Oops, kinda forgot about this thread.. the Outback is a 2.5,5spd fastest we went was maybe 55 for short distances then down.. yeah,i never use the gas gauge for accurate reading but just for rough idea.. should of refilled once i got to destination to figure out exactly how much gas i used compared to miles traveled.. i'm just not used to getting such high mpg..coming from a lifted jeep with a 4.0 that got maybe 16-17mpg.. oh,and i think connection for filler neck is leaking..stunk something fierce on the way up to VT till gas level went down.. -
When i drove to Vermont with the Outback (following my buddy who was flat towing his Bronco) i filled up Concord, drove up 93 to Plymouth and took the back roads the rest of the way.by the time i got to destination,i only used 0.25 tank.the drive back home was back roads all the way.. Well when i filled back up last night,i figured out that i got approx 34 mpg (miles traveled divided by total gallons to refill) i could of sworn that highway mpg was lower the 34 and where i hardly took the highway (back road speeds varied from 35-55 though) i was wondering if since i was behind a larger vehicle, maybe being in the draft helped ?? Not complaining but i just have never had a vehicle that got that kinda mileage..

yup it is.i can't decide if i wanna run the outback in the 4 cyl class head to head mud drags next year (that is if i have it lifted and better tires like 27" TSLs) or pick up a couple hundred $$ soob and do the Tough Truck race.. here is a few pics i got. http://s24.photobucket.com/albums/c34/beretta92d/Vermonster%202010%20day%20trip/Vermonster%20Sept%2024th%20and%2025th/ a buddy of mine ran his Bronco II through the Trench and got two 1st place trophy's (one for class 1 (4wd with 36" or less tires) and one for class 5 (broken parts) and his brother drove his Bronco II the next day and got 2nd place in class 5 this pic reminds me..i need to get a couple USMB decals.. -
If any of the New England members here aren't doing anything this weekend,i'll be going to this in Bradford,VT www.vermonster4x4.com A friend runs his Bronco II in The Trench (has gotten 2nd place in his class before) and if i still had the XJ,i'd probably give it a go myself..(maybe with the Outback..sitting on the fence as far as that's concerned..) I'll be staying the weekend at the field that the owner rents (only has porta pottys as convience) but it's $5 for the weekend and like 10mins away from event.. *Just thought of it,i wonder if i should of put this in the Offroad section..*

what did you use to clean em with ? mine need cleaning and was gonna grab permatex and give it a shot..i also read that tooth paste will do just as well of a job.. did you check in the vents to make sure no critter has made a nest ? the 86 brat i had,had a couple nests and they created a odd smell with the heat on..

I did the rear on my 97 Outback like last week..soaked it for like 2 days and rented a O2 sensor socket set from advance for like $30 (full refund upon returning it).though i had a couple people say to use a 7/8 boxed end wrench (i figured i'd try the socket) well things didn't turn out so good..snapped the threaded bung clean off the cat.. (it has happened before with the Jeep, though i got injured on that one)..ended up having to replace cat.. I hope you don't have the same issues..good luck.

That looks like Stanley..Subiegals little guy... Pics look great..i was thinking, maybe next yr i could fly over and rent a subie to come to the show in..any rental places rent subies over there ?

Not to Hi-Jack O/Ps thread but (ah,never mind that part..lol) will Seafoam help with noisy lifters ? oil level is spot on and no oil pressure light (actually goes out a sec or two after starting).. I'm using 10w30 for weight.(in my older Soobs (92),i have used 20w50 before)..my 97 Outback has a little over 200K..the ticking goes away after a few mins of driving but would love to have no tick at idle..

a friend of mine has a 97 Leg GT wagon i was gonna buy from him but he hasn't been able to get much work done to it.last i knew,it needed a front cat, possiable rear wheel bearing and a couple odd an end pieces. it's a 5 spd in pretty good shape besides what was mentioned..right now he has it parked in his back yard located up here in Manchester,N.H. let me know if you want me to inquire about it ?

oh it doesn't have the "sloppy shifter syndrom" just if while in certain gears and i let off the gas, shifter moves back an forth (not like it's trying to come out of gear) trans must be moving up and down a bit causing shifter to move.. bottom trans mount seems easy enough to replace..but i have said that before and had issues.. btw,are the spring bolts supposed to go a certain way (spring on a certain side of the flange) ? couldn't seem to get that connection tight enough and leaks a tiny bit..unless they need replacing..

well while attempting to remove O2 sensor with O2 socket (should of used 7/8th boxed end wrench like some here and my Mech friend recommended) the O2 sensor and the threaded bung got torn right off the cat.. well new cat and O2 sensor in and had the code cleared.fought with the two front bolts but a cut off wheel did the job (started rounding the heads and couldn't get in with extractor socket due to heat shield on the forward section of pipe..) Advance auto wanted like $400 for new cat which they had in stock but autozone was cheaper but didn't have in stock..thankfully advance called autozone up and matched their price of $246. cause $400 would of emptied checking acct.. Oh,while i was under it,i found out i'll also need trans mounts..rubber is worn and i could physically move the trans..no wonder the shifter moves around like it does..

well seeing that the check engine light is on,not sure if it's P0420 but the Dealership and advance both said the lower O2 sensor (down stream) is what is causing the CEL.. i haven't brought for inspection yet cause i gotta patch rocker today and i figured a CEL would be a automatic failure.. (Still gotta figure out where on exhaust it is..i haven't had to replace one on a Subaru yet..and i have owned about 10 so far)

I recall reading somewhere that there was a certain year when the Legacy was becoming the Outback (Outback trim but still Legacy suspension height, etc) My 97 Legacy Outback seems to sit low like a reg Legacy but has trim, larger wheels, etc of a Outback..If i was to install Outback struts, would i still get the extra height like if i did it to a Legacy (i assume i will) oh and what year again would they have to come from again ? Thanks in advance.
