Man i hope my ea82t has the factory oil pump, are those rebuildable? I do want to enjoy my 1.8 as long as possible before doing another ej22 swap. She only has 100,000 miles on her! But...I have an ej22 ready for something.

Jono, in fact yes, I have a picture somewhere of my GL next to one. Some cool chick had hers factory fresh with the granny gear and 4wd. Those were definitely cool wagons, but at least here in CO, those are a much more rare sight than an L series. For the record, the first gen GLs and DLs are the prettiest of the ea platform, imho. -
Numbchux did a very thorough write up on the ej22 swap. Overall it was pretty wham bam and I ran into few problems, but I also spent more than a few hours studying a pinout and wiring diagram and the wiring had me literally on the verge of tears trying to power everything up, but if I can do it, then anyone can. It was my first time straying from old carbs and getting into efi, and I had few electrical skills outside of wiring a stereo. It looks like you are well on your way to a full awd set up, I went the adapter plate route but now my old GL will absolutely murder my old Camaro in a drag race! And of all my cars (3 chevys, a bmw, and two subarus) my GL will do the longest burnout, well through second gear before getting any traction. The ea82t in my xt is my first turbo car and I know, only 110 hp but that car is fun to drive. A boosted n/a ej22 should make around 175-200 hp. I'm a tad worried about the dual range trans handling that power level, but I'll just be burning rubber and not slapping on slicks for full throttle 4 hi drag strip launches. That's what the xt single range 4wd is for! :-D I know exactly what you mean about grabbing something just because. My xt was purchased off this website because the previous owner didn't want to see her parted out or scrapped.

Wow man that is very good work and beautiful Subaru! If you paint those parts black, that will look like it's from the factory! Did you happen to have the 13" 8 spokes? I'll buy them! What I need in my life are the 13" formula mesh like on this xt. What engine is in the old girl right now? STi swap bro! Here is my xt project just for grins. I need to do the ej22 swap on this wacky thing. I still have to hack a harness :-/ but I have a resealed ej22 ready to go. I have an 86 GL with an ej22, it's a fantastic combo. I have almost enough turbo goodies to boost both my subarus, but I am currently waist deep in my Camaro.

L Series 5 Speed Wiring?
sparkyboy replied to Al Zhiemer's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
You have the carb model correct? But I think my 86 GL has an 8 pin plug for the engine harness. Does yours have a green wire with a yellow stripe I think? I believe that is the wire for the tachometer but that is all I can recall at the moment. I have an 85 xt sevice manual, and they came with carby so I'll look in there for you. Mine isn't hooked up right now due to an engine swap and the car is at my parents house at the moment. As far as reverse lights go, after I swapped my engine I had no reverse lights. It was no biggie for me, but the gf (who I initially did the ej22 swap for) wanted them back so the search began. For me, the little plug on the top of the trans was disconnected and all I had to do was connect them again. -
I have an 86 GL they are great cars. Mine has a 2" lift that i am thinking of taking off. For the mild off roading i do, the factory ride height has plenty of clearance. It's just a cheap homemade lift with spacers on the shock towers and an aluminum block between the body and subframe. You will need a slip joint to extend the steering shaft. I can take pics if you want to make your own lift. I have only seen a lift from just springs on first gen legacys using outback springs. I might sell the lift, but i am busy with my camaro at the moment. I had a set of 15" six lug chevy wheels drilled for 4x140 but i sold them, i like the factory 8 spokes. Expect 35+ mpg hiway with 15s, you essentially add another gear at speed. I got 40 mpg. As far as upgrading your engine, i understand that a weber carb is the way to go, i took the ea82 out and put in a ej22 a while back. Maybe your carb needs a good cleaning and rebuild kit, and perhaps different size jets. If you eliminate vaccum leaks as a reason. It took me a day working slowly to rebuild a rochester monojet carb, and i needed a size smaller jet because of altitude, but my camaro wouldn't rev. Idled fine and revved with no load on the engine. I think the Hitachi carbs have two jets. But try this because it's easy, take the air cleaner off and start the engine. Open the throttle to the point where she starts to struggle. Have a can of brake or carb cleaner and give her a little spray and see if she runs better. You can also use your hand or towel to mess with the throttle and cover the air horn. If it gets better, you might be running lean or have some fuel issue, but at least you can eliminate plug wires with this. It might give you a clue, maybe the fuel filter just needs changing (it's under the car near the pump) Happy wrenching! What is your cars name? Mine is the baby lion. Your girlfriend might be a keeper for saying no to selling the subaru! If you are ever in Denver, help me take this lift off and you can have it :-)

