You can switch between obd1 and obd2 wiring if you have the matching wiring from the manifold. I find it easier to keep the manifold intact since the fuel injection is the same. I have to disagree with @GeneralDisorder on this one however. I have personally trimmed each type of harness and i found the obd1 harness a bit easier to work with because the ecu connectors are separated (rather than just one big connector) and the super multiple junction is a lot smaller. The obd1 is much easier to keep the cel. There is no reason in my opinion not to use the 90-94 electronics, especially since the imprezas came with obd1 until 96 i think. Just take the dash off and rip everything out. Busaru youtube channel has loads of pinouts. Two advantages to the obd2 is that the alternator pigtail is simpler (there is a double diode on obd1) and you can simply ground the neutral switch to disable the vehicle speed sensor.

My ea82t acts wonks under full boost at times. I suspect fuel pressure, but i also plan on bypassing the knock sensor. Good info on the nissan parts @jono i have two dizzys I'll look at the modules but i can get my sorry as$ moving on my ej swap you got dibs on the modules.

Using an adapter pate will technically bolt up, I used one to adapt a dual range to an ej22. It was pre made by sjrlift. A guy here has a six speed on his xt, but it's backing a twin turbo ls6 haha! So if you or someone you know has fabrication skills, then you should be able to rig up whatever you want. Do some research on the gear ratios so you are sure that you have enough hp and torque to make it worth your while, or that it's even possible with existing rear diffs. Or install with matching sti engine for easiest results, but be ready for axle wackiness, they can be mixed and matched to some extent though...research that as well But i am feeling a slammed rx with one of those gm turbo v6 from the gnx, typhoon and cyclone backed by a t56 and posi for drifting or road racing. People have installed ls engines and 2jz, but i digress. Oh and one of the mods here that I personally met has a 2.5 in his brat, with entire legacy drivetrain, so if he wanted a six speed it would be a bolt on affair. That only requires custom crossmembers and driveshaft. Cheers man

Engine stand optional extra
sparkyboy replied to Steptoe's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Neat! I love subaru engines because two people can easily lift it. And the engine stand is perfect, but what is my solution when it comes time to install the clutch or inspect the rear main seal? I put the engine that is going into a vintage body on a tire, she deserves more love than that! Lol -

An pic of an wheeling mishap a few years ago. A little digging (12 hours) lol and once the snow melted she beasted out with the 4lo. And the ej22 that I put in kept us warm :-D i built that car with my gf at the time... Once we broke up, the first thing I did was get those gaudy stickers off of that beautiful paint haha! She was one of those obnoxious subaru chicks, no muffler or cat on her previous ea82 that went to the jy after skipped timing. This was before she met me, and she knew the baby lion would be better with me. A little before and after, note the paper plate! -

I was digging through some old pics while taking a break cutting a harness :-) The GL is the baby lion and the xt is ghost -
-
Wow that's factory fresh bro! Is she 4wd? How much did you pay? And what took you so long to post? haha I love those bodies, I have an 86 GL that I did an ej22 swap on and she smashes! Plus my eight five ex teezy (85 xt) That's her with my 77 camaro. I don't know where those god awful plastic headlights came from. My GL is the baby lion and the camaro is...cammy :-) What is the name you gave yours? Have fun racking up the miles! You have a sub or two in the trunk for maximum driving pleasure I assume?

As for your original idea, I bypassed the main relay while swapping my ej22 and I had erratic spark, but she was almost starting. Cheers for finding the problem, the relays themselves rarely fail.

