Poor 1986 XT turbo (sad story)
Mr. Carb replied to Mr. Carb's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Thanks Bennie! I do know these have become very rare, I haven't seen a 1.8 turbo XT in a long time now. -
After being basically gone from normal life the past few years, my XT got neglected as I had no free time to mess with it. Winter storm in 2008 caved in the carport it was in shattering the front and rear windows. It then sat covered with tarp that wasn't keeping water out. Interior is more or less destroyed, very wet, mossy and moldy. The body managed to not be damaged from the carport. I'm trying to decide if it's still worth putting back together or if it should go to pick n pull. Austin and I replaced the head gaskets in the engine but never got it to run right since. It ran good before replacing the head gaskets other than the excessive white smoke. Right now it's in a garage all dried out, and the engine is on an engine stand. The moon roof was accidentally ran over by a family member moving one of his cars. I attached a couple of current photos of the poor thing. What do you guys think? worth it? not worth it? I'm willing to spend time on it, just have limited funds for it. I thought it would make a good commuter car once fixed, given that when it ran I was getting about 31mpg with it. There are more pics in the gallery linked below:

Hatch Patrol annual XMas tree run

I bet with all the rain in the mountains you might find it there now, providing flood water's didn't take it away. -

Proof that we got a tree. I didn't take to many other pictures, I was too busy hanging out and eating lunch. -
WCSS12 Pictures!
Mr. Carb replied to SubaruWagon87's topic in Meet n' Greet. Your USMB Welcome Center
I had to stop in Gold bar and take each wheel off one at a time to remove the mud from the inside of the rims... I also hosed off the wheel wells, at least for me, the mud came off if I got it wet, let it soak for a few minutes, then blasted it with the hose. I moved the car when I was done and discovered the driveway I was parked in had a foot print of my entire car of mud about 2 inches thick, all of it came off my car. I still hear chunks falling off as I drive down the freeway to and from work. I still think it was worth it! -
I'm betting it's the fuel pump, if it fails like mine did, that's more than likely your problem. They typically fail by cracking or popping the cap off of the bottom of the pressurized section of the fuel pump, thus leaking gas pressure back into the gas tank. Also, that Air control valve, and clutch switch could be another thing to start looking at. My 2001 always changes idle speeds based on being in neutral and whether or not the clutch is depressed, especially when cold. You can see in this picture the part that failed on my fuel pump, notice the small piece of O-ring sticking out? I hope that helps.

Ok, I'm leaving Friday late afternoon or evening for Gold Bar, staying there over night and then going over the hill to Cashmere around 7-8am. No camping for me. -

I still haven't decided what time I'm leaving yet Friday, or if I'm camping there or staying over night in Gold Bar. Depends on if I can get my tent fixed and cleaned enough in time. I will be bringing a bunch of extra parts to the show -
I got my pictures up as well, Just took me a while to get back on to the USMB. http://thecarl.smugmug.com/Fairs-Events-Weddings/WCSS/9453939_6wG2F#634866665_N9gVn

1986 XT fixing... still...
Mr. Carb replied to Mr. Carb's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Ah, ok. Well I can't drive it anywhere with the 2 windows missing. I'll have to find someone who is willing to go all the way up to Gold Bar to install the windows, or tow the car. -
Compiling database for Gen2 Brat sales evaluations
Mr. Carb replied to edrach's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Ed, what did the insurance company say when you showed them the paper work involving my brat, which was far from mint condition, and they still gave me around 3900 for it? See picture below, thats what it looked like before it was totaled. -
I've began work on the XT sense it was crushed by a collapsed car port last winter. Body damage is minimal, there's a small 2x8 inch dent in the rear of the roof about 1 inch at most deep, the window frame appears to be straight still. Both front and rear window were broken/blown out from the main supports of the car port. So I guess the question would be, is it more work than it's worth to find new glass and put it in my self? Or am I better off hireing a glass company to come out and put new glass in for me?
-
The brat had that problem, I never did fix it. But yeah, it's just the whole mechanical assembly under the valance needing grease. Probably universal stuff would be good enough as far as I know. I once sprayed it with wd40 to make it go away temporary.

Winter storm damage to the XT! No's!
Mr. Carb replied to Mr. Carb's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Well I have a sigh of relief today. I went up to Gold Bar, despite the floods, made it in decent time too, from Everett it only took about an hour. All of the heavy warm rain has melted a lot of snow, but in spots almost a foot still remains, however the collapsed car shed is snow free, I was able to lift up the tarp and look at the damage done to my poor XT. Much better than I expected. Front windshield is cracked from one of the polls landing on it. The rear window was blown out due to the same. A third poll landed on the roof of the car, only producing a small dent, it didn't even bend the window frame despite how close to the rear window it landed. It'll buff right out. Time to take a zzz to the remains of the carport's metal frame trapping the XT. Sorry, to much fun with the little graphics. Probably later this spring or summer I will be looking to get both front and rear windows replaced. I still have to get the beast running again! -
Winter storm damage to the XT! No's!
Mr. Carb replied to Mr. Carb's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Well, up in the soggy West slope Casecade mountain foot hills it only takes a week or two of being exposed to the elements for everything to grow mold. Maybe I can clean it up real nice and good with a steam vac. -

Yeah, I wonder how hard it would be to install the glass my self, or have a professional install it for me... It's probably going to need a new interior now too due to the weather damage it's received and a lot of pounding the roof straight again. -
So I went up to the house I have my Subaru XT stored at to check on it. A sight I did not want to see. Do you guys think it will buff right out? Here's the pics. And yep, thats a blown out rear window. Side windows are all intact, so are all of the pillars. Roof has a large dent in it. Rear window was blown out by a kinked poll going through it. Front windsheild is also heavily fractured and needs replacement. This is turning into a very expencive car.

Yeah, the impreza's are way different. Single couple holder on this that folds out of the dash from a thin vertical slit. I unclipped everything but theres still something under the radio on the left side that is holding it in place, right next to the ash tray. This is an 2001 Outback Limited. Forgot to add that in the first post, my bad. -Carl

Well I'm a little not so experienced with the newer gen cars. I was able to figure out how to pull apart the ea81's dash and the XT's dash, but on the Outback, I couldn't figure out what is holding the trim cover over the radio on at the bottom. I was able to detach the top half, as I had to replace my instrument cluster lights. Any insight? I appreciate it, thank you!

I wanted to buy it back and part it out, but due to my current situation I needed to get rid of it. Problem is, I'm moving and the new place will only let me have one car. I'm still trying to figure out what to do with my other two cars. So, as much as I'd love to buy another brat right now... I can't. :-\ It will have to wait until I make enough money to rent a car storage or to rent a place that lets me have all my cars again.

Well good news everyone, the insurance company called and gave me a totaled offer. $3800 bucks. I took it. Only because I know thats more than I could have sold that thing for before it was hit. I'm really surprised they didn't low ball me after all this time. Next project: The 86' Xt Turbo

Jeeze, by the time I got on here to look at it, the add is already gone. Still haven't herd from EITHER insurance company, I've called both several times and left voice mails, I'm thinking it's now time to get an attourney.
