  1. Working on old school subarus off grid is real life movie s**t. Skynet nor aliens (govt?) would be of any concern! I love subarus, for me its 80s bodies with factory turbo or ej22 or nothing at all. Not even a loyale! One exception: first gen legacy cheers man, welcome to the forum you guys seem like cool cats My subes: 86 gl w/ej22 85 xt turbo getting ej22t 88 gl getting ej22(t?)
  2. The L body subarus have a reputation for goofy camber because it's very easy to get a 2" "lift" you can just about do it with a stack of washers on the strut towers and pieces of wood between the body and subframe. That causes a cambered out duck toe look. I knew a guy years ago that pulled a factory ride height loyale behind an rv with a v bar and he had no complaints. I'll say this, my 86 gl has a "chintzy" 2" homemade lift with hardware store brackets and I have no problems, steering wise. Mine is also power steering delete, but I have no problems with the front wheels returning to center. I'm fact under heavy throttle it whips back too quickly if I am careless with my grip unless one of my tires loses traction. Open diff up front you see! Isn't the wheels not returning to center during towing a common problem on awd cars only? Now those are a pita to tow behind, you have to disconnect the driveshaft, or connect the stupid battery to your rv alternator to put the 2wd fuse in if equipped, but that will wear out duty solenoid c? I digress... Yea, keep it old school, Happy travels! @Crossthread Ed I love the handle, is there a story behind it?
  3. Bro I love that! Homemade rack to support the maf? Wiring everywhere and the distinctive sound letting all the neighbors know that the world is flat And just purring like yea brumby time fools hurry up and install me. Hauls azz what's the front posi situation? Boost for the brumby? The mullet chops are legit man, the hairstyle would suggest more than 2 ej swaps in 10 years! I'll say this about my experience with the ej swap on my 86 gl three years ago, my Subaru and efi game were lightweight. I was glad to have a donor car, but the days of the cheap donor car running are coming to an end. Good thing they built piles of these things, so in sube heavy areas here in the US finding a crashed one or junkyard engine is a piece of cake still. The first gen legacys haven't bottomed out yet because of the large production, and crappy grocery getter reputation, but they will be hot like the early integrals and 3rd gen f bodies. All it takes is a few gorgeous builds like some of these dudes ss and touring wagon builds, and the sema preview shows several mullet camaro. For anyone with an L body just please buy an ej and put it somewhere if you are an ea purist. Then years later you can take your ea81 with Weber to buy another sube with a broken ea82 to slap the ej in. If sube are scarce this swap involves little monkeying with the factory wiring, just the wiring for the gauges is needed, so putting the ea back in all polished like a jewel with turbo relocation kit for your attempt at best of show would be a bolt on affair.
  4. Ummm...if she bogged in reverse I would suggest timing or too quick an advance...I don't think ignition advance is adjustable on these though? Are all the vacuum lines in order? I would think the advance might be vaccum related on these. I would start with that then maybe look at fuel pressure? Good luck man, let us know!
  5. Once again I was the only L body This first gen turbo was my favorite sube, I parked my 86 gl with ej22 next to him. Those two cars side by side attracted quite a crowd! Lots of coupes and boost today Cheers boys!
  6. The ea81 fan is smaller than ea82? I ask because the biggest flat rate box is $17 to ship I can see how an ea82 fan fits... I placed a reader for a mechanical temp gauge where the plastic plug goes for ea82 radiator and for a long time I just air flow cool my car. It's fine for the street so I would do that until your fan situation is in order. It is a bummer cause you can't go off roading.
