power cutting out/stalling. not the fuel pump
Rambo replied to Rambo's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Ok I can confirm it's not the relay. Changed it up and the problem was still there. I also opened up the distributor and it looked like everything was good in there. Don't think the cat is clogged either since its new. I am thinking the problem is electrical. When I would turn my ignition on sometimes you can hear the fuel pump running. Most of the time it won't though. Is there any electrical part that would cause the engine to cut out randomly? I find that the car doesn't stall (as much) when I am accelerating hard. -
power cutting out/stalling. not the fuel pump

It's a 94. What makes you think it's the distributor? Would I have to replace is or are there other options? -
This car is driving me insane. I changed the fuel filter and pump and realized I just wasted my money. I'm still having the same problems as before. The car just losses power and stalls randomly. At idle it usually dies and comes back alive a few times before dying completely. It also stalls out when driving no matter what the speed. I checked the relay as well but I managed to make it click when I wired it up to my battery. When I turn the key I never hear the relay click or the pump priming. Is it possible that even though the relay passed a few electrical tests its still faulty? Does anyone have suggestions as to what else could be the problem? I heard clogged fuel lines could be an issue.

Please help. Fuel pump installation problems
Rambo replied to Rambo's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Do I have to worry about running a drill near the fuel lines? -
Nothing is ever straightforward with my 94 loyale. I have a few problems and was wondering if anyone has a crafty solution to them. I removed the three 10mm bolts that attach the fuel pump to the underside of the car. BUT all three of the bolts broke off. There is also a nut on the other side of all of them but they are so rusted on I can't get them out. The other problem i have is that the original fuel pump mounting bracket has a rusted on screw that wont come out either. The new mounting bracket I have does not fit properly so I need the original. I'll attach pictures so you have a better idea of what I'm talking about.

can I use a fuel pump from a 92 Loyale on my 94?
Rambo replied to Rambo's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Ok thanks for the advice everyone. Hopefully the pump in the scrapyard isn't garbage. -
I've been having intermittent problems with my tach dropping to 0, usually after pressing the clutch, coasting at slow speeds, and when driving at around 70mph. It's accompanied by a clicking sound whenever out drops. I've also been stalling at red lights but the car usually will start back up after a few seconds. I installed a new fuel filter thinking that might solve the issue, but it actually made the stalling worse. I'm driving a 94 loyale. Any suggestions as to why this is happening?

clunking worsening after new cat converter installation
Rambo replied to Rambo's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
At first I suspected bad motor mounts, but I've had the sounds change on me everytime I readjusted the cat converter. And the sound seems like it's coming from where the front and rear cat meet, where the spring bolts attach. Is it possible that over tightening them can worsen the sound? I feel like the cat has enough clearance to not hit underneath the car when I accelerate hard (unless it can move up around 1/2"). -
Since I got this car it has had a clunking noises every now and then when I'm accelerating. It never bothered me until I replaced the cat converter. The clunking got worse after that so I went to the mechanic and asked what could be the problem. He showed me that the cat converter was pressed against the underside of the car. So I went home and readjusted it so it's clear from the underside, and though the clunking has lessened, it now is happening when I'm coasting and even in 4wd (clunking used to go away with 4wd. Do you guys know if there's a way to lower the cat converter or how to get rid of the noise?

new exhaust system leaking fuel
Rambo replied to Rambo's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Also, should I be worried that my new system smells much more heavily of gasoline than my old one. I rechecked the liquid and it is indeed water. -
new exhaust system leaking fuel
Rambo replied to Rambo's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Sorry I think it might just be water. Looked a bit yellowish but it doesn't smell stongly of fuel. I'm still concerned as to why it's leaking where the u bolts are. -
I put in a new walker exhaust system in my car but am getting leaks at the joints of the muffler and exhaust spout, as well as the rear cat converter (comes in 2 pieces). I was given exhaust clamps (U-bolts) in the kit, but they aren't doing a good job keeping the fuel off the the ground... any suggestions for dealing with this issue? And how tight should the clamps be?

removing spring bolt that spins but doesn't come out
Rambo replied to Rambo's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I had to cut it off with a grinder. Anyways now I have new problems to deal with... -
Nevermind I'm just going to replace it. However I just ran into anotber problem. The spring bolts are turning but they aren't coming out. Any suggestions for dealing with this?

Hey guys so I am about to replace the rear cat converter, muffler, and exhaust tips on my loyale, but I want to know whether my cat converter can be salvaged. One mechanic told me that the car converter needed to be replaced because its rusty and is detached from the muffler. I need your opinions. I attached pictures of the worst area of rust, and the part where the cat pipe attaches to the muffler. Do you guys think that I could just put on a new gasket and keep the old cat?

valve cover still leaking after replacement
Rambo replied to Rambo's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Yeah Len I think I will have to resort to using sealant when I redo them. I read the instructions and it specifically said to install the gasket dry, but whatever. However I'm going to follow Dave's advice and look at the o rings first and see if they are leaking. It's only a tiny amount of oil (huge improvement from last time) but I don't think the neighbors appreciate the mess haha. -
I replaced the valve cover gasket on my 94 loyale but noticed that it still leaks a little bit. I cleaned the valve cover pretty well and made sure there was no damage to the mating surface before putting it back on. I retightened the bolts today but that didn't seem to stop the problem. I have read somewhere that the gasket shouldn't be visible after you tighten them, but I don't know whether that's true or not. Any ideas as to what the problem is? I'm using a felpro gasket.

So last night when I was engaging the 4WD I noticed a constant rattling noise from the rear passenger side of the car. It goes away after I disengage the 4WD. There is also a loud thud whenever I disengage. Both these noises are new, so is it a sign of something going wrong? Please give me some good news.

Ok I managed to find coolant hose but I cut it a bit too short. The leak is fixed but the nipples where the hose attaches to are a little exposed. Will that cause any problems or should I get another hose?
