  1. @el_freddo You posted in this thread! Member? You member Yea the one that followed me home! She's getting some love, hgs and timing crapola while my lovely swapped 86, 85 xt, camaro and bel air (family project, but I've F'n BEEN ready!) Lol! Luckily it snowed lately and I've not much better to do I was trying to match my bros arty bmw s52 swap pic since i was slacking this was at the same time as the ej22 swap into my red gl. The art was done by an old friend. The turbo is a spare for my xt but period correct I guess, vf4 Ideally I would like to put the xts ea82t into the 88 gl and put an ej22 in my xt
  2. Ummm....no Just kidding yea CL I just select all surrounding areas from Denver but albequrque, Santa fe/taos, Farmington and salt lake city is a good spot, but Nebraska and Kansas has a lot of cool stuff. Hitch a car dolly to...um...see why your car needs a name? Ask your mom, girlfriend or baby momma momma or whatever to name her! But sube demand tends to be low, warm climate and dry people like trucks for off road cause it's all brute force, not much finesse or grace is required like mountain off roading, where a little gl can and has destroyed a lifted diesel f250 and made it miles farther. I helped him dig out of the snow, took 3 hours That's why CO and WA are Subaru havens, I need to bring my gl to WA. I have never been and have a friend I haven't seen in 16 years lives there.
  3. @Giles That rust is quite minimal. The holes are tiny, I think that cover is one little flaw in a real life video game alien car. The xt has only two flares in the front and is still beautiful! Lol I just reread this thread and realized that you might not have seen my xt my friend! Her name is ghost, have you named yours?
  4. Haha! You guys are awesome! I should stop buying or sell something, but @Scoby4wd have you looked into the 4 corners area? I hope we don't create another monster here @el_freddo! And by the way I've posted pics of my camaro here, the more the merrier I think! And the new guys won't have to search the pics forum lol! There are lots of old subes and bmws mostly rust free, and dirt cheap. I have recently seen a couple of two door hatches, and a wagon that I would take quick. Also an e28 and 633c. The local sube market here is odd, but the college kid who worked his way through school will sell his GL or first gen leggo for $500 to buy a wrx to be like his friend whose parents paid for school. Cheap brats too. I almost got an 88 for $800 last summer! Then on the other side of the coin are the hippie ladies who think their 250,000 mile loyale is worth $2500 cause it's clean...and probably get $2000! But man in boulder there are tons of Subarus, almost every other car seems like at times! In the junkyards here it is a phase one ej feast, but i sh!t you not, there are more Porsches than L body subarus. I'll say this, the ej swapped L body is a beast at stoplight to stoplight racing
  5. Wow @Giles !!! She is a true beauty! That is one of the cleanest xts I have seen as far as starting a resto project...i am drooling at that rhd model!!! No digidash?!? Bro! Don't worry dude you will find one. But you have the ALWAYS missing front square emblem!! That is one thing that can't be found. I'm jealous. Do you have the rear spoiler and luggage pieces? I have the luggage pieces somewhere that I don't think I'll be reinstalling...lemme know if you want or need them, I'm not coming off that spoiler tho! Anyway I'll cut you a deal, mate. Since my xt is also the factory light blue if I can restore mine as nice as yours, how about we take our xts (with our hot turbo ej engines, front posis, and low settings on our coilovers) to Japan for an epic road trip...we'll have our boys send our ea82t engines and air suspension to Japan in crates so we can win best of show there, and all the autocross events on the way. We'll roshambeau for it if a disagreement comes up, but i want to display my ej on a stand and the ea82t in the engine bay, but the other should be vice versa. Then when it's time to go home I'll take the rhd back to CO and you take the lhd one back to Wales... Five years time? We can start the documentary now. Bushings for the gl should work, right? They're the same suspension basically. And standard 80 or 85 weight gear oil is what I use in the rear. No problems for me in that regard.