EA81 wagon tailgate badge - white paint?
sparkyboy replied to baccaruda's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Wow, those look really nice. When you get to other designs would you do the xt turbo? Oh god i can picture it now digging through piles of dam outback and forester xt ugh... i don't know what is a worse bastardization of a past name the forester xt or the chevy malubu maxx ss? -
What front lip is that from? It looks pretty good already! If it were me I would try to either cut out those two vertical bars under your grille, but I think that space would need something to fill it like the vertical piece or two from a factory grille. For it to look factory though, the angles should match the grille, and then get those outside holes to match the turn signals and your car could be best of show. Put a tow hook through the drivers side or simply fill those in. If that lip were fiberglass I could make that happen, but it looks plastic and I don't know how to work with that. Even better would be to stuff an air to air intercooler. Keep the flat hood man! She would smash at autocross! There is a lip from a volvo that fits e34 perfect I see it sometimes at shows and I like to call the owners on it, it's always a good laugh. @jdmleggy97 Where are your projects located? If I bring the parts to do this to my xt will you help me with the welding and I will help you with the ej swap? Ummm...it seems like you would have that under control too but I would be willing to cut a wiring harness for you or give you the one in my 86. I have obd1 and obd2 but I still to have to cut the obd1.

ACC pedal stiffer after cross pipe swap !!
sparkyboy replied to Steptoe's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I know little of turbos, but maybe more vaccum or boost makes the throttle blade a little harder to move? Placebo effect? I'm out of ideas...lol How has the change to as smaller up pipe affected the feel of the engine? And what car are you boosting here? -
Help testing junkyard 5MT from EA82
sparkyboy replied to greatdane66's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
It's always good to have a spare laying around, especially if you can find a good dual range at junkyard prices. I can only tell you my experience with an untested manual trans, and that would be a muncie 3 speed that I purchased with an engine for my camaro. I remember that the only gear that I could rotate by hand and see the output shaft spinning was in 3rd. None of the other gears I could turn by hand, I assume it would just take more muscle to do so. That trans is a 1:1 top gear and is still in my camaro. But all the action was smooth. On that trans i could also select two opposite gears on the pattern one at the same time so one and two, and third and reverse could be selected and that would also make the trans unable to rotate. In comparison to the dual range the mincie is a very simple transmission both selectors middle is neutral and you can move the 1st and reverse and put the other one in the middle to select 2nd and third. I love the muncie 3 speed because first gear is left and down, like the old ferraris :-) but I digress slightly The dual range has three selectors and the 4wd? I never looked closely at mine because it has never given me problems, bushings and all. And I did an ej22 swap and everything...it's kind of a shame I don't know my own car better now that I think about it lol If the 4wd is in neutral the output shaft won't spin I assume? I also don't know exactly how the two detent system will work in relation with the stick and selectors, im trying to picture it but there could be many combinations where the trans is in two gears at once. So I if I were you I would find 2wd and fifth and try to turn by hand I guess you will have to watch for the axle parts turning. Or just try every single combination and be certain i tried them all. What is the technical term for where you shove the axle into? The cup? Housing? You know what I am saying, it sounds like you know what you are talking about. Then I would follow @el_freddo and @fergloyale and @al zheimer advice to really see if the trans works, then come back with another post and put that camaro fool up on the dual range game Good luck man! I see them from time to time and I am about to start hoarding the d/r and I let a posi slip by me once. Never again! I see you have only a few posts so welcome to the forum, if not for usmb I would not have done the ej22 swap on my 86 GL or bought my 85 xt -
+1 on that If I could go back and tell myself what I would do different reguarding the swap: 1) Since I was an efi rookie I would have studied the pinout and wiring diagram for a long time first. I tackled all the mechanical stuff first and had plenty of time to do so, but I was under the impression that I was just gonna send my harness to someone and pay them to do it, ($250) but I was going low budget and the adapter plate from sjr was a better buy. But you can fabricate so that would be something for you to think about if you want to keep the dual range, considering you are building a wheeler I am assuming you don't want awd. Gotta keep 4lo on the brat! I did eventually sit there with a diagram and pinout and a bunch of diffrent color highlighters and took detailed notes with pin location, wire color(s) (some of the wires change colors after the super multiple junction), and function. Then I took a piece of tape and put it on the wire itself near the harness and it was cake after that.. Plus I learned something for once in my life and I know my own engine a lot better now. 2) Don't drink and do critical work on the engine. This is funny but I installed the valves in the wrong place on the drivers side so when I thought it was the big day I was only running on two cylinders. Luckily zero compression on whole side made me face palm as hard as I ever have but the next day she was golden and I learned that the drivers side hg can be changed in the car, just remove the motor mounts and jack up one side as needed. The pass side looks to be the same. 3) Take more pictures Things I felt like I did right the first time: 1) Buying an entire donor car, and parting the rest. Just the parts paid for almost half of the entire swap, a 95 leggo was t boned but otherwise fine for $500, and I got about that for selling the parts. Yuur 96 is the best phase one because it is the only year with adjustable lifters and non interference. 2) Taking my time and labeling as much as I could when removing the harness. It saved me a lot of headaches but I was so lost at one point I was on the verge of tears just thing to get the damn thing to power up. Turns out that I needed to power the red wires, as well as the red and yellow stripe ones. I was holding the fuel pump relay between my teeth and the main relay with my finger and I felt them both click on, I started dancing around like snoopy. 3) most importantly, taking my time and having fun while doing it. Happy wrenching, you are a lucky guy to own so many brats One more piece of advice would be to have a general understanding of the differences between the obd 1 and obd 2. An example would be that when I was lost in the wiring I looked at a volkswagen bus website and saw how important the brown double diode is, the engine won't start without it, and if it's backwards you will get spark, but at the wrong time and it won't look erratic at all if you just ground the spark plug and crank...so yea imagine that. So I spend forever looking for this double diode and it turns out obd2 cars don't have that diode! D'oh Oh one last thing, once you hook up the evap canister, look at the front of the fuel tank and switch the return lines. If you don't the vaccum in the tank caused by the fuel returning high will cause fuel to drain out of the evap canister unless I went out and removed the gas cap to break the vaccum, and random stalling from too rich and took forever to restart...ask me how I know! haha!

