EA82T factory "intercooler" paint scheme ?
sparkyboy replied to Steptoe's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Bumper mount intercooler yo! Or water in place of the a/c condenser. Then you can keep the cool elbow and no need for a scoop for extra sleeper mode. Mine has 4wd in black...the red 4wd is sharp! -
Careful what you wish for-89 gl 3 door
sparkyboy replied to sparkyboy's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
For sure man she's arrow straight. They should sell drivable cars if they are old enough. I don't own a 3 door so the stuff I can't use on my subes I'll sell cheap long as it don't go on eBay. Someone restoring one gets hooked up fat. Will the 4wd selector work on the 5 speed d/r? Other than that I just want the factory radio. -
@Giles Yea I am trying to solve this pleasant little mystery...heres some pics, I need to check if these fit the wagon. My xt came with these though. As far as the spoiler goes, you can't see the holes from the under side of the trunk lid. Those and the holes for the luggage bars had a slight upward indent. Stereos, the fun part! I really like the 1.5 din factory Subaru tape deck with optional auxiliary Jack. These have a 8 pin alpine style Jack for a CD changer or amp. These were in first legacy! Amazing that an aux input was available in 1990! And one Subaru sub under each front seat plus a 10 in the trunk and your xt will sound sweet! Those little bastards are cool, stereo level input only (way better than line level) and don't require the amp remote turn on from the deck, just one 12v source. They thump too. However my sunroof won't fit in the trunk with the sub. Does double din fit? I have a spare slanted bezel but it's broken and I need to check if all the pieces are there so I can glue it together. And Giles my bro...sit down for this one. There are two xt parts cars near by that I need to check out.

In a different thread someone is looking for a tail light and I jokingly commented that I hope it's not a 3 door. I was having a good day until I spotted this at the junkyard...i almost lost my lunch The dash is pristine. Blue. She's at u pull and pay Denver. Anyone out of state want anything? I only want two of those 8 spoke Ea81 4 speed d/r I grabbed what I could before they closed. So sad...let's at least strip her down to nothing on this final leg of this poor cars journey...

Nice. I hope hankook never stops making snow tires in 13"

Ford used vaccum actuated wipers well into the 80s! lol! Now the best part about post war era american cars were the 4 wheel drum brakes of course! It's funny that those cars were never considered dangerous but the little bitty corvair was a deathtrap cause politicians here couldn't wrap their heads around driving a chevy like a porsche! Anyway back to alternators...It's considered a wear part since there is typically a core charge and they will give you money back to have your old part rebuilt. Anyone here rebuilt one themselves? I understand subaru starters are easy to rebuild as well if you truly have nothing better to do ha! But a rebuild kit like $15, new alternator $100 or so? I have some old ones but i think they are still good! cheers boys

Subaru at cars and coffee May 2019
sparkyboy replied to sparkyboy's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Bennie my friend, you misread my post! Most of us subaru geeks here in CO consider the impreza or the ej cars in general the start of the new school subarus. This show moved to lafayette from nearby louisville almost two years ago due to lack of space. I have gone to every one and showed my xt twice and my swapped gl 4 times. I still haven't seen a brat, another gl or dl, no rx and no xt here! Not even a loyale! haha! The samba was here once before and that thing draws a crowd. 990 cc! -
Car batteries are the weirdest things, my factory Subaru Panasonic battery lasted 10 years! My oldest is six years old still good! Our family car, 1953 bel air has a 6 volt electrical system and the starter gets too hot for the battery to turn over on long drives. And 2 speed auto trans lol! Those use generators to maintain charge.

^^ Hooray for this little tiny piece of the internet! Epic thread. Not a lot of dudes spread the old school resto love like subaru dudes. I've seen camaro guys kick down subframes, transmissions and engines for free or a song after upgrading, but f bodies have such a huge aftermarket you can buy anything you need, interior included. Oddly enough no-one reproduces factory seat tracks for second gen so hot item and big opportunity for whoever starts making them. Yea Giles is gonna have one of the most cherry xts around judging by his work so far...I wouldn't be surprised to see a rotisserie soon! That ea82t is gonna shine like a jewel! @Giles I have been thinking of trying my hand at fiberglass molds, you never answered my question about your xts factory wing! You do have yours right? I hope so, but if not I'll make you one if I can do a good job. I also have the original luggage support bars for the trunk if you would happen to need or want those. It looks like someone hit your indents down and filled in the holes on your trunk lid, including the wing holes. Also the chrome trim on the fenders and quarters? I am missing one! Every xt I have seen doesn't have them so maybe they are from a wagon which would be SWEEEEET! they look good but if the xt never came with them then you can beat the xt that Subaru restored with that little detail for best of show at the Japan classic car show, unless my US spec left hand drive xt can make it Does yours have a front posi? I had no idea mine had one when this thread started! Unfortunately the only way I know of how to test for those would be to burn out or perhaps engage the drive wheels while both are off the ground. When I turned the front wheels by hand it acted like an open diff? Cheers boys, Subaru means unite in japanese.