FOR LAUGHS and THE FUTURE

80s and 90s til death for me. Subaru sucks now, they are just toyotas with flat engines now in my humble opinion. I have owned a 99 outback, they are solid cars but not my cup of tea. They are fantastic grocery getters but too big and underpowered for crazy off roading. To answer your questions, i feel that the last year of the pretty Subarus was 94, the first gen legacy and impreza. It's funny that Subaru was always on the opposite side of using alphanumerics. The only body styles i would consider buying are those, from the 80s when they were actually unique. GL, DL, XT BRAT etc... I do love the early ej engines. I have a 95 ej22 in my 86 GL and i love that combo. +1 on the dual range transmission, i was buried up to the pumpkin in snow and a little digging and she beasted out of snow so deep the door wouldn't open. She's pretty sleeper now, actually faster than my 77 camaro in a drag race. If money were no object, i would sti swap my 85 xt, but it is and i think i would LS swap something first. Oh and three pedals only except for a th350 in my old rv. :-) -
Hmmm, I'll do a little more research on the subject and look into the hood clearance thing. Oh and a fan belt from a 96 or something ford escort works perfect for ej swap with no power steering or ac.

The 85 xt still has her factory ea82t The ej swap was in my 86 GL and to answer your question the engine dropped right in with no modifications I understand the xt is the same frame and suspension setup as the ea82 cars so I'll be happy if the swap goes half as smooth. And I am trying to slap the turbo setup on as quickly and cheaply as possible, I have 2 IHI turbos that came factory on ea82s

I did the ej22 swap into my 86 gl and couldn't be happier...10k miles and murdering jeeps and maximas ha I have a good ej22 -naturally aspirated, for my 85 xt but I would like to put the turbo parts from the ea82 on the ej. I have a crossover pipe that fits the ej ports, can I use the existing up pipe? Can I use the oil pressure gauge sensor to use for oil feed/ I have read that the factory ecu can handle small amounts of boost I plan on keeping boost around 8 or 10 psi, What is the factory boost for the ea81t? that car is a good amount of fun to drive and the ea runs well but stumbles a bit at times...maybe I can find her a new home but I don't imagine there is a ton of demand for this engine, but I did sell my old carb ea82 so who knows? I plan on messing with her a bit more to see if she can get past emissions to get the collectors plates, then I can really take my time with the swap. Thanks for the advice, this is my first turbo project. I would like to eventually lower her for autocross and what not

STOLEN 1988 Subaru GL Wagon

That's good news! -
You can install the 2.2 if you have time and/or really want to do it. If the engine physically goes together then you just need to move all the electronics. My concern would be if the ecu from the 95 could send the proper signal to the auto trans? If you had a manual in the ob this would be wham bam. Auto would be pretty gutless too I think the rear diff bolts are the same so you can use the legacy one if necessary. And buy a new clutch and do less burnouts :-) but measure beforehand i guess. Then you have to get the wiring haress from the donor car then you can install the 2.2 into your ob. It's a lot of work and you have to be a little electrically inclined. It's a pain to remove the harness from the car and i must have spent 25 or 30 hours trimming. If you know electronics then maybe 8 hours i would guess. I have an ej22 in my 86 and i trimmed the harness myself. I was at times a bit lost, but that was my first time really getting into electronics. I literally only had prior electrical experience wiring car stereos and it's really like a big stereo mixed with a maze and some wheres waldo sh!t.

If you have time and the weather is suitable for you, remove the thermostat and see if the car functions normal otherwise. And someone can drive it if it's necessary. I have experienced the same thing with my ej22 in my 86. These cooling systems are very sensitive to air bubbles and i found that using a vaccum filler provides the best results, but I have also found that the filling on an incline is effective. Occasionally squeezing the lower and upper hose so you can hear the jiggle valve will help remove any remaining air bubbles. Who puts the thermostat on the bottom like that? I understand the ej is very sensitive about spark plugs as well, ngk only bla bla bla

STOLEN 1988 Subaru GL Wagon
sparkyboy replied to 88SubieSnack's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Dirtbags. Who would steal one of those? That body style sticks out like a sore thumb these days, my 86 gl can be spotted a mile away. I feel your pain, my 92 legacy got stolen and she found her way back to me. In fact, her ej22 is in my 86 :-) You will likely see your car again after she sits for a few days. -

If someone makes the square one for the front of the xt i would be one happy dude -
A dirty iacv will cause a surging during idle, from about 750-1200 rpm every other second or so but not cause the engine to stall. It's easy to remove and clean. I think you can use any ej maf as long as the plug matches, i am not aware of any diffrences when did they change to map? There must be a procedure to test the maf with a multi meter? I am only familiar with the ea flapper Sounds like she just needs a tune up

EA82 distributor and timing
sparkyboy replied to Loyale_93's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
It is my understanding of the ea82 that if the ground on the intake manifold is no good, then the car will not run. Also, once I replaced an axle and stupidly forgot to connect my engine harness back together. The starter and fuel pump still worked but of course nothing at all. I scratched my head for nearly an hour after that one. This was on my Ej22 swap, but I imagine leaving the ea82 harness unplugged will have similar results. Are you getting any coughs or pops at all?- 19 replies
