SJR Ultimate offroader project
Scott in Bellingham replied to Scott in Bellingham's topic in Off Road
Ive reconsidered some of the specs since I started this thread:addition in red with using the stock VW engine and transaxle turned 90 it allows the use of the VW final drive 4 to 1 then into the Soob diffs front and read to make room for this the front axle needs to move forward, this also gives a better aproach angle , this will give really low gears , only drawback is top speed on road would be maybe 35 MPH , so this would most likley be a trailer rig heres the latest comp chop shop -
Any updates on this Secret one? hows it coming along, when will the secret be out?

Im using stock Toyota rims 15 x 6 running 27 x 9.5 swampers drives good , keeps the tires in tight, I dont remember the backset but its 1/8 different then stock , thinking its 3-7/8" , ran some 8 " wide rims with a 3" back space looked cool but stearing wasnt great and got the side of the car dirty they really stuck out

Rear bumper.. what are my options?
Scott in Bellingham replied to PeterD's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
for towing I would run a length of steel from your bumper tow point up to the suspention cross pipe -
I love your car

I like that maybe I could incorporate this on my ultimate wheeler , using airshocks instead of the normal springs, what about the subaru air control system stuff could it be modified for offroad in this way

come by tonight after 5:00 if you can

bring it over and we will make the mod on me

with a transfercase conversion the engine stays up high in the stock location, and the front axles are driven by another diff from a driveshaft
-
OK these r180 diffs what vehicle are they found in? is it the 720 truck only? and what gear ratio are they? , also you mention long side axle , does that mean the diff in the 720 truck is not center mounted and has 2 lengths of axles? I like this idea

thats great! I think I was 16 when I learned and and 17 befor I got a AC buzz Box , sure wish I had a MIG when I was 14

if you could build or have built a Awesome offroad Subie what would it look like ? what would you build into it? Heres one I cobbled up on the Comp: it has a 89" wheelbase Diesel engine good aproach and departure angles 6-8" lift 31 or 33" tires 4 to 1 Transfer gear reduction more travel then stock on board compressor with 4 adjustable airshocks (plus stock springs), the airshocks would be controlled on the dash so on a side hill so could keep the vehicle somewhat stable optional doors and hatch lid to keep the weight down below 2000LB

I would recomend running a MIG welder with .030 wire sheilded with 75/25 argon / CO2 mix , this is what i use , it will do standard body sheet metal, exhast pipes, small tubing, up to 1/4" thick or so, I also have a ARC welder which I havent used for a long time, once you learn the MIG its almost like a hot glue gun for steel,

probably the most used skill I use in building offroad creations ( weld/fab) , it will open a whole new world of options for you

using rear diff up front (T-case Conversion)
Scott in Bellingham replied to Scott in Bellingham's topic in Off Road
great imfo guys thanks, looks like the older style EA81 gives you more room SJR -
ok , I measured the width of the transaxle and the rear diff, looks like the trasaxle is about 1/2" wider were the axles mount up , so if I run a rear diff up front what do you do to make up for the 1/2"? , also any advice or pics on how that diff gets mounted in that crossmember

Your fender cutting solution? pic's if possible please
Scott in Bellingham replied to FirstSubaruGLwagon's topic in Off Road
... Heres mine , I trimmed out the front and back , then turned it under using a dolly and hammer, 27" tires 6" lift -
trail about 3 hours long, I put 8 + miles on my car, could have cut the time in half if all rigs were lifted with tires, nothing machanical broke, dusty hit a tree with left front, both stock soobs got side dents , I came out with no added carnage or damage, Love those Super Swampers !!
