  1. the search option seems dead. does anyone have a link to prior posts about it?
  2. Hey guys Does a 2002 Legacy GT 2.5 non turbo need its valves adjusted?
  3. "Unibrook" seemed to answer my question under the recent post entitled "Another misfire issue" He said: Have you ever changed your front 02 sensor? An old sensor will give you misfire cel. Pay careful attention to whether the car drives fine when cold, but then misfires when warmed up? (if so, this is how a bad front 02 sensor behaves.) If it misfires equally when the engine is cold and warm, then probably a diff sensor or diff issue. Actually pay attention to this, and take notes! I did this, and it led me to figure out it was my front 02 sensor that needed replacing....many thx to others on this list who pointed my nose in this direction. You can change your front 02 sensor in your driveway in an hour...just like changing a spark plug. Thanks Unibrook!! Now to my other question.....does a 02 2.5 Legacy GT non-turbo need the valves adjusted? I don't know why I hear valve ping under load sometimes (not bad gas)...anyone? If in fact my oxy sensor is bad causing the misfire, could it also cause occasional valve pinging?
  4. Sorry Mike I would not have mentioned that had I known the economic situation
  5. I am thinking about buying one myself...but I'm wondering if I should get one with some kind of diagnotic abilities as well. BUT...I don't know much about how to use or understand that stuff. Anyone who does, can you offer insight as to how savvy you need to be to use one? Otherwise I'll end up with the $100 one
  6. I have to say tho...it's crazy to replace old pulleys with old pulleys...
  7. in May I bought a beautiful 02 GT sedan with 70k on her (5 speed 2.5 non-turbo) craiglist BTW...and I'm still alive!!! Owner had just done the "60k" dealer servicing (looking at receipt, what a rip off!!! basically changed every fluid...replaced plugs, air filter, bal. 2 tires..."checked" this and that...for $500) Anyway...has been running very smooth As the warm weather approached I started hearing two things with the window open once in awhile... 1) a mini backfire? sound (or pop sound) when shifting from 1st to 2nd...or 2nd to 3rd. Exaust system is very quiet so I don't think it has anything to do with that. Threw a 0420 code 10 days ago...reset and is still gone (one of the o2's was replaced recently with OEM)...related to popping sound? who knows 2) I hear some valve pinging sometimes...like bad gas or out of time engine...yet it does not throw a knock sensor code. Does this engine need valve adjustments??? Is not bad gas because it has been going on for some time And I hate those little heat shield vibrations...they really piss me off...I want to rip them off...anyone have good solutions?
  8. A few months ago I bought some OEM air filters for my 96 OB (pictured on the left, color orange---P/N 16546AA020F) Notice the white one on the right 16546AA080.....less pleats but much thicker and "fuzzier" (for a lack of a better word)---same exact size. This white one resembles the type of paper from my daughters 2006 accord (OEM filter) Can anyone research why the two different types? Are both still available? Why have both? I think the white one would be superior...able to catch finer particles...thoughts?
  9. the gray scotchbrite is finer than the dark red/maroon....where does the green fall as to courseness/fineness? I've never seen it
  10. My first TB job was on the 96 2.5 Outback of mine (DOHC) I did not use special tools It was not as easy as the last poster mentioned but doable The problem is that the driver side cams are in tension when they are lined up The upper will, if you are careful, stay in posion if you turn it by hand into position (slowly carefully) I got the belt installed on both pass side cams....over the top pulley (Heading toward the drivers side)...around the center gear thing...around the tension pulley...over the drivers side cam sprocket (carefully)...rotate the lower driver side sprocket and slip belt on All the while the lowest pulley (slightly on the pass side) is NOT installed. At this point I pull up on the belt with that pulley and slip the bolt thru and find the threaded hole Once it is together...pull the tensioner pin...it moves out fairly fast...but I don't think there is anything to worry about a tooth jumping at this point...won't happen I did have to do this a few times because it is tricky....but I do this each time and it works Would I like to have the tools? You bet...lol
  11. the local stealership wanted my mom to spend $80 to change them Anyone know where they are? What's the frequency for changing? thanks 06 forester
  12. if it has the old plunger style, you can't use the newer type can you?
  13. sorry...the IMPORT experts I have seen talk on here about them on ebay Those kits are pretty cheap!!! I need one for 96 2.2 Legacy L...it's $76! Comes with sproket tooth idler, 2 smooth idlers and the TB idler pulley ...and T belt I don't want to use that T belt tho...does anyone know if they can cutomize the kit and substitute one of those Gates racing belts they show in other kits? Do they sell the plunger type tensioner?
  14. Not sure on the vasaline though, I was always told not to use it on rubber as it has petrolium in it that dries it out. I am in the rubber business. Petroleum (oils)will not dry out a rubber. Oil contact on the wrong rubber types will cause the rubber to absorb it and start swelling. Vitons are the best for oil contact...nitriles (buna N) and then neoprenes. Here is a link for a tool to pull seals safely http://www.autobarn.net/lisleshaftpuller.html
  15. One of the guys on this board is a subaru tech and gave me this link for a tool...http://www.autobarn.net/lisleshaftpuller.html I have not needed it yet but I sure plan on buying it,,,,the crank and especially the cam seals were one huge PIA last time to get out Pm me me if you buy it and use it...would like to know if it is good thanks
  16. Can anyone help on this I would like to bid on a 6 disc changer on ebay but the guy does not know what car it fits (HE DOES NOT KNOW WHAT IT CAME OT OF) Here are the numbers off the unit 6 disc changer model 116240LS100 I want to use it in my 2001 legacy GT Anyone have access to dealer info that would identify?? thanks
  17. the "SOA"numbered wire set is NOT OEM? I recently got a price quote from 1st subaru (walker renton) for among other things a spark plug wire set---they listed P/N SOA430Q115---price was only 30.92--which I thought seemed almost too reasonable for OEM wires. When I punched this P/N into thier website...nothing comes up But, the individual wires each come up at 11.48 EA So...what's going on here?? Where is our resident SUbie mechanic to weigh in on this subject I would rather pay 45 for true OEM than 32 for something else.....well...I'd rather pay the cheaper price but since these cars are so damn sensitive, I'd rather pay more for peace of mind
  18. I have a lead on two nice heated seats for my 2002 GT sedan...I bought this for my fiance' as a surprise (have not given to her yet---it is gorgeous and she will flip...probably cry!) She is originally from costa rica and her tolerance to cold is well...low These seats would really add to the car My question: I see an unattached pigtail under the seat (my car does NOT have heated seats) Is my car wired to accept heated seats?? I can get 2 seats and the switches for $175 Got my fingers crossed......
  19. Is there really something to this? I remember hearing it said somewhere. I just replaced front and rear pads on my new 2002 GT ---also waxed it...she really runs faster now,,,LOL. Woman today at work says "you got a new car huh?" Yeah, another subaru I said. She askeds if it is brand new and she was shocked to find out it is 7 years old. she looks sweet!
  20. I read here someone mentioning the need to pull a vacuum on the AC system (I am assuming this is if you disconnect a line --- like I had to do) Why pull a vacuum? I have access to vacuum pumps at work How would you connect to the fill fitting on the car? When you attach the charge hose, won't it suck the can contents (liquid) too quickly into the system??