Need front left blinker for 86 GL10
sparkyboy replied to DraconicTunes's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
^^ Indeed. Very sad. At least hes coming off parts, but probably wants big $. And won't sell a whole car like a lil beotch. I prefer the nutty car hoarder that starts a resto, then keeps all the parts in a bin and never finishes for decades. Or just keeps them and refuses to sell, then dies. Then has a daughter sell them for a song to make room for a horse stable. I know a guy here in CO who does the same only with second and third gen camaros and firebirds. I know that not everyone is a vintage car guy, but in my opinion treating these beautues as such requires at least tiny bit of heartlessness, and when i see them in hell slowly getting parted out im gonna act like i don't know em. Oh well. Can't save em all. I would rather see this than see one go to the crusher. -
I was the only old school Subaru again! Come help me represent in CO sube dudes! My favorite subaru: My bros e46 wagon with six speed swap, (auto only in the US) and my 85 xt turbo, ghost: And finally my favorite overall a father son project, I asked them when sandpaper will touch that perfect patina and they told me never.

Yea atf is just thick hydraulic fluid, you can put power steering fluid in there and vice versa on old cars. In a pinch the fluid you use in hydraulic jacks is good but an incredibly expensive way to get power steering to stop whining. 1 oz is nothing in 9 quarts. I think you can accidentally put 1 oz of beer in and she'll be fine. Drive her hard a bit and have a look at the dipstick, if she's low or anything else you don't like i guess its wrench on the drainplug time! Cheers man, take her to the beach soon, i have family in Manhattan beach and rolling hills estates. I would love to drive my subaru to CA, but I took my 77 Camaro there once in 2015 and got pulled over three times cause of my Colorado plates. No ticket given. I fear that that'll happen again but worse cause i have little patience for such nonsense i might get beat up and arrested. These cops have itchy trigger fingers too, they take the strap off their holsters every time once they see my german shepherd. Sorry for the rant, but is a 80s subaru wagon more "suspicious" than a muscle car? It's more "hippy" i guess so i think yes. Again, cheers boys

Truly excellent work Giles, I am thoroughly impressed! Keep it up man!

82 brat coastal Cruiser build
sparkyboy replied to Johnny 5's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Nice dude! Ive been to mexico they like toyotas and vw. Very nice grab! Plieades was extra bright for you to run into this cat on the road! Um, canada accepted and transferred ownership from the mexican title? -
Yup the old american steel are straight up tanks! I remember seeing some really old video footage of some of the earliest goofing around with automobiles. Not even black and white but that like brown before that. I remember a bunch of dudes were racing wood wheel cars like the 20s and the part that stood out to me is how easy they got stuck in the mud, and how these two fools went too fast down a hill and a tree square on. They bounced off the tree! Those early bumpers were leaf springs! It was hilarious Its too bad us built cars went to the thin japanese style steel! My xt is a super tin can only 3300 pounds! Gm always had the proper boat for the retiree or grandma. Buick roadmaster wagon with the ball on the steering wheel? I think gm had the prettiest compacts too, yes including subarus gorgeous offerings. My lightweight in the stable is my 88 audi q90. She came from the factory at 2800 lbs!! No not 3800. They used galvanized aluminum so no rust! @GeneralDisorder I remember reading some old posts while searching around, do you still have the third gen firebird? 69 gmc pickup very cool! I love all classics but muscle cars take the cake. Drive carefully everyone!

Will a loyale wagon one fit? Or is poor subie girl a sedan? Either way i got ya hopefully! This is the first time i have ever said this, but i hope you don't have a two door hatch in this situation. (Were they ever called three doors?) I feel your pain a few years ago i was sitting at a red light minding my own business in my 77 camaro and an idiot in a mercedes texting rear ended me. The impact pushed the passenger side quarter down about 1/32 inches and forward about 1/16 inch. She was arrow strait until then but about to be top notch again

Rear hatch 1991 Loyale GL compatible?
sparkyboy replied to kmpdx's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Have a look homes! A loyale (with cheese) hatch beautiful in blue. They got the metric system over there they don't know what the fuch a quarter pound is. You want the glass in case that little turd comes back with his BB gun? Ha The passenger side fender is damaged and i want the drivers fender @BEECHBM69 do you want that green or red loyale fender I posted in the jy section? If you need the drivers side more than I do I'll take the green one if it's still there...i think the red one is rusty unfortunately. That's the cool sube guy thing to do at least, i have a light blue 88 gl and need a drivers side fender...do you have time to paint one or would you rather send some loot my way for a blue? I have time to paint one, I'm hoping you don't because i really need money for my turbo audi build, my turbo xt build, my two turbo gl builds! I just bought an engine (L48) for my camaro, but think i have the 86-88 Quattro/synchro with center diff lock that came on b3 audi and vw But am trying to get a turbo ready 5 cyl like this one... You know you want the blue man! Lol -
Rear hatch 1991 Loyale GL compatible?
sparkyboy replied to kmpdx's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Is your hatch in worse shape or the difference of the price for just the glass minimal? Why not just replace the glass? But for $100 you can't go wrong and you will have a spare hatch, plus no screwing with glue or gaskets. But you will need beer or pizza or something for when you need a helper to install! -
How good is this for even suspension ?
sparkyboy replied to Steptoe's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Ok this is not a smart as s comment but is the front 0.3 degrees level as well? 10mm is so small pump the tire up more, let some out the other side? Failing that bust out with a spacer or shim for the strut mount? Getting ready for an upcoming show? cheers man -