  7. Giles my friend, you have just joined the old school subaru big leagues. I remember when I discovered the ej swap. I had to do it despite not knowing a thing about efi. The ej engine was the successor to the ea engines. I believe gm owned 30% of fuji at the time, and developed the engine with them in the mid 80s for the impreza in 88, that car got the ej18. The number indicates size. The ej22 is the most common, that engine was in the first gen legacy. The ej22 is rated at 135 hp and is superior to the ea in every way I can think of. Single timing belt, a decent sized coolant cross over (the ea 82t Achilles heel) igniter and coil instead of disty... The best part is that they built piles of them and they quite literally drop right the hell in to an 80s body, the motor mounts line up and all! Just need an adapter plate to keep your current transfer or transfer internals into a legacy case @el_freddo you have done this? The ej engine is your best bet to drive an L body well into the future! Giles you've inspired me to get off my arse and go finally grab my swapped 86 gl from my parents place. I'm gonna clean her up and take her to cars and coffee on Saturday, and hopefully have a look at those two parts xts. Then what I refer to as a "dirty" swap or hot swap where the engine is put into another car with wiring harness without any other care (of course a power washing is in order) it originated from a desperate friend who cracked the head on his x5 (e53 =JUNK) we went to the junkyard and found the best engine that turned and slapped her in (I use the term loosely, ejs slap in. this was a bittch) good so far! Lol I'll take a few good pics for ya
  8. Man, the price is right! That will surely save you some work! And yea I am hoping to meet this guy at cars and coffee this Saturday who has two xts he has been keeping for parts, to keep his going. Unfortunately he didn't bring his xt to the show last month seeing two in the same place? Dang! But I have his business card so if he doesn't go I'll give him a call! I got those pics for ya Giles, just need to upload realm quick
  9. What a nice dad! Does your kid have a lead foot like im assuming dad has? Its a requirement in a miata am i right? Haha no offense its a requirement for subaru driving for certain! You know the vw philosophy, no power until 3000 rpm! If you have any concerns about him ripping his new car around don't worry awd has adequate grip and he will quickly be used to driving briskly yet methodically in any situation. Spirited as some say? Judging by your other car interests im assuming that your boy been power shifting since before he could walk? Go karts perhaps? Do you race and have you let him drive your acura or mazda like he stolded it? What acura do you have? Original integra? Is yours equipped with front posi? Welcome to the forum. Spot on about these things a good forum is an invaluable resource of knowledge. All thanks to a handful of experts (read: weirdos) or known affectionately as geeks take enough time to help someone who signs up just to fix one problem and is never heard from again. I wonder sometimes how many hilariously epic threads are out there on all the forums. There should be a sticky One epic thread here, you don't even have to be a sube guy, this is so funny: I think most of the fun is seeing what other cars people dig. My first love is chevy. You see, my dad was cool as fock as well and got "us" a 77 camaro to drive and restore a father son project! My azz its been 23 years but now she has an L48 small block with m21 trans. And finally getting a proper resto very little thanks to pops! @el_freddo should like this, my camaro originally came equipped with the L22 gm 250. 4.1 inline six what you guys call the family II series. Its only known by the code here also available in 194 and 292 ci. And the first gen 230 was the family 1 in aus. I love that engine, the family II is simply the coolest name for an engine ever. The aussies are second to none for little creative details like naming. We call one the isuzu rodeo and in aus its the same thing but called the holden jackaroo? Man i want a jackaroo! Anyway you guys gonna upgrade his impreza once he shows that he can stay with the miata in the s turns? Or an old school subaru build, the engine in his impreza will drop right into a light weight 80s body i suggest the full time 4wd with diff lock if you guys come to appreciate subarus awd. Put that trans in a brat or rx. Torsen posi up front of course, in fact that should be the first thing you guys do to the new impreza! One last thing about upgrades, the exhaust. Tell your son that an expert (i use that self proclaimed title VERY loosely) on the subaru forum said its better keep her fully muffled. I was young once, in the 90s and cars have changed since then. The panty dropper part is no longer behind the cat, but in front the loud part should be a monster blow off valve. A late model impreza is supposed to blend in, the cheerleaders cant make fun of what they don't notice! Cheers man
  10. Soak it in pb blast and try some heat? I'm out of ideas except maybe start tapping this and that with a hammer or some light prying just to get the caliper to rotate up... This is gonna sound wiseass but the parking brake is typically on the right front? Would having that engaged prevent any sort of action? Good luck! Hopefully you don't need a sawzall or something silly like that
  11. Lovely ride, she is a beauty! And what the hell homes? Start a job doing BODY work and this nonsense? You seem to have a cool head about it, it'll buff out lol! Free loot basically for someone who can fix it themselves. The irony is rich here, but merely a test from the hidden 7th pliead, she can be a bit of a rascal, just bitter I guess since she gets no love and 99% of modern roo drivers have no idea what Pleiades even is. I'm assuming a 3rd gen gl door will not fit? If it does bro there is one waiting for you here in CO. Congrats on the new car and gig. Body work is incredibly lucrative and a highly demanded skill. I love body work cause its the only part of the car that is more art than science. And requires the most patience. Mechanical and electrical is all black and white no pun intended. Also you hold all the cards in a sense, the only time someone was unhappy with my work was by an ignorant bmw driver who was unhappy with the rate I was proceeding at. I politely suggested that though about 1/3 of the work is complete, pay me 1/8 of our agreed price and she's all yours! Guess who came back a month later? I completed the job for and from the good karma (I told her I'll take her x3 camping and finish mostly there lol) How long you been slinging mud? Give me some pointers man! I have been shaping metal and sanding bondo since I was a kid, but am only now getting into welding. I would love to pick your brain, particularly on the subject of metal shrinking. True zen is what I feel when I am bumping that metal so finely that I have to rest my head against it at a perpindicular angle for the last mm for perfection. Only other time is when my engine install starts and purrs proper with little smoke or nonsense (once!!) Cheers man, a deer ran into the side of this xt, so I got her on the cheap! @Kysor if that had to happen to your poor car (nickname yet?) That was actually a damn lucky hit, (why oh why not a square hit to that cool brush guard instead!?!) the structural damage appears to be minimal. I believe the trajectory may have been a result of maia smacking up her idiot sister when she saw what she was doing. Looks like you can still hop in and drive her!