  6. Let us know how it goes! Blaze that trail literally and figuratively! For some goofy reason I love the 4x140 stuff, the obscurity level is just right where one isn't stuck without any options, but with enough searching and hoping something truly unique and beautiful can be found, like the enkeis or ssr formula mesh. Subaru had some dope 4x140 alloys back in the day...
  7. Oh man I'm on pins and needles to see! You must be thrilled! One trick to post pics here that works well for me is if you are on Facebook to take your large image and post it there, even just to yourself. Then save that image to your or computer and the file will be resized much smaller. Then just choose files to attach at the bottom of a new reply. Cheers mate, get out your 12, 14, and 17mm wrenches and sockets!
  8. Awesome man! Haha plieades hooks another one, those seven sisters sure have a way about them! I think the solar radiation from that constellation scrambles the brainwaves slightly or something lol! Are you going to check out a loyale sedan or wagon? Good luck man and i hope she's as tasty as your 86! Best thing about these cars is that the parts to keep them going just about grow on trees in the form of the ej engine. @el_freddo I know my friend, anyone who spends about 5 minutes in the old gen forums will certainly get plenty of looks at my piles lol! Hopefully an eye full and not an eye sore! I can't help it sometimes but these little.boxes are simply too cool and i love it when someone just starts to dig them...it was here where I first became aware of the ej swap! Cheers boys
  9. That's cool as hell man, was that car pulled behind an rv or something? Those 84k miles treated her nice. I'm a sentimental nerd and been hoarding chevys and subarus. I have always wanted a two door hatch. My 86 gl with ej22, the baby lion in boulder co with a sweet 85 dl My 85 xt turbo, ghost And my 88 gl, Skye
  10. Oh yeah bro, she's a beauty! Squeaky clean! How many miles and have you named her yet? Cheers man and welcome to the forum. Happy wrenching!
  11. Finding which circuit is causing the slow draw shouldn't be too difficult, set your multimeter to amps and check amp draw at the battery terminals. It should be near zero. If not, start pulling out fuses one by one until the reading drops to zero. Then you can go from there to fix it. The clicking sound under the seat? Maybe a faulty seat warmer? And yea check for bombs and cia tracking devices
  12. Make sure you leave enough in the budget to slam her extra low, and a fresh paint job...although a little patina goes a long way, yours is about perfect. Tinted windows. Then monster turbo. Keep the flat hood and squeeze a bumper mount intercooler in there. And a set of those formula mesh basket weaves...on the standard non rx coupe? Sick made! What's her name? My 86 gl with ej22 is the baby lion and my 85 xt turbo, ghost that I am going to slam to lowlife level, like this guy...
  13. I have swapped an older ej22 into an L body, it's pretty straightforward. Starting in 2007, at least in the US they started the immobilizer thing, so you need the harness, ecu and the manifold from the same car is what someone told me at the junkyard. Grab the driveline stuff from the trans back for awd, a custom length driveshaft will likely be needed. Make sure to get the hubs and note spline count, since you will also be five lug swapping the front as well. For old school dual range you need the trans and rear pumpkin with axles and hubs to match? Plus an adapter plate if installing an ej engine. It seems easy enough to me, but someone with more experience in the 2wd to 4wd subject can add his two cents! If it were me, I would find a cheap ej and not worry about the 4wd part for now. That donor impreza you mention for all the awd stuff will be much cheaper with a blown engine! Happy wrenching! Some five lug swap action here:
  14. All i can say is... Hell YEAH! And take lots of pics!
  15. Wow @Giles! Good work tracking down hard to find parts! Oh come on, can anyone really fall out of love with the xt? Auto box is no biggie, that's how Pleiades made her! Just don't break it! Correct me if i am wrong here boys, but won't any ea82 five speed swap right over? Us American sube geeks refer to them as simply the single range or push button, and dual range. With cable clutches and the same bellhousing, I would assume that the xt is one of the easier Manny swaps, I think finding the factory shifter would be the biggest challenge. I thought as long as the gear ratios match for the trans and rear diff (3.9 I believe on the push button trans?) everything would work nicely...the solenoid and all the other nonsense can be worked out later... Anyway, if i ever see an xt in the junkyard, all you'll see is a Tasmanian devil style whilwind, then a stripped xt. You fellas got dibs on parts! The xt is really an odd duck, no dual range 4wd, or rear post for the turbo model? Wtf!