sparkyboy replied to Vanson1200R's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Horray! Now to drive her like you stolded her She's a beauty! have you named her yet? Good job boys! I'm over here suggesting corvair parts and sh!t lol! -
@el_freddoOh wow I did not know that about the aussie wagons! Ok so we need to find out how to remove the roofs and trade haha! Naturally I speak not of cutting your beautiful car, I'm saying we each buy a beater but driveable 1st gen and then head to our respective junkyards with sawzalls and cut the roofs off those! Then I'll have a touring wagon clone and you will be the only aussie with the low roof First lemme talk to my friend in the navy see if we can arrange some discount shipping haha! Ok I got time for some craigslusting lol! And you are indeed correct the alpine sport grille is pre face lift
-
That's what it's about, my friend. @el_freddo I saw your rs liberty turbo on the picture thread before, she is absolutely gorgeous! Are you going to install one of those closed deck 2.2s? Are those the full time 4wd with diff lock? Here in the states they are called the touring wagon and sport sedan (ss) I have a soft spot for the first gen legacy - my very first subaru, rose was a 1992 legacy. She's no longer with us, but her ej22 is in my 86 gl now. I broke the trans so put her engine in my 86 gl. Yup, that's a jdm turn signal! I'll make you a deal man, get her that proper ej22t with stupid amounts of boost and you can have a piece of my wall art...You are the only dude I know with a hi roof 1st gen and I want you to have this if you like it, but I think your sube will truly be unique with the alpine sport grille. It's up to you to paint the silver part white however lol! I'll bring it to you personally, my dad gets heavily discount flights. It's cool if you wanna keep her stock looking for sleeper status. @Giles Yes those pics are of my digidash! Almost everything works except the outside air temp. And the trip computer is messed up. Have you noticed how nicely a beverage fits in the console? A 12 oz bottle of beer or 16 oz bottle of soda fits all neatly! I've been slacking on my xt resto for my camaro, but have made progress on the body work, I caught that sunroof in the nick of time! plus I am having far too much fun driving my xt! I just found out that my xt has the front posi! Post a pic of your alfa romeo!

Need advice on buying weber
sparkyboy replied to ontherun987's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I love the look of a Weber carb on a ea82, so neat and clean. All those vaccum lines and emissions crap on the Hitachi is an eyesore and a pain to work on! Buying a used one would be cheaper, they built a lot of these for upgrading subaru, datsun, ford, fiat and tons of others im sure! Not chevy though, those get Holley carbs, the easiest to work on out of few I've goofed with. I need two Holley one barrels in my life for my chevy L22 inline six. The price of a new Weber is approaching ej swap territory however. That's probably the best bang for the buck in the small world of L body subaru upgrades. If you live at high altitude be ready to change jets to compensate for less oxygen. Even if it says ready to install out of the box. But that kit looks to have everything you need to race your gl up pikes peak! Haha! Happy wrenching! -
Give me yer honest opinion here boys
sparkyboy replied to sparkyboy's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Way ahead of ya on the black wheels! Those look alright on black cars and must have chrome or bright colored trim or its disappearing wheels, not a good look! Honestly it's just semi gloss or gloss black wheels on a murdered (matte black paint or primer) slammed something. One exception for me is factory steelies painted black with dog dish hubcaps on early 70s and earlier American cars. Boats only, most muscle cars struggle with those wheels. 70 Nova? Nice! 70 chevelle? Not as much but to each his own. It's not an easy choice, the 8 spokes look so good with the white stripe on the bottom! I also have a set of factory steelies, I am almost certain the trim and hubcaps will fit. Hopefully I can try those next, they are on my red gl at the moment. I have two 13" wheel covers from a mustang II, wire spoke like Cadillac wheels! Alas, they did not fit the subaru steelies -

sparkyboy replied to Vanson1200R's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
@Vanson1200R The research is up to you my friend, you seem to be doing a fine job thus far on your Carter. But if a corvair carb will work well I have two. They are smaller than the monojet which came with the 4.1 inline six. The GM flat six was 2.3 liters, so im guessing one carb can easily make a 1.8 happy. And probably easier to find parts! Lol Who knows? might make her scream!
