  1. Man, they were available when I was thinking about buying some, which wasn't all that long ago...I can't seem to find them now
  2. If you aren't getting anything at all it is probably the pos. side cable. Does the horn or radio still work? The exact same thing happened on my xt today ant I was thinking wtf? It's impossible to leave anything on to drain the battery completely with this car. Unlike my chevy van, and 86 GL, which both can have the key removed at any position. Very convienent
  3. S**t I would just delete the power steering. My old 92 legacy felt pretty good p/s delete. I understand looping the lines and modding the rack is pretty easy, but i never went that far. Of course an outback is a bit heavier than a first gen leggo, you didn't mention what car you are installing this engine into. Oh yeah an old ford escort fan belt will drive the alternator. I deleted my ac as well unfortunately, so no idea on that. My first subaru hg attempt was a 2.5 dohc and i just slapped it together cast iron style (the only other one i did at that point was a 70 250 inline six for my camaro) And she blew a hg weeks later because I didn't even use sandpaper on the heads, but the strait edge looked good haha! Then I did it properly and she was good for years. I'm certainly not suggesting that you unwittingly half assed it like me, but why did your other engine blow the hg? Why not do both so you can have a spare engine?
  4. I have never seen an ea82 fail bad enough to need a tow at 60k! not even at 160k My ea82t has over 100k :-)
  5. Try a heli coil, i did one on a spark plug, so they can be used for just about anything. Head bolt might be shaky, but they do it to old jaguars What are you trying to fix?
  6. Wow, you guys are animals. 86 GL, 95 ej22 swap 2" homemade lift Factory otherwise, I have gone nearly 15,000 since the swap no problems at all. I might not be in next years roll call, I am taking the lift off soon
  7. I am very interested as to what the shop thinks of this, they should have given you a nice refund or offer something for all the headaches
  8. Once my 77 chevy g10 was only running on five cylinders due to a burnt valve. (250 ci inline six) When she failed the e test i retarded the timing so much she was barely running, and she barely passed :-) maybe i advanced it, it was so long ago and i was really just doing what my dad was instructing me to do.
  9. My 92 legacy failed the emissions test because of a faulty knock sensor. (I believe I had high HCs and failed one of the other parameters as well) There was no check engine light and she drove fine most of the time, but I could get her to act up when driving a certain way. I changed that sensor only and tried again, because I was on day 7/7 for my free retest otherwise I would have done more. But she passed the retest. The fsm for the ea82t says you can test the knock sensor by hooking a multi meter to it and hitting the engine block with a hammer, ha! Luckily the ej one you can just take off and look :-) No vacuum leaks? She runs at proper temp, yeah? High HCs means not having a good burn or running rich? i would suggest timing, but you know...
  10. yes the wheels havent even been removed yet. My apologies, it's the LKQ in Aurora near peoria and 33rd ave
  11. Does your trans have the pull type clutch cable? It kind of sounds like the clutch is getting worn out or just needs some adjustment by tightening the cable if she shifts alright in warm weather. I admittedly know very little of anything past phase one years. Maybe if she gets worse over time then crawl the junkyards or CL for another trans is the step I would take then you would have at least one trans to open up and see all the goodies inside
  12. LKQ aurora I got the turbo stuff for my xt, injectors and sensors and some other random things (dome light, pitch stopper) White in color, auto trans 4wd body is straight, nice hood too. The interior is blue and in perfect shape. I thought about converting my GL to blue inside, but I have the crank windows. Seats look brand new. Factory stereo!!! Good lights Suspension, driveline is complete, all glass exc windshield I will see if the axles are oe. I checked and no LSD (Didn't turbo get those?) if you need parts let me know I can go tomorrow and maybe the day after, I might just grab this whole ea82
  13. Not intending to hi jack here, but my bmw actually does a lot better in the cold with atf. This was recommended by a very experienced time bmw mechanic for my 88 ix. 100% atf in a manual trans sounds odd but works well and quiets her down a lot in cold weather. Do subaru manual transmissions do well with atf? I have seen some home made formulas for the older sube 5 speeds, which included some atf, but was hesitant to try. To the op, spring is here in CO at least it is warming up...if she shifts fine in warmer weather just stick with gear oil until fall is what I would do, then you have all spring and summer to research what is best for your trans. My GL hates going into second below freezing, so i take a couple trips around the block in first and try second but when she won't go into that gear, she goes into 3rd just fine. I do have the ej22 in there so I can skip shift and it's not too hard on the engine, but the trans warms up and operates normally after about 10 mins of driving for me. Rev matching and double clutching help a lot in my case as well.