Man, i wish you were in denver. There are still piles of phase ones here. And i have been looking for another sube nut to do this with years! Have you read numbchuxs write up? I put an ej22 in my 86 GL. Looking back it was easy, i took my time over 8 months to get everything right, but now the ej looks factory and runs great! And keep the dual range bro! Especially if you hardly ever use 4wd. I love 4 hi in the snow. My sube handles better than my 325 ix in the snow and i don't think awd would be the same. I went in knowing nothing of efi, but i tucked the ecu neatly into the glove box. Happy wrenching man! And your brat will smash after thus swap, my GL will out accelerate my camaro, but not outhandle on pavement, even wet. I will be doing this same swap on my 85 xt soon.

87 XT air suspension swap
sparkyboy replied to makipsee's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I am an xt owner and i understand that most people simply "upgrade" to conventional struts. It must be nice to have it working, but you can't find factory parts. A working factory air compressor is probaly ebay gold! But the xt already sits sky high, with pumped up shocks they must sit extemely high but ride like a skateboard. But i had air shocks on my camaro and i hated them looking back, but they did level her out! My air suspension was removed long ago, and she sits level. I am not aware of any diffrence between the early and later xts suspension wise, or any L body for that matter, with the exeption of the five lug hubs. There was a guy on here years ago that had (hopefully still has) a beautiful slammed xt and he tried the hat flipping trick and was disappointed. You get about a one inch drop and have to wallow out one of holes @alongtimeacoming maybe someone did the hat trick on yours? No not scoring three goals but once yours is level feel free to throw your hat or a party or your gf out of bed for badmouthing your xt or whatever you want! Haha On a side note, i am glad to see that the old gen subforum has kind of become xt central lately. I never could join that xt forum because the website was broken. -
EA82 Cooling issues
sparkyboy replied to saltytheseadog's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
@jono Could you elaborate on the sealwel block thing you are talking about? I am going to try to get my ea82t as many miles as possible, and hopefully crank the boost up within an inch of her life before i take it out for my ej and sell the engine. She runs well, 100,000 miles only and no ticking. But looking at the head for cracks will determine the plan. Has the situation with the oil pumps changed? And does anyone make a good t belt kit and hgs? What else can anyone tell me about the ea82t? I messed about with a carby ea82 but i pulled that anchor at the first sign of weakness after she skipped timing about a month after my bro and his gf changed both t belts. I sold the engine to a local sube guy and he gave it to his kid for xmas a few years ago :-) -
Engine Rebuild kit for EA82T?
sparkyboy replied to JonOfScio's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Oh man that is HILARIOUS!!!! Is there a sticky hall of fame? I guess Jon must have enjoyed his twin turbo ea82, I am not sure two would fit under the xt hood, it needs a mod to fit the ej intake, does any of the real sube dudes here have any info on that? Anyway Jon seems a bit like me getting all geeked with my big plans so...here is what I think might have happened cause its how would go about things, but I am a bit older now so I might take a more conservative approach, time wise at least 2004-2008 First priority is to slam the xt and make america scrape again. Sorry for the politics, I know it's inappropriate on a car forum but I am trying to get a bill passed where everyone is required to own one car at least two inches lower than stock height so everyone drives more carefully. The bill was originally for electric cars, but I changed it to include slammed. If it's passed then yes, you can slam your prius to get your license. It really worked out because my local no fat chicks ordinance failed. If the slam bill fails then