  16. @Unknownjeremiah It seems to me that you like to tinker with things, so: I would order a rebuild kit for your carb first of all, you have the Hitachi two barrel? I barely remember as a kid needing to pour gas into the float to get her to start on my mom's old ea81, but that seemed to be the only problem... I have rebuilt my camaros carb and it was fun, just take care and don't lose little parts! The only reason I had to rebuild my Rochester is because of the ethanol in the fuel, in 1970 the carb had a rubber umbrella valve that was rubber and deteriorating, until it stopped working and overflowed the bowl. The kit should cost around $30, or you can bite the bullet and do the Weber upgrade. Around $300 and worth every penny as I understand. Americans simply made better carbs than japan, datsun guys love the Weber too. I'm glad you're open to the ej swap, if the Weber swap is biting the bullet, ej22 swap is like biting the shotgun shell! Cheers boys!
  17. Please paint those 8 spokes a proper white! Sweet ride! I have only seen a handful of two doors! Cheers man! I have an xt so i am also a two door subaru owner lol I dream of the two door hatch with the single round headlight. What's her name? And she's giving you troubles already? Ej22 swap time! Then you will be reliable and not slow. This is the baby lion, my 86 gl with ej22. Next to a two door dl in boulder, co. ^^ White 8 spokes are the cherry on top of L body Subarus! Happy wrenching, have fun with your new subaru!
  18. I'm sorry to hear that bro! And yes file a police report, and talk to your insurance as to how you can get paid for some other idiot... Could have been worse bro, at least it's not on the pillar. You can hammer dolly that easy, once you have your check! And i personally feel your pain, my camaro was arrow straight until some fool in a Mercedes decided texting was more important than driving safely. I did get an insurance check luckily, I'm installing a tail panel soon. I am a self taught backyard body man, I am still learning how to weld on sheet metal...but look closely at my xt on the back of the flatbed, a deer ran into her! What do you think of my work? That was a big asss dent! I have a harbor freight stud welder and a harbor freight hammer and dolly set. I have two nice snap on dollys that belonged to my grandpa. And funnything...there is a loyale sedan in the junkyard. Want a quarter or patch panel?
  19. @carfreak85 Oh i have plenty of cars that ride nicely! The factory gl ride height is perfect. I have a 2" lift on one, and factory on the other and i prefer factory. And thanks for all the L body lowering tips, the only experience I have lowering something is my camaro, and the 2" drop leaves the lower a arm parallel to the ground which is ideal for that car. Any more spring drop and you need to get drop spindles. The lowering springs are made by Detroit speed and engineering... I'll start with an inch all around and see what's up, I have seen mixed reviews on the rear strut hat flip trick on the xt...i gotta go get her and a big toolbox from my parents so i can back up all my big talk. I just feel this uncontrollable urge to ej swap this thing, keep the single range and 4x140s and basically have a go kart with a huge sunroof! Cheers boys, I'll do her right when i can afford, or this independent subaru/bmw shop I know of wants to sponsor me, my buddy got some of his brz suspension and used slicks as finders fees for a toyota/Subaru tuning shop, he just had to supply the wheels. A lot of business is drummed up at car shows and part of the deal was to pass business cards out...they do machine work too! I know you lurk without signing in, Jim...I would love to tell everyone how awesome p*****n tuning is, in boulder, co home of the rich wrx boy racer...I know you are turboing Justin's pile too, I did the trans on that car last year! And woody...i seen the Acura bro, kudos! i got a proper set of street tires for my swapped gl, remember her? Bloodbath on diagonal but that's straight line, so lemme take the lift off if you wanna do Morrison to evergreen or Estes to loveland...unmarked cops in the canyon... but I'll dirty swap my xt from my gl and at the airport autocross I'll take her out on whatever suspension she has. good times, how lucky we are to have such nonsense toys and behave like kids playing real life video games? I just need that lsd in my life, and whadda youse fellas know about the front lsds?
