  1. Dude, it looks almost like my brat! a bit mangled though... nothing but a little bit of hammering can't fix. and maybe some bondo, and paint.
  2. I guess intake manofold gaskets would help..... now it runs smoother than most subarus I hear driving on the road today.
  3. yeah, but it's still running to rich and failing, Austin has access to a sniffer at his work. We're gonna try diffrent carbrators today until we find one that works... Turnes out the other Night Ed that the egr valve, unlike what austin thought, was stuck open instead of closed, so theres this half inch vacume leak lol! We never noticed it until finally he thought of covering it just for the hell of it, and like magic, the car idled normally. So now to find a good carbrator out of the 20 in his shed lol, wish us luck today.
  4. Ok, well I let austin attack it, we removed all the emissions compononts, and he ignored the egr valve, cause he told me usallaly they're stuck closed. So we go to fire it up, and it won't idle, runs at 2,500rpms or higher just fine, but any lower and it died out. after swaping carbrators on it 3 times, we realised that the egr valve was actually stuck open, not closed, providing a major vacume leak! austin covered it and like magic the engine ran normally. So now it's de-emissioned, running smooth, and ready to be tested to see if it fails or passes:clap: I'm replacing the distrubuter with one that doesn't have massive shaft play, hoping that helps, and the only other thing it needs is a return spring for the carbrator. So I thought I'd share the news of today's adventures. It's amazing what obvious things pass the eye. it just needs some slight tuning wich will be done tomarrow, and I should be set. The passenger side cv outer joint however is making all sorts of noises on me when I turn, so it's time to replace that.
  5. yeah, well it's obnoxious, I've replaced the air filter, cap and rooter, and spark plugs and spark plug wires, patched all the vacume leaks, and now it's failing emissions like it's running just slightly rich.... Before I did all that, it failed only the hydrocarbons at idle.... now it fails everything but the hydrocarbons at cruise rpm... So, I'm trying to figure out how I can easily get it to pass, it runs nice and everything, sounds good, runs smooth, doesn't misfire... it has a little bit of hessitation though if it's idling, and you stomp on the gas pedal... I don't know if that has anything to do with it. But I want it to pass lol. I'm tempted to just replace the whole intake system with a de-emissioned one and then send it through emissions.
  6. well they're behind a post thats blocking access to them intentionally so people like me can't easily modify it to pass emissions, but theres 2 screws back there, not one. and the little metal sleave can easily be drilled out. So, I'm wondering wich one of the two it is, it's one above the other, right on the front of the carbrator, at it's base. I don't have a picture yet to show, but I'll try to snap one tomarrow early morning.
  7. According to Austin, I have a hatachi carbrator, or a 4 bolt carter-webber, anyway theres adjusment screws at the base front center of it, blocked with a cotter pin, and it's believed to be the mixture adjuster screws behind that, theres 2 of them though, one above the other, anyone know what it is I'm talking about, I'm trying to get this thing leaned out a little so it passes emissions, it's just running slightly to rich. And I want to get it done tomarrow morning if I can, sooner the better. Thanks for any information.
  8. I'm curious to know too, got one sitting at his house with my name on it and I'm thinking about building it up a little better than stock... ie, stronger valve springs and I guess reinforced push rods.
  9. Have a quick question, Need an emissions expert probably for this one, but My subaru brat is currently powered by one of em carter-webber carbs that everyone hates... Are thoes carbrators adjustable in the air/fuel mixture? From the looks of the results it's running just a tad rich, the car has a new air filter, cap, rooter, spark plugs, and spark plug wires, tuned to 8 degress btdc. purrs like a kitten, but here are the following results it gets from emissions testing. Cruis RPM is 2,500 and the idle rpm is something like 950, a little high I guess, but it wasn't over the limit. Heres how it did. Hydrocarbons, limit at cruis or idle is 220ppm at idle it failed at 226ppm, at cruise it passed at 64ppm. CO % limit is 1.2 at idle, it was 2.19, at cruise it was 1.72. so obviously it failed the co % CO+CO2 % minimum at cruise is 6, it passed at 15.62 with an "N/A" Idle, minumum is 6, it was 15.29. O2 % was 0.7 at cruise, no limit, and 1.32 at idle, no limit. so thats the results, and it failed the CO % at idle and cruise and it failed hydro carbons or (HC) at idle... first time I tested it with all the vacume leaks, it ONLY failed the hydrocarbons at idle, but it was at a very high rate, at idle it was about 1024ppm and the limit like I said earlier, is 220ppm. Anyway any help would be great, if all else fails, I'm gonna just take off the intake manofold, put on a hatachi carb and intake, and remove all the emissions garbage, and according to Austin, it'll pass that way. Anyway any info regards to what Might be wrong and why it's failing the way it is, and how it can be fixed other than replacing the top half would be much apreciated, thanks everyone!