maybe I can get with some people to try and get some medicinal marijauna to the people...we'll see vote for me if you live in aurora, CO! 2008-2012 Love the ea82tt, I would screw with a tandem setup and everything until I break something, I read if you monster boost those engines, they will make about 200 hp for a short time haha Then in goes the ej22 I have sitting around, I'll just slap my IHI turbo on there because I have two of those already, and I have some fun, but wind up taking the turbo crap off so I have more control autocrossing. then someday I do a full Sti swap and really smash and almost kill myself on the tail of the dragon. 2012-2017 The politics did not work out because people are starting to make me sick, except people who like dogs ( I quit in disgust when they passed a pit bull ban, but I did help it get repealed) and vintage Chevys, subarus, and bmws. It has taken me this long, but now i can race my bros e30 which keeps getting faster with these nutty s52 and m60 swaps, but he dosen't want to race on gravel or dirt, too low, too much power and rwd. I finally fixed the air shocks on my xt so i can get it. 2017-2019 I am the guy putting the LS engine in an xt Well I am 15 years too late, but that's fashionably for any vintage car endeavor. Oh I just realized I forgot to mention the body work in my 15 year plan so slammed and primer it be. I wonder how it worked out for Jon? I hope he got to live the dream and whip her around the tail or up pikes peak or something. Oh, the president ripped of my slogan and I never got paid. I shared my story with the dude that created tetris and he said not to feel bad. No Subaru related regrets though, except that i didn't start hoarding ea82 oil pumps hahaha! -
Engine Rebuild kit for EA82T?
sparkyboy replied to JonOfScio's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Thanks Crazyeights! A couple of cool old subes in Boulder. And a sad pic from Denver. @JonOfScioI'm glad that you are saving an xt from the same fate. You can't buy a car from the junkyard here anymore The xt is rare to begin with, less than 100,000 worldwide over the six year production. Sorry to hijack with a bunch of pics, and answer your engine questions with a bunch of xt trivia, but I'm a geek like that, I can't seem to resize the xt6 pic in the junkyard, but you get the idea. Cheers man! Happy wrenching! Here is the v8 build for some bedtime reading / xt envy https://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/topic/165601-xtv8-build/?hl=swap This guy is nuts! In a good way. -
Engine Rebuild kit for EA82T?
sparkyboy replied to JonOfScio's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
@JonOfScio post some pics man! My Subarus: my 1986 GL is named the baby lion and the 85 xt is named ghost. There is someone here with a really nice slammed black turbo one named the flying magpie, but he hasn't posted here in a long time. Most people have never seen a vintage xt in real life. I saw one once and was sure to get a pic! And I saw one in the junkyard once. Someone has a sweet xt6 in boulder, CO. The early ones have the flat rear bumper and looks way better than the 6 cyl. years. -
Engine Rebuild kit for EA82T?
sparkyboy replied to JonOfScio's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Have an ej engine standing by for when the ea82t asss-splodes! Just kidding, I have a 1985 xt turbo they are awesome cars, the definition of 80s japanese wackiness. I haven't checked to see if the passenger side head is cracked yet. Mine was involved in a collision with a deer and someone replaced the hood with a regular one. I don't have a posi either, didn't the GL-10 have a posi? New oil pumps are not available new anymore, but some have had luck finding one that has been sitting on the shelf for a while, and ea82 guys hoard the factory ones, so they are out there. And the t belt kit is awful, I used an Aisin one on my carby ea82 and it skipped timing in like 1000 miles. So I got of that turd and put the ej in. The digital dash is kickass homes! II hope yours works! It's 3d and it was designed by some guy at atari. And it was most aerodynamic and first