  1. Caffeine and carbs? So does your car have to have a carburetor? Cars and coffee has been here a few years and is my favorite show because of the time in the morning and no trailer queens. It's funny I have shown three cars there over a couple of years and while my 77 camaro and 85 xt get lots of love, (xt got professionally photographed) my red 86 gl, the most common of the three gets a crowd because of the ej swap. I have gone literally since they moved the show to Lafayette cause it got too big in nearby Louisville, but have been the only guy with a vintage subaru. No brats, svx, nada. I think my gl is popular because of all the stupid kids in wrx's and their show takeover nonsense with the ford fiesta boys...smh
  2. Factory AC bracket im pretty sure I have one you can have for shipping and the cost of six decent beers. Let me find it but they are at junkyard here for $5.
  3. Dude! Way cool I love the subaru build sheet I have never seen one before! Where were yours located? My old Camaro came with three. One under the drivers seat, one behind the rear seat back, and one on top of the gas tank. When someone bought the car new they got a master build sheet signed by a gm employee. Cheers on the new find, you guys are gonna kick asss at the next car show! Let everyone know that the world is flat. And I know a guy - nice guy on here says he has five sets of brat jump seats he will sell! Just tell him you want two sets one for your brat and one for your Baja it'll be funny read this thread if you haven't already haha! I came so close to buying a 85 brat. I had the money and was in love. She was black and almost all there. Went on a test drive and my german shepherd Vendy hated it! She sleeps on car rides. So I reluctantly passed (my dad hassled me too about brats being stupid- two years before the $46k brat sold at auction. Last laugh is nice) and a few weeks later my beloved 85 xt turbo came into my life. Vendy loves that car the "backseat" is perfect! Lol
  4. They were few built, and yes #1 on scarcity list. But it's funny I always see them for sale here! People like to horse around with them then tire of them I guess, but there are two brats less than 2k and a 1979 dl wagon for $1000! https://westslope.craigslist.org/cto/d/montrose-1985-subaru-brat/6860665713.html The xts are impossible to find around here. I turned down an 85 brat for $800 running and driving because my german shepherd didn't like it! Lol @FerGloyale I agree with you on the matter of the brat jumpseats being about as safe as a motorcycle you face backwards on and have no control over, but a brat with jumpseats would be the best one at the drive in movies or tailgate party! Plus you have a 15 year old? Now a brat would be the coolest in high school! Ej swap would make her safer for everyday traffic! No jump seats until the ej engine and roll bar is installed would be my stipulations if my kid wanted a brat. Let's face it boys the brat is third to the el Camino/sprint for coolest car/truck and mullet style which is making a comeback, I think third gen f bodys have already bottomed out. Corvair pickup is the coolest car/truck ever made hands down haha! Yes cooler than those typ 2 vw pickups! Baja is like 10th coolest behind those vw caddys and that dodge little ram, jeep pickup, chevy luv 4x4 with Isuzu diesel...yeah I can dig a yellow Baja with surfboard and pit bull if I lived near the beach. The brat does have the lovely dual range, no awd can touch 4hi, not even bmws best 325ix. Has anyone ever driven the 86-88 audi/vw with center diff lock?
  5. Here in CO at least, if its oe its legal. I have two examples: 1953 chevy bel air. Came without seatbelts (optional in 53) cops cant do nuttin bout it. 1980s mercedes and audi wagons Rear facing jump seats! Tint the rear window dark cause an ignorant cop might think you are in the cargo area and bump you. Why are the brat jump seats so hard to find? Brats aren't particularly rare!
  6. I want an ea65! How many hp? Ea82 makes 83 so...damn but short stroke fast revving maybe? I would think 1.3 would rev to like 8k!
  7. I'll tell you exactly why, Bennie The farther you get from the mountains, the less grace and finesse is needed for offroading. A nice k5 chevy blazer (cool!) Or a diesel truck (poo) is lovely in the desert or sand dunes, or where a rwd sand rail will be loads of fun is not really a place for a lightweight subaru...clearly the superior off roader in most conditions. It's hilarious to see some fool from Texas in a lifted 2wd or diesel stuck in the snow, I've helped a few out and 4lo is extra beast with ej22 Hence, CO and WA = L body aficionados South = ford raptor or crappier, unless vintage jeep with chevy engine but no subarus
  8. And you're right, the Baja is certainly not without its charms and I'm clearly biased here. Not quite apples and oranges...apples and crab apples maybe! To the op if you are considering between the two, just drive both and see what suits your driving style. I bet the brat puts a bigger smile in your face and ej22 swap! Cheers man!
  9. Brat = sweet Baja = sucks Baja is ugly and wack with no 4wd. The brat murders the Baja in every category, except maybe drag racing with factory equipped vehicles. You can have the same number of passengers if you can find the jumpseats too. I knew a guy that had a baja and he hated that turd. Too heavy to whip on road or off. At least they didn't name that monstrosity brat, like they completely basrardized the once proud xt moniker. Get the brat, please. If you already have the money for a used Baja, buy 3 or 4 brats.
