Thanks for the advice and replys, Well it sounds the same first start or hot, actually my get a little quieter as it runs and warms up. i also i noticed and the guy that is using it noticed that it appears to be a little quieter , i would not say it is cured i`m just hope full. if it blows up i guess i can change the engine easy enough.. a ej.2.2 with 115k miles with rod knock must have had a abusive past life. when i got the car the oil was black and 2 quarts low, with a blown HG , bad Cam censor thanks

i replaced the tensioner along with timing belt and pulleys, head gaskets, the engine was noisy before i did this work, also the power steering pump bearing was shot and that made noise, i replaced that , but still noisy, i am sure its not the tensioner slapping around. I pulled one valve cover but i dont remember if it had a set screw on the end, i am not sure how to tell the difference between lifters, i am learning as i go, i will try and fix what ever it turns out to be, the heads were flat and no smoke at start up so i didnt have the heads rebuilt when i did the HG. maybe i should of.

the top end is noisy, 116k miles on a 1996 legacy i know this is low miles for the ej2.2 this is my fourth one. i bought the car for $350 with bad head gaskets, i fixed them and other small things. overall the car is great. after HG, fixing the A/C. and other stuff. the engine is noisy IM sure its not rod knock but more top end, im going to stat another thread with video to try and fix it. I changed the oil 3 times this time i have 16oz of mystery oil along with 10-40 after 1000 miles i wanted to change oil again. thats why i asked about high mile oil. do i do a valve job? are the lifters hydraulic on a 96 ? thanks

before you go crazy ripping the heads apart, take out the cam and crank sensors and test them for continuity , and even then they read good they still could be bad because when the wire gets hot inside the sensor it ex-spans then does not work. better yet check the car with a computer obd2 for codes, if one are bad they will not throw the dash light on.
