  1. Well after going from my 97 Outback into a 98 Jeep Wrangler for about 1.5yrs..It was time to return to my roots..and into a Subaru.Already gave her the name of Silvia (just popped into my head while laying down).

She has just over 109k and sport shift auto trans..

    Major difference from the Jeep..

  2. (Not to hijack, but didn't wanna start new thread.also tried the search and got this thread)

My 97 Outback (2.5,5spd) tripped a code P0400 awhile back (finally had it read due to inspection time) and i was told it had something to do with O2 sensor but also that bank 1 was lean (iirc,or could of been rich..should of written everything down cause now i'm not entirely sure.all i remember now for sure is the code) :banghead:

i haven't noticed any issues driving/idling,etc either..just cruddy gas mileage..

  3. ok so i'll be getting the crank pulley replaced this weekend (fingers crossed that it doesn't separate completely before then)..a buddy of mine is a Subie Mech and has a used one he'll install for me cheap (providing he doesn't have any issues)

the weird thing i have noticed..when the Battery/Brake light comes on,the lights get a little brighter and heater fan speed picks up a little..i should probably wait till crank pulley is replaced to see if the slipping is messing with the alt..(might not get correct reading if the separated pulley is effecting alt..am i correct in thinking that ?)

  4. http://legacygt.com/forums/showthread.php/change-heater-control-lights-95-99-legacy-26408.html

Hint: Skip step 7. Unhook the control cable from the other end--it's much easier!

    Good luck.

the control cable goes where btw ? i gotta do this too and as much info would help.(i even book marked the above link)

is there leds that can be put in there in place of reg bulbs ?

Glad this thread got brought back from the dead, saves me the trouble of searching :brow:

  5. well it turns out the Crank shaft pulley (aka-harmonic balancer) has separated at the rubber.which could be causing the alt to not spin correctly..

was quoted close to $300-$400 for it from dealer (must be gold)

now the odd thing is,advance auto can't get em (apparently a dealer only part) but i found this one on line for a 96 legacy (i think)..would it still work on a 97 ? (well fit note says "Production: -05/1996, Harmonic Balancer for Models w/ Engine made in Japan" )

Subaru dealer also said they noticed oil in the coolant res(head gasket was down about 100K ago),the oil pan is either leaking or the separator plate is leaking (i knew something at the back of the engine is leaking oil, just hope it's the pan..)

  6. The 96 - 99 cars had a good spot right where the fuel lines come into the fire wall behind the drivers strut tower. There are 3 lines, but a plug in the firewall with 4 "nipples". Poke a hole in the empty one and feed the wire through.

Man,had i known about that spot i would of stopped poking a hole through the grommet for the clutch (or brake) when i would run power for the Amps..

  7. On a side note, something i noticed while trying to figure what the problem was that was causing the Battery/Brake light to come on..

I noticed the Crank shaft pulley looked like it was wobbling..

the other pulleys didn't look like the crank did while spinning..if it's on slightly off, will it cause any damage to anything ? doesn't look like belt is getting chewed or anything..

  8. Besides the Battery,Alt (along with belt) and connections..is there anything else that would trigger the batter and brake light to come on ?

It doesn't come on all the time but on occasion it'll flicker on dimly then come on bright.stays on for about 10 secs then goes back out..might do it again about 20 mins later (or maybe not)

It doesn't matter if any accessory's (lights, radio, heat, etc) are on..couple weeks ago during the day with just heat on low,it kept doing it while driving on the highway..

now when i bought the Outback (which is a 97) back in Sept, the previous owner said the Alt,both belts, and battery were replaced about 6 months prior,so unless they put a bad alt or battery in..i can't see the issue being those two.

(btw, belts were tightened the other day and are in great shape)

  9. Wasn't today but yesterday i -

Replaced gas cap (old one was original and gasket collapsed)

Tightened Alt belt (didn't fix issue with battery/brake light coming on periodically (alt/battery is a yr old) only while accelerating, gotta check connections)

Polished and sealed head lights and tail lights

    and changed wiper blades..

Felt good to be out there checking off a few of the things needed done..

  10. yep. long term solution

yup,i got same result when i did my Outbacks lenses today..wondering if i should of wet sanded too..they weren't as bad as yours but did get major difference with the turtle wax stuff..

Not sure why i waited so long to do it..(have owned her since Sept)

  11. ok cool.(fingers crossed about cross member bolts not breaking, had that happen with my Heep)

btw,i checked price of trans mount at advance, they only showed em for autos (awd) but one for manual (but 2wd models)..are the awd auto mounts the same as awd manuals ?

and on a sad side note..when the guy brought up engine and trans mount diagram pic,had to explain to the guy that the pic was useless due to engine/trans configuration was all wrong..it was for your tipical fwd vehicle.(side mounted 4 cyl engine with trans on the side)

at least they could do,if they're gonna have diagram is to have it correctly done...

  12. You can run 27" tires as it is right now. I've got a friend running 215/70r16's which are 28" diameter on his WRX with Outback struts in it and they lightly rubbed on the rear edge of the rocker before we tapped it a bit with a hammer.

    cool.

i know going 215/75/15 (27.7") isn't much of a gain over stock size of 205/70/15 (26.3") but it'll be a start of gaining some height.

It'll be about 1.4" gain (providing my math was correct)