  10. Well, it failed again... this thing is turning into such a waste of money! Now, it fails everything, except the cruis hydrocarbons. everything else it fails on. and to top that off, the moter is about to throw a rod now. So I guess I'm looking for a working ea81 engine that isn't gonna run me up to 180 bucks.
  11. roll bar looks good! I wish I could figure out a way to make one fit under the high top camper, so people could sit in the jump seats without banging their heads, but as it is, the high topper is too low for that. I was thinking about making a removable mount for a roll bar, so I could mount it when I don't have the topper on.
  12. Oh you bet I did, that was the problem, it didn't run rough at an idle til I ran it on the freeway and got it real warm.... but yeah, all thoes big vacume leaks getting fixed, also fixed the engine problem, it still had slight fireing problems, so I bought a new air filter, cap, rooter, spark plugs, and spark plug wires, that damn thing runs so smooth now, it's incredible. I've never seen it run this good, I'm pretty sure it'll pass now. spent to much though, I can't afford to license it yet cause I got billed from my insurance twice in the same week!
  13. hmm, well I'm not sure it's an issue anymore, after looking through the test results, it shows that the car was actually running to lean and not to rich... it runs fine at above idle, but when it idles it was leaned out horribly and mis fireing alot, fixing all the vacume leaks smoothed it out alot, but it still has some slight misfires just barely. I'm wonding if just the 3 huge vacume leaks was enough to throw the hydro-carbons up to the 1,027 range instead of below the limit of 220. Anyone else know if that would be what caused that?
  14. It failed. it passed everything with flying colors except the hydro carbons at idle, one, it had 4 vacume leaks wich I fixed, 2 it was idling slow after it was warm and ran real rough. until it passed 1,000 rpms or so. So I gave it a tune up with the help of a friend, got the vacume leaks traced and fixed so now it runs smooth and doesn't hesitate on throttle up. One question, does the carter-webber carb's for the ea81's have an air/fuel mixture adjustment at all?
  15. 30 bucks is something I don't have spare at the moment...I still have to license and emission the car. I just want it to stop for a month before I have to replace em really. Austin, how bout I take yer rear discs and in a month I'll buy ya a new set from pap?
  16. how much are ya tryin to get from me for the drums? , And the moter was just put in with a pretty meaty clutch, so I'm not worried about that.
  17. So, I've descovered the brakes on the 84 brat are nearly metal to metal on the fronts, and that I can't bleed the rear drumbs cause someone decided to cross thread one bleeder valve, and clip off the other. And the pedal nearly hits the floor before it gets pressure. So I'm redoing the brakes... anything special I should check while doing this? anything that goes bad commonly on these cars at all with the break system? Also, I'm swaping out tranny's, though nothing is really wrong with the one thats in there, it does have shifting linkage slack severly. The one I got for it to replace it with has really tight shifting linkage, and I'm refering to the linkage inside the tranny, or on the bar going into it... the bolt on part that bolts to the shift stick is no longer well attached to the shaft that goes into the tranny. Anything I should do while I'm at it with the tranny? Thanks for any info.
  18. ok, well that sounds good then, I don't want to lift it yet though, I want to wait until I can afford another daily driver... lol:D
  19. thats not what Austin told me, he says the whole tranny drops 3 inches as well, so the shifting linkage is 3 inches shorter, and thus harder to use, isn't it? or am I Missing something here?
  20. yeah I don wanna lift it, to much work....and I don't want to deal with the shifting linkage issue when the tranny is droped 3 inches. So I won't do intense offroading. But some of the milder trails I wanna go down.
  21. later end of march? I should have my brat all running and road leagle by then.... I just hope it's something not too severe as I don't feel like lifting my brat....:-p I'll just find some bigger tires to put on it... heh heh heh:D
  22. gotchya, so it is the same kinda deal as it is on the chrysler, only diffrence is, I know where the 2 diffrent vents are on the chrysler... I have yet to find the vent it's self in the brat lol
  23. One of the ones? sorry I'm not making sense of that. I mean does it do what my old old car does, and let in fresh air, or does it open a vent to the blower from the outside? or what?
  24. Ok, I'll check it out. Another thing I was wondering, is theres that vent slider in there, what exactly does it do?
  25. bump, looked, I didn't see anything obvious, but I'll look around again. thanks though.