production car with a cd player, and all kinds of other goofy crap. The asymetrcal steering wheel shaped like a gun, and all the stupid aircraft crap, etc... The prototype had a printer. Are you going to slam yours or lift her? Or keep her factory fresh? I think they look a little goofy at stock ride height, but are one of the best looking subes lowered. The 4wd is beast too :-) in the snow at least, I'm not taking no vintage xt off roading! But I bet she's nice off road too. I do have an ej22 standing by for a swap someday, the ej is way better than the ea82. I have an 86 GL with a 2" lift and an ej22 and she's great, my GL will murder my xt in a drag race. I understand that the factory ecu can handle about 12 psi and the n/a pistons are low enough compression you can use them with low boost, so I might slap my IHI crap onto the ej and see how she does. That being said the xt is a blast to drive, even 110 hp, because of the cute little turbo boost. In fact, in 4wd she leaves harder off the line than any of my cars including my 86 bmw 325 ix and that has 200 hp and awd! And my 77 Camaro gets wheel hop real easy if you just dump the clutch. Side step the clutch right as the boost is building and you'll be grinning like an idiot, wondering how such a slow car can take off so fast. It's unfortunate that Subaru bastardized the xt name by calling those grocery getter outback and forester xt, just because they have a stupid turbo...So when you tell someone all happy and exited that you just bought a Subaru xt be ready for the response "oh the outback or the forester?" Have a snappy retort ready. But you are getting a bit ahead of yourself here, you need to borrow some money or pawn something and swoop that xt like right now! Before someone else buys her because there are weirdos that think those cars are cool. There is some twisted f**k here on this forum installing a 6.2 ls6 with twin turbo for about 1000 hp, because the xt he has with the sti swap was too slow...damn! But you'll get her man, take her to a show asap and hang around your car for a bit, it's funny most of the comments are either "what the hell is this?" Or "Look! A Subaru xt! sweet!" I sincerely hope that the digi dash and cd player are still there and working, the factory checker seats are still in good shape, and that you still have the hood emblem. It's the only square one. All the other subes had the old oval one. It's funny because the oval one is on the trunk! wtf? Why not another square one? Sorry for the long post but the Subaru xt is that cool. I get all exited when I hear about someone buying one. And they are so weird it's boggles peoples minds. I had a kid ask if mine could fly! The only sube made with pop up headlights! Haha! And there is an xt club that meets every year to drive up the tail of the dragon. And no you won't be racing any damn outback xts there, original s**t only! I guess we will have to wait for the guy with the LS swap on his xt to get too loose around a corner and we will pass him then :-D Anyway here is a pic of a cracked head. I understand the least crack prone are the third gen heads, but according to a very knowledgeable guy here who owns a sube shop says there are some critical parts that aren't being produced anymore like the oil pump and lifters and it's because subaru no longer supports the ea82. It's kinda funny but it seems like the engineers just slapped an ohc onto the ea81, but no parts interchange? And over time the ea82 has turned out to be a reliable engine, but worse than the ea81. Nothing wrong with pushrods! I hate changing one t belt much bless two! HAHA! -
Thanks for the input carfreak85! I know little of the second gen L bodies. Todd, I tried to send a text to the number you posted but it comes back on my phone as invalid recipient?? Here is my number, I am serious about buying the car, almost sight unseen but I won't be able to leave Colorado for at least a week or two. It's funny a deal for my bro to sell his bmw in Wa fell through or we would have been taking a road trip as we speak, we were supposed to leave yesterday but the guy backed out. 720-296-3920 Thanks, Aaron