  14. Congrats on being the new owner of a brat, by the way. Did you know that the subaru brat is #1 on the Auto trader.com scarcity index? That is, number of searches vs. number or cars for sale. #3 Is the subaru xt, #8 is the bmw 325ix (I have one of each) :-) The Ford festiva and dodge omni turbo of all cars are top ten, and the ferrari f40 is part of that list as well.
  15. There are several options for 4x140 nowadays, just expensive. I REALLY like the ssr formula mesh wheels, $551 shipped, I want a set so bad for my xt!
  16. The hydraulic valve adjusters (HLAs) can be removed and pumped up with fresh oil to ensure proper lifter clearances and eliminate the common subaru valve ticking. The ticking is there becuase over time the HLAs can become soft or just refuse to pump up entirely with oil flow. I took the time to pump up my HLAs in my 95 ej22 before installing for a swap. (Also did t belt, head gaskets, seals etc...) and that engine is unbelievably quiet. If not for the exhaust you couldn't tell there is even a flat engine under the hood. On the other hand, the valves always tick in my 92 ej22 until she is warmed up. I kind of like the valves ticking a little, it sounds like an old sube, my m50 bmw ticks too like all the rest of them If you are in a rush you can skip taking the valve covers off, ticking valves are not an issue from my experience. Driven one for 25,000 miles ticking loud as f**k I thought 96 had the adjustable?
  17. If you need to add some, just get a funnel and fill it through the dipstick. Just be careful not to add too much. I just use any gear oil, 80w90 iirc
  18. Well damn, that's too bad. As far as old gen subes around here, a GL in the junkyard is a rare sight. Good luck getting your sube fixed up and drifting around again. Beautiful car by the way
  19. There is a 90 loyale at the junkyard i frequent. Can't imagine they are different at all. Want me to grab it for you? Shipping might be expensive though. I am in CO
  20. Oh, it would be hack and fab city. But way too cool! If I were going that far I would see if I can have a mid mounted with torque tube and transaxle situation, cause this might do a stoppie on steep hills braking like the corvair trucks. haha! I don't think I would have the heart to remove that adorable inline four and 4wd trans, unless I had two of them. The intake manifold is the size of your hand
  21. Will they let you into the record books as fastest subaru if you are using a gm engine?
  22. This subaru k truck is for sale for $7k in CO. 660 cc of pure fury making 37 hp. At the crank! :-) Sti swap anyone?
  23. You have been showing your brat some love! What is her name? That thing is going to smash when you get to drive her. Beautiful car. Do you have a set of jump seats? Oh and the reason that you accidentally broke that rear window is because you didn't scrape those cheesy stickers off sooner There are some cool builds on here, guys doing wrx swaps into ea81s and twin turbo LS swapped xts make me jealous! Keep up the good work man
  24. It's funny you say that because the ej22 in my 86 GL is the loudest ticking subaru engine I have, but she only ticks until she warms up. Meanwhile the ea82t that is currently in my xt is quiet as a church mouse. I have a 95 ej22 that was in my GL but will go into my xt when something happens. That engine is also nicely quiet. But to the op mentioning the junkyard: A definite +1 on the ej swap. It took me 8 months of weekend wrenching on my 86 GL and I could not be happier with the results. She has driven me about 15,000 trouble free miles and she really has just the right amount of power now to keep up with traffic and is a blast for merging and stop light drag racing. She had the carb so went from being much slower than my old Camaro (250 inline six) to being able to destroy her in a drag race. She won't out handle my Camaro though :-) I'm sure that you will get your ea running because these engines are old style easy. But if this engine ever gives you headaches or you break something look into the ej swap. It's easy if you aren't in a rush. Going from 83 to 135 hp doesn't seem like much numbers wise, but it's night and day on such a light car. A 63% hp gain. It cost me around $900 because I got a donor car for $500 and spent $400 on a head gasket and timing belt kit, valve seals and other misc, as well as $200 for the adapter plate. Just for gods sake whatever you do don't take her to the junkyard! Unless she is there to take an ej engine home :-) Ea era subarus are getting hard to find, sell her if you absolutely must. Someone will be thrilled but seeing a car like that in the jy breaks my heart at times. I have seen brats and xt6s and its sad knowing that this is their final destination in that form, offering what they can before they wind up as a civic fender or razor blades. It is nice to see that rare subes unfortunate enough to wind up in junkyards around here are always thoroughly stripped of parts before going to the crusher.