  12. Hell to the yea-uh! We are just mere men incapable of performing actual miracles, but I think your xt will be to differ! I know she is feeling the love. But patience and persistence pays off!! Excellent! Those struts are gorgeous man you must be stoked! There are a handful of old school sube chicks here (do you guys across the pond still call them birds?) Have a look at the members rides subforum at your leisure. Here in the US there is sort of a feminist uprising (again, everything has its cycles no pun inteded lol) so calling someone a chick might get you smacked or start a cat fight haha! I like the term "broad" I need to look up the origin of that particular slang. Anyway Giles my friend your quest for parts is a long and hard one that you seem to be traveling along quite well. Any luck on the stereo equipment? I used to install stereos professionally I'll show you my setup my xt sounds lovely. To answer your question about my factory air conditioning on my xt, yes she is equipped, but not cold I think it simply needs a recharging. I'll probably be going a.c. (and power steering) delete once the ej22 swap starts! I started digging into the engine and found that the turbo seals are failing and letting oil into the engine under boost. 2 fouled plugs on pass (rh) side, so I'm the process of removing the probably factory vf4 in favor of a vf11 I have from a first gen legacy. Same except for a larger turbine housing, so the boost should hit earlier which would make her even more fun to drive! Who wraps these up to 7500 rpm anyway? It's fun, but that's why they are all broken! I need to get my sorry self to the junkyard, the 05+ turbo cars are finally starting to crap out on people enough to scrap them, and you know ya boy is there with a wrench! Pics to follow, it's a lovely day for wrenching here!
  13. If someone tries to lowball you, mention that 96 is arguably the best naturally aspirated ej22 made. The only one that is non interference with the adjustable lifters. And obd2. The only other obd2 is the 95 and that one has the hydraulic lash adjusters, which i prefer. But some people are weird and like a subaru that dosen't tick when cold haha! I pumped the hlas back up and she finally started ticking 10,000 miles later lol Good luck on the sale. Try here before the CL dirtbags
  14. Your junkyard has a bunch of pricks working there. You need the key to remove the cylinder on these? Dudes here are cool cause i have going for years. They know the sound of my swapped gl (loudish) and my moped! Lol but if i buy something that requires a wheelbarrow like a diff, cylinder head, or wheels they let me load up on little nonsense parts. If you don't need the key man i got you on those parts. A steering column here is $90 haha!
  15. Also an 89 gl in CO springs. Body is quite rusty. Dual range and wheels are all that is left. Or glass. There is also a loyale in auroras pull and pay if anyone missed that one in the other thread. I love what this thread has become...sorta lol can't save em all! @Jmpjose Cars and coffee in Lafayette is next Saturday I'm probably going to take my swapped gl. Bring and old school roo if you don't sleep in on Saturdays!
