I recently acquired a TD05 from a GC8 body STI and am wanting to install it on my GF8 WRX wagon(EJ20G). Anyway, what I was wondering is, am I going to need to upgrade my injectors