor on the coil, check that. They are notorious for the secondary starting circuit failure. -
I have simply forgotten if they have a ballast resistor but if it does, check it. It may have shorted.

Octane Rating for our Brat
lrgvanman replied to bratkozo914's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I would say that as long as it doesn't ping or diesel, it should not be a problem but let's see what other folks say. -
Goodbye pingtashi.... hellooooooo Weber

I have one on my ea81, there when I bought it. Best of luck and I think you'll love it when it's dialed in. -
I have an ea81 1984 GL Wagon that has headrests that seem frozen in place. They won't go up or down. I would like to take 'em off for the simple act of putting on seat covers, otherwise, I guess I'll have to slit the top of the cover slightly and throw in a couple of stitches to close it back up.

EA81 Brat Still won't start. Help!

If it fires after spraying carb cleaner in it, then my guess is that it is lacking fuel. -
Silicone axle boot on brand new axle
lrgvanman replied to Nickoli's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Heat is an issue as well. The exhaust shield on my ea81 was not reinstalled after some exhaust work was performed, soon after, my passenger inner boot split. Rears, I don't know, but if it is somewhat stock, I am guessing that the drivers rear is nearest an exhaust heat source, I'm just guessing that it may be the culprit if on that side. Best of luck. -
API SJ - suitable oil?
lrgvanman replied to KiwiBrumby's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I started using Castrol High Mileage 20/50 (Synthetic) in my EA81 (1984 GL Wagon). This oil quieted some of the lifter noise and seems great so far. -
84 DL wiper arm conversion
lrgvanman replied to YnotDIY's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I haven't personally but I have wondered the same after nearly losing a wiper several times on the freeway. I took a wire bread wrapper and secured through a hole in the blade area to the arm and it has held for a while but I would much rather have a more permanent solution than jerry rigging it. -
Could be a locking lug nut. If stock wheels, likely it will be available at the dealer and if special wheels, try a major tire shop. They may either have a replacement or tool to remove what you have and replace with new.

EA82 Runs hot highway, but cool on street roads?
lrgvanman replied to Rust's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
A clogged exhaust does this but check into it more before futiley blaming it. I had a Ford van that had two Catalytic Converters, the one incorporated in the exhaust downtube/manifold was clogged and so it was the same result. Fine in town but heated on the freeway. Good Luck! -
Found a second fuel filter?
lrgvanman replied to Romen's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I have often wondered the same, as my 1984 GL wagon is like that. I have just under 200,000 miles on mine and I haven't checked on a replacement but I expect to purchase one as soon as affordable. I haven't checked, but some of us use RockAuto for parts and I have had good experiences with them though all parts are not available. Try http://www.rockauto.com/ . Best of luck to you. -
EA81 Drum Brakes... Where do the Springs Go?
lrgvanman replied to Sapper 157's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I agree with silverhelme as far as whether they rub or not. The crucial topic is not to switch the top spring with the bottom spring, though. When I did mine, I could not see any points of interference behind the shoes and if they are on the drum side, I don't believe they are an interference, either. -
colemanapp has mentioned the steering u-joint and I think that my be my car's problem when it is not moving and the experience of having to turn the wheel hard. Someone before me removed the power steering components and 'manualized' it due to a leaking power steering hose and so it binds on turning the wheel while standing still. It seems fine otherwise but does have hardly noticeable freeway play. I would check it, still, it is a possibility.

84 Brat Electrical Gremlins...
lrgvanman replied to TonyF's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I have seen some peculiar things with different manufacturers. I had a '61 Ford Falcon that did weird things like mentioned except the involved were the turn signals and it had a nonsensical result. It has been so long that I have forgotten just what it was. My '84 Subi GL wagon has had a wire linking the low beam headlamps together as I got it that way. I now suspect that you have just uncovered the reason regarding the relay. Thank you. I wish I could send you some answers but I don't know them. Have a great day and Best of Luck to you! -
That kinda has me baffled and I have the same year, carb, etc. Just a guess but have you checked the choke setting when cold? Wishing you luck.
