d/r trans. ratio question
chazmataz replied to chazmataz's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
thanks. i just had to replace my d/r trnas with one from a wrecking yard and i was just curious if there was a way to check without tearing it apart, such as markins, tags or something else. can't quite tell if it is the same by driving it. -
okay i don't know if this deserves a separate thread or not but can you break something in the transmission from driving around with a welded diff? 2 days after driving around with my welded diff. we went mudding and after that i had a bad vibration that soon ( a day or two) it turned into a crunching sound and the vibration got worst drove it about 2 more days then parked it. was affraid of being stranded.

from my understanding there are 2 different ratios for the low range in dual range transmission. so my question is: is there a way to tell from the outside what ratio the transmission has (i.e. outside markings or tags)?

well snowman, its a suspension lift that me and a couple of guys from work came up with so my bigger tires would fit better so they wouldn't hit the fenders anymore when i hit bumps to go 4 wheeling one weekend. its temporary until i make something better and permenant however it seams to be pretty strong i haven't broke anything yet, except my transmission after i welded the rear end up and went and played in the mud. anyway, i used rancho shock mount bushing for spacers on the front after i knocked out the old strut mount studs and drilled a bigger hole and ran grade 8 bolts all the way through to the body and i adjusted the bottom spring seat all the way up then i sloted the strut towers so that i could align it to stock alignment specs. on the rear i used air bag brackets bolted to the inner fender well where the strut mounts and bolted the struts to the brackets, which was a spacer for the back struts. i have 11 1/4" ground clearance at y-pipe where the 2 header pipes connect, so i have figured that i have around 5-6" of lift from stock which includes the tires. thanks for asking, chaz

hello, i only have one suby at this time actively looking for another. the specs for my suby wagon are in my signature. i'm not sure how much of a lift i have but i have gained 5" to 6" from the stock height. not a member of any club yet, but i go wheeling with friends from work or alone. there should be a pic in my signature but i will post one just in case. i have other pics in my gallery. http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/photos/showgallery.php?cat=500&ppuser=9402 chaz

i know this thread is a little old but i'm hoping someone might see this and reply to my question. can driving around everday with a welded diff damage/break something in the transmission/transaxle? my reason for saking is that 2 days after having my diff welded i went out in the mud wheeling and afterwards i got a really bad vibration that got worse and is under accelaration and is now doing a crunching sound when turning and driving straight which comes and goes and is inside the transmission housing. when you are on flatland and at a steady speed it feels normal. now i have checked the cv joints and the wheel bearings and they are good, the only problem i see is the splined stub shafts at the inner cv joint has some play but they have had some for a while but this is much worse and happened in about a 30 minute time frame. it feels like a wheel is coming off or you are driving with a flat tire. so are you saying that cvj or the axle shaft itself will break? please help me understand what this and what might have caused it, if someone can, thanks.

dude, that looks awesome:D . i think you should leave the wheels gold, but they would look good black, too.

finally made it there, this was so fun. thought we would get stuck a couple of time but no worries, just bogged down a little. got into some big ruts couldn't get out of them so we had to just stay in them and ride it out. there is mud all over, under and inside the engine compartment. this place rocks, will be going back again soon. thanks for the info. -
Best All-Round Tires for EA82
chazmataz replied to 85Sub4WD's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
just adding my 2 cents worth, i'd go with the toyo z800 ultras. i've had them on my 86 suby for around 6 years and never had a traction problem or wear problem they handle nice too, dry, wet, snow and not to bad in ice as long as you drive carfully. i might add siping to them too. -
Uncorrectable Front End Vibration
chazmataz replied to Syrinx's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
have you checked your inner cv joints to see if you have movement up and down at the transaxle, you could have bearing failure in your transaxle at the driveshaft. -
Alignment go bad!
chazmataz replied to Rolloverbratboy's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
you don't need to take the rack out to do inner tie rods, you only have to take the outer off completely and then you can replace the inners but you do need a special tool to remove the inners. a thrust angle alignment is a standard alignment for all cars unless you need a 4 wheel alignment which older subies don't need. i wouldn't get new tires unless your old ones are almost bald or wearing funny. i would recommend siping though that will give you better traction in the rain but if you drive on alot of gravel road i wouldn't recommend it, all snow tires come with lots of siping already -
Alignment & Camber Question
chazmataz replied to MSSLGECKO's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
if you are looking at the front of your car there should be a slight hind of the top of your tires leaning out, this is called possitive camber subaru's have this. similar to what the old vw bugs have when they had big tires put on for bajaing only not as savere. -
