My Brat, aparently has suddenly developed so much blowby in the oil that it now runs the oil pan down by 3 quarts in the course of 400 miles.... This, as far as I know, is not normal behavor, as it used to never lose any oil, at all until it was oil change time. But 2 months back, it started burning oil badily, it's not leaking oil anyware, no puddles under the car, but it's losing a quart of oil per tank of gas now. I'm asuming the rings in the moter have expired and gone to the other side at this point. Time for an engine rebuild!

It's just north of 196th in Lynnwood on Highway 99, on the west side of the highway.
-
it was a 2wd? ok, I didn't pay enough attention to it, only that it was a turbo and had rear disc brakes. I did notice there was a lot of ea81's and ea82s in there right now.

hey, even though I talked to ya on the phone and told ya already, happy b-day, Get your self an internet connection of some sort, even if it's dialup, later.

Oh yeah, I've got everything I need to put the brat back to it's interiors orginal color except floor carpet and seats. I Can find blue carpet anyware so I wasn't worried about that, just seats. I also want to get the body done on that poor car because it's a horrible eyesore right now... But I don't know how to get it done right and affordable.

I think I know the person who put the lifted GEN I brat in pap lol. It' was blue right? with cut up fenders? and a topper? Anyway. Yeah I scored that one day 2 years ago when I got all the nice interior parts for my brat, off of a hatch back. I want to find blue seats that nice though, haven't had any luck with that.

Hey hey, headgasket times...
Mr. Carb replied to Mr. Carb's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Yeah, I might have said this before, but I'm on a pretty tight budget so it's only getting replaced if it looks like it's been leaking or about to leak. Really I'm in a race to get the car passed through emissions and licensed. -

Yeah, I'd love to put in a manual and get rid of that automatic but right now I'm just focused on getting the car running and through emissions. -

Ok, yeah, I plan to take my time. It is hydrolic lifters wich is nice. The turbo shouldn't give me any trouble, I've already swapped it out once recently and the car has maybe been driven 50 miles sense the replacement. I've gotta figure out how to deal with the automatic on the back of it as well, I'm thinking about just unbolting the torque converter from the flywheel and leaving it on the tranny side. -

hmmm. ok. Sounds good to me. I'm going to pull the engine out and inspect it while I'm doing the headgaskets, get anything else taken care of too if it needs to be done while the engine is out. -
I'm going to be doing my very first headgasket replacement. Never done it before, I'm a little nervous, but I think I can. Should I be looking out for anything while I do this? besides head cracks. This is an ea81 turbo engine. Are the headgaskets diffrent from none turbo ea81's? Sorry I haven't been on here in a while, working alot lately.

Lynnwood PAP: Turbo Sedan
Mr. Carb replied to Mr. Carb's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Ah Crap! Sorry I completly spaced! the one with good axles and all that in the second paragraph, is about a white 83 ea81 wagon I took parts off of at PAP. But the ea82 sedan is a turbo with rear discs. -
Theres an ea82 4wd turbo sedan with rear discs still on it at the lynnwood PAP if anyone's lookin for a set of rear disc breaks for a conversion. Saw it today while I was checking out the white 83 wagon, hoping it had good seats. Has 2 good axles, no ripped boots. The moter looks like it runs, I suspect it leaked though, I couldn't find anything physically wrong with the car. It looked like from the shop reciept that they were taking good care of it until something made them give up, maybe a tranny went? it has a 4spd D/R in it. Anyway, just giving everyone the update as of this morning.

DOH! turbo coup problems... again.... -_-
Mr. Carb replied to Mr. Carb's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Yeah, I was thinking, wishfully, that the turbo might have bad bearing seals and it might be mixing there, but, wich is more likily if the upper coolant hose bursted and the car lost all it's coolant? -
the accelerator pump in my carbrator died, it's a 2bbl hatachi, what usallaly kills them, and are they pretty much, rebuild the carb to fix?

I got the new tranny in the brat last weekend... it runs and drive now, transmission works good, it has a loud whine in 4th gear though, doesn't whine in any other gear, not even reverse. I thought that was kind of a rare one, it's full on gear oil, so I'm hoping time will quiet it. without it breaking. Looks like I have to get a new wheel bearing, and cv axle for my driver's side though, the center nut threads are cross threaded aparently on this dealership axle my friend sold me... I descovered this when it kept comming lose, and when I rethreaded it, it wouldn't go on streight at all. So the hub comes lose every week. This car is really being a money sucker right now. Oh well. Anyone have any ideas of a whine in 4th gear is normal? if it is, I'll ignore it.

yeah, I took alook at that guy too, the thing is, all my lights, and brake lights work. if that switch was bad, the brake lights wouldn't work. I'm thinking either the sensor is bad, or, it's being told the brake lights are on when they're really off, so it thinks they're out, because they're not on, I'm trying to figure out where the sensor is... Does anyone know where the sensor is?
-
lol, just toped off the brake fluid 2 days ago, cause the brake fluid light was on....

I never installed the radio, the acc power comes from the orginal acc power that was there for the orginal subaru radio, I have made no changes to my wireing harness at all. It's just decided it's going to stay on now, it sometimes, will turn off when I hit the breaks, and stay off until I release them again, sometimes... but most of the time it's just stuck on no matter what, and it's always On, when I'm not hitting the breaks. what I want to know is, where IS the module that kicks on that light, and what could cause it to fail like this...
-
in my 84 brat, wich is the none ecu model, decided the stop lamp warning light was gonna come on, and stay on. None of the lights are burnt out, Where and what could cause this to suddenly happen randomly? (I was working on putting in a radio when it decided to do this) If anyone has any ideas, let me know, thanks.

1 and 3 not firing? (Now with idling goodness!)
Mr. Carb replied to singletrack's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I'd get a can of carb cleaner out, and spray around that side of the intake ports, and see if one of the intake gaskets, (if more than one) has a vacume leak, the carb cleaner will make the engine either idle faster, or smoother... if theres a leak on the gasket. My brat's first emissions attempt failed because it had a bad intake gasket on the driver's side. and it idled real rough. It was getting to much air on that side to burn the fuel in cylenders 2 and 4 at idle. -
Hi I'm new---'84 Brat and '01 Outback
Mr. Carb replied to wendybradley's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Brat's or atleast my brat, makes alot of road noise because it's high off the ground, compared to most cars, and newer subaru's. Though, it made alot more noise when it had big exhaust leaks. -