  20. Ok cool! If you are happy with a cheap, effective way to lower safely I'm all ears... I have seen the results from cutting two and a half coils, and using those 1" rubber spacers between coils, and she sits perfect...guy was very pleased with the handling after cutting...ford tempo springs work on the gl, yeah? Ride quality is of little concern, but i do want to keep the control arms parallel to the ground as best as I can... How much were the bc coilovers? I understand cheap honda ones work as well? I just heated some 325ix springs and got perfect results...but the xt has a lot farther to drop...i figure I can buy some new or used tempo springs and cut until happy, then order a proper spring of the same height.
  21. That's funny, my first ej swap was for an ex girlfriend! But when it came time for her to think about ej swap life without me, she got scared when superrupair in boulder, co- yeah naming names punks! Said they don't mess with swapped L bodies cause they couldn't find the diagnostic port...its under the hood, a pinout will tell you which wire to trace! Smh...pretty unique plug too...but I digress. She bought a bugeye legacy... I swooped in with the jack move for a fair price while i grabbed my xt! She should have listened to what I know of the ej22 engine, but she wasn't interested...i offered to just help her with the car and she got offended... She still has my repair manuals! Lol good times
  22. @Giles You try this guy yet? Haha! https://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/topic/168553-stash-of-1st-2nd-and-3rd-gen-old-school-parts/ Those engineering drawings are the sh!t huh? I am going to vistaprint a large one, hopefully comes out good, photos do!
  23. @Giles The xt is the same suspension setup as the gl of the same era... As far as the five lug, the hot swap was at one point (have a seat for this one) cannibalising an 88-91 xt6 for the five lug and rear disk...no longer so for various reasons Here is a very good write up using a hodgepodge of legacy and forester parts: https://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/topic/168379-writeupthread-loyale-rs-ej-5-lug-hub-fabrication-w-cheap-coilovers/ A very interesting read, however... Let me say this about our setups, I am referring to us 4x140 guys with rear disks...they are fairly common still, they came on third gen gl-10s (turbo) and loyale turbo (the gl10s had posi rear diffs, you guys probably know them as limited slip, so grab that if you see it) The xt I know for certain was the only one to come with naturally aspirated and rear disks? Single range 4wd, yeah? Maybe the rx came like that, I dunno. Anyway the 4x140 w/ rear disk is far too cool to swap, especially on an xt. gl or brat? Let's go, but i would keep the 4x140 on an rx too. The xt drops a serious anchor, she's my best braking car! I also drive lots of e30 and e34 bmws, and a 77 camaro for comparison sake. I didn't know the legacy had the air ride too! Is that ss model maybe? Cool! Man, kudos on all this searching, but in your quest to keep your xt original, it might be time to find a fabricator and/or engineer. It's not like this is a torsion bar suspension, these are struts for God's sake! Why couldn't someone take airbags meant for say, a Lexus or bmw and start cutting, welding, and hitting crap with a hammer until it fits? Are there blank ones to order like wheels and then customize to fit? Not to lead you down more rabbit holes, but the mid 80s Subarus used some parts with nissan, though I am only aware of engine parts such as ignition modules and injectors and what not...and I am not sure how that will help anyway, did the maxima maybe have air suspension? Finally, here is my plan for my xt. Might wanna sit down again... Cutting the springs and/or heating them to slam her lower than low, right off the bump stops. With a set of 85 premier alloys she's gonna sweet, and lower than my camaro, (2" drop, scrapes everthing!) Cheers man, let's see some pics!