  10. I saw this one too and almost had a fire sale to finance buying that beauty! I live in CO which boulder is a huge subaru pocket. Like 5x as many subes than denver on the street. And i still haven't seen a 70s subaru in real life, not even at car shows and i go to tons of those! It seems to be feast time for classic car buyers, i saw a 53 chevy bel air 2 door post for $1000 in pueblo. POST!!! This whole time I thought the post started in 55. My 85 xt was featured in jalopnik
  11. Oh pish tosh boys! What we need here is aa couple pizzas and a case of pbr! When you build something you wanna youre bound to offend some peoples sensibilities! When i told people id be slamming my 85xt i got a "jesus no!" But people have installed small block chevys in these things and kept 4wd! Build her how ya wanna. There are areas in co where emissions are not required for registration. You should see the nonsense that goes on there! Im talking full race setups here. Diesels pollute a lot more than pcv to atmosphere. Btw fellas, i delete all my egr and pcv crap too but im too lazy to route anything, i use press on filters like on the chevys works fine and clean with brake cleaner. I keep my engine bays clean af to eat off. Hot chicks love that. @MonkeyWrencher dodges and subarus eh? You seem like my kinda guy. I was raised to love chevys and boulder, co made me a "subaru hippie guru" (someones compliment seeing my ej swap) I love chevy, subaru and bmw in that order, but dig all pre 90s. Noone made a prettier two door compact than the chevette, including gorgeous subarus. And we can debate in a seperate thread if anyone disagrees! Cheers boys! ^ My 77 camaro and 86 gl w/ej22. Cammy and the baby lion. ^ 85 xt ghost. ^ what you boys know about this? My ej22 gl in 4hi will murder a 325ix in the snow i wonder how this is? 325ix is a beast in the snow btw.
  12. Have a look at this gaudy roof rack: I once put a canoe on this thing, 115 lbs and just ratchet strapped to the bumper it came with the car and was held together with nuts and bolts. It was rather crappy but to its credit it did a fine job. So yours should be more than adequate. Cheers man! Sounds like good times ahead!
  13. @FerGloyale Right, I considered all of that and honestly to avoid altering my xt, I would save 4wd for autocross or rainy days and crawl underneath and pull the lever. I'll keep her the right way then! So school me on the front posi, I understand the 05 and 06 wrx 5 speed front posi fits the d/r? Also the first gen legacy ss and touring wagon fits? But I can buy new for $300 so would it be best to leave the rear open? And which type is the rock crawler type where you get traction with the other tire in the air (viscous?) and then the limited slip (cone type? Or clutch pack?) for street use? All I know about em is that the street kind is useless off road! I just need to get my two wheel burnout action and steering wheel craziness on a gravel roads Thanks for your input boys, cheers Anyone here build late 80s audis?
  14. What the hell? ... Ummm Cool! There is a guy shoehorning a tt Ls into an xt So rock on man! Clearly the car will be slammed to make America scrape again? Where are you located btw? After seven I'd be wanting to do something different, no ol' reliable ej22? Cheers man, do a build thread!
  15. So I'm trying to decide which way to go on my transmissions... I have the dual range in my 88 gl and the single range (push button) in my 85 xt. I am thinking of switching them. Only because I am gonna give my 88 to a friend and want to keep a dual range in case I break one. (I have the dual in my 86 gl w/ ej22) I assume they are the same externally. Is either beefier? I plan on slamming my xt so mostly 2wd unless I can find a posi Can someone go into detail on how to install the dual range internals into the legacy 5 speed case? I do plan on putting an ej22 into my xt soon...
  16. Oh that's quite alright, I have had some rather epic thread jacks here in the past! Fun stuff I have never seen any of those sport models
  17. I redrilled the flywheel myself. It took a couple of hours and $20 in nice bits, but just use the ej flywheel as a template and elongate the holes into an oval shape! Sjrlifts adapter plate is worth every penny. Have fun! Your brats gonna smash now!
  18. I can only speak for the 86 HVAC system, which is vacuum actuated... but I know which wires to pull. The blend door is on the drivers side right under the stereo console. I have a Chilton manual for that year, you need me to take a look?
  19. Ok, i put the part number into the Subaru website, its for the emblem and shows both styles of grilles. It also mentions an alpine sport model. The jdm first gen leggo had the clear turn signal lenses, right? This pic is from Wikipedia
  20. I found a part number on the back of the emblem, but nothing comes up! I'll find that pic of the black one, it looked like a media or brochure pic.. Ive seen the three bar one, that one is pretty dope too!
  21. I have never seen this diamond pattern. I found this at a junkyard on a full time 4wd legacy wagon But searching google, I have only seen this one in black, not on the ss or touring wagon, even jdm Anyone know? It's cool as hell!
  22. Do carby subes have in tank filter (sock)? I am only aware of the in line filter in front of the tank. My camaro sucked the sock into the fuel line and luckily had a gas can and a 32 oz Gatorade bottle. I pumped gas back through the line to unclog her later. If you take the gas cap off, compressed air should have you freed up. Should be an easy fix, happy wrenching!
  23. Hooray for air shocks! Wow man solid work! That's elbow deep with the elbow grease! To answer your question, no unfortunately ghost is still languishing at my parents but I'll get you those pics of the inside! I need to see her and she is a perfect distance to walk my dog on this beautiful Colorado day! She's coming out soon, after about 9 months, poor girl! She's with the family project, a beautiful 53 bel air...been back there 17 years!! It makes me mad I've been ready to restore her, she runs and drives! my dad is retiring soon and my bro is at a good place with his projects so what's up? @Giles would you mind getting a close up pic of your trunk lid? I am curious if i have to slightly flatten the holes for the luggage bars...would you be interested in those? Where is your spoiler? If you 3d print your front emblem, maybe I can try my hand at fiberglass molding my spoiler for you! I hope its a moot point cause you have the factory one! Cheers mate keep up the good work! 53 Chevrolet bel air "Belle" All original 235 inline six, and powerglide trans (2 speed auto) She did not come with the optional 12 volt electrical system or seat belts!