  16. @anothertucker Obd 2 then? I have one of each (obd1 and 2) at the moment. I understand obd1 is better if you plan on adding boost later. I think most of the money for the harness trimming is for shipping that monstosity pre trimming Some pics of my work. She purrs! Let's work something out. I got you for cheaper. I'll send you a cut harness and you can horse around with yours for a spare. Then if you have your brat a million miles from civilization (old school subaus natural habitat) and she suddenly stops getting fuel (a new school subaru behavior ) at least you can check the circuit and relay before you start smacking the fuel pump and praying (bmw driver style) and before grabbing your 10 mm to install your spare pump! I did my 86 gl ej22 swap 3 years ago, best thing i ever did (for one of these turds) And your math checks out, ej22 is greater than ea81 lol
  17. There are a few ea81 8 spokes here in denver. Bring your brat! Get a spare from the jy - pull and pay denver and lkq aurora (my closest) both have wheels that will fit the bill! Then you can go camping on the way back. Or...throw a little loot this poor boys way and a a ride to utah and you can rock on! Will your lifes work really be complete until your brat takes you camping, and finally to the big west coast subaru gathering, you two win best of show, then go camping on tge way back? Do you happen to live near a greyhound bus depot? Cheapest way to ship cause they don't deliver. Cheers man! There are slotted steelies here too.
  18. What kind of wheels are on your brat now? The best spare would be another one of those! Hopefully you have a matching set of 4 at least! I believe all the subaru 4x140 wheels will fit your brat, cause you have the ea81 years. Ea82 (85-94 wagons) cannot use ea81 wheels generally due to backspacing differences the caliper hits the wheel And keep the 4 x 140 for as long as you can, i would suggest a rear disc brake conversion first! Cheers man good luck finding what you are looking for! These parts are getting harder to find, i have the best luck cruising through junkyards. If you happen to have the white factory 13" 8 spoke or the slotted steelies for ea82 cars i might be able to come off of one.
  19. Well cool! Then the fans are off the list. Cts? Might be fooling the ecu into thinking the car is always warm enough to need the main fan. But that would cause hard starting at engine temp cold? And you tried 2 already... Might want to use mechanical gauge or laser temp reader to see if the cts is reading what the actual coolant temp is. Happy wrenching!
  20. Maybe try a power probe on the fans to see if they operate properly with a given 12v signal? Then if it were me I would grab a relay and switch and just hardwire the damn things, but I'm geto like that The ecu triggers these via the coolant temp sensor? A fancy scanner will let you trigger the fans through the eco circuit and read what else is going on. They are expensive tho, $1200 for a snap on one used! But an almost invaluable tool for any obd2 diagnosis. Beyond that perhaps find the pin on the ecu and supply that with 12v? But be careful and don't go about that willy nilly! Some circuits get 5 volts and the ecu pin for "fans" might be an out signal to the relay. Good luck man, hope it's an easy fix and be sure to keep us updated! Like GD stated this is a new one!
  21. Ok, this is coming from my vault of second gen camaro knowledge...lemme find it. Ok here it is file 3 of 4 but my fuel gauge (77 camaro) was stuck at about 1/4 turn past full no peg or it would have been so! I checked resistance and sweep of the sending unit and all good. It turned out to be a bad ground. Is the sensor bad? Any stinking boost sensor that is close to the resistance of your old one will work, yeah? Maybe just a wonky wire somewhere since it goes back to zero with no key?
  22. @Unknownjeremiah I'll go back sometime before the end of this weekend. Are you referring to the mechanical clutch fan or electric? @Jmpjose I saw that, the wheel is still sitting there. I often wonder the reason why beautiful classics wind up in the junkyard still driveable and clean. I have found many big clues but it's sad to say that I prefer to see an obvious reason, like big crash or engine fire. The dented wheel on the sube is a clue but who knows? That is one incredibly lousy reason to scrap her...need to turn the engine by hand still. I saw a 73 camaro with a burned fusible link and a 64 and a 65 Corvair that were clearly a project that someone gave up on...
  23. @tylertrend I went back and visited the old girl, and oh man, sorry to get your hopes up, but i was mistaken. It's a two spoke, but in great shape. I grabbed it anyway ha. Still interested? $40. I also got the mud flaps if anyone wants or needs those.
  24. @Scoby4wd I will certainly sell the grille to you, however carfreak85 expressed an interest for the grille before you did, so it would only be fair to see if he wants it or not. I'll let ya know! If he passes then for sure man it's yours. @tylertrend I'll go back sometime this week and have a look but the steering wheel was there last time I was, which was 10 days ago and it was indeed the 4 spoke and in good shape. It's blue I hope it's still there!
