  1. fill those cans with sand. Liquid sloshes around and can be dangerous. Tube sand is 60 lbs and 5 bucks or so. so less than 30 bucks you can do sand, have a traction material, and if not needed, throw it in the side yard or spread it on the grass when you are done with the winter. Sometimes we try and reinvent something that already works pretty well.
  2. My opinion wider tires are not better, they trap the snow under them and not let the tire get down to something more solid. That said, the difference you are talking about will not matter, I have had this issue on pickup trucks with wide tires on them, they suck in the snow.
  3. So far so good I do not see any signs of head gasket issues in the 200 miles. Do have a heater issue, lots of heat in town, goes cold on the highway. Seems odd. Any ideas? Could it just be the hoses are backwards on the block? I do have a subaru t-stat. and radiator and overflow bottle are full and working normally. Thanks
  4. I also think that the small passages in the radiator would increase back pressure and make your pump work harder. the hose would have no restriction in the flow. Also, less efficient, but you could use blue pump discharge hose (maybe they sell it in black?) and when you turn the pump off it could self drain, and not have to be removed in the winter... (king of lazy my wife might call me???)
  5. yes, also gets slick when using at as a oil absorber on the shop floor. had to change that...
  6. I feel your pain, been there, like i said before, this is exactly what mine was doing after I changed the gaskets the 1st time. Sucks. But I put another 500 into it and so far it appears to have fixed it. My mistake was assuming that what was good enough prep work for other cars I had done, was good enough for this one. It was not, and also the Subaru gaskets.
  7. cool thanks for the offer. I am going to see how it goes I found one off the help section for a gm. Have not tried it yet. I think I will try that on my next day off, and if not, then I will just wait and see if the head gasket replacement has fixed the car for good. them go find anther light, and possibly a bumper. make it look as good as we can for a 20 year old car.
  8. man, i would not haul around motor oil for weight. a sand tube or two. no mess if the leak, and sand for traction if needed.
  9. almost identical to what i went through. Spent 4 months trying everything under the sun, hoping it was not the gaskets. it also would not run the overflow correctly. it would push into the overflow, but not pull from it. and kept building air in the cooling system over time. after overheating again, and blowing water out of the top of the radiator again, I did them again, and used GD's method for machining at home. hope you have better luck than i did..
  10. from this light it is an "eagle eye" replacement. looking on line subaru uses clips. are these rings universal? or am I going to be looking for a new headlight?
  11. I do not know who did the head gaskets, or what they used for pI did mine in april. used fel-pro gaskets, and made a few mistakes on surface prep, that were fine for the dodge and ford I have replaced head gaskets on before. I just finished doing them again, with Subaru gaskets and better prep. The subaru gaskets are much different. So maybe look into what was used, and what prep work they did? I just got mine back on the road, so we will see if that resolved the issues
  12. Just had this issue, and that is what mine was, did not get the sensor plugged in. it is buried under there on my 99
  13. I did not get the ring when I got the light. How do I keep it in? or do I just go get the ring, and what years would have that ring and fit? maybe i can tape it in until i get to the yard again the light bolts in fine.
  14. I picked up a head light at the pick and pull, Got ready to put it in, and noticed that the mounting for the bulb is different. one has a screw on (one I got) and the other has a clip in mount (the one that was in the car). Looking at the new ones on line they are all screw in mounts. This is where the bulb mounts into the headlight. my car is a 99, not sure what to do now. do I go back and get the plug, and use the good light housing I found, or change both, or go find a light that has the same type of mount, and does anyone know what year to look at? Thanks
  15. headgaskets were 80, at one 50 at the other. I think it is the dealer. and they always need my vin why? they are engine parts do they really need me to get the vin to get me a part, Sorry just frustrated thinking of all the parts i got from them and thinking that i hve been charged that much more on all of them, it adds up. well picked it up last night, got to get it on today and go for a drive...
  16. called local dealer they quoted 185 called the dealer in across the river in oregon got it for 78. I think i am going to stop going to the local dealer...
  17. found them. man the one is right under the wires. hard to see hard to get at. working good now. Alt is putting out 10V, at idle. 14 if i rev the engine. so it is working. but maybe weak? or ok to leave on the car for now. Thanks so much, a few left to button up, then a drive..
  18. so i found thee 2 plugs, the spade connector i found where it goes, the 2 pin one, i can not find a home for. i assume it is one of the two you mentioned. going to go look again,, also on the crossover near the other one? also, the alt. is not charging. does it go anywhere except to the battery? the bolted wire and the plug connection.
  19. back again. maybe I should start another thread.? Got the engine back in. Very hard to start. but when started idles fine. Also have code p0117 coolant circuit low input. can you tell me where to look for that? if I did not plug something in, would that also relate to the hard start? Thanks Doug
  20. Americas tire, or discount what ever they are called now, will change out within 30 days. And credit or charge the difference. I have used that a couple of times on tires I just did not like. For those old enough, remember the commercial of the old lady throwing the tire through the window...
  21. Thicker oil should cause less leaking and more pressure. so 20w50 should have helped the pressure. How often do you check the oil?
  22. my girls were afraid of the 5speed neon I got them. Did not take long for them to become good at it. Some like it, some do not, but they all can drive one now. one just loves it and drives it like a sports car,
  23. Thanks, Saw that in another thread, but then found an older one that said 220 then 320. So I will just leave it at the 220. Thanks so much for all of the help,
  24. another question. I used 220 grip paper to surface, is that good enough, or in an old post I found to use 220 then 320. I am taking it apart again, is it good enough, or hit it with 320 before going back together. Thanks again for all the help.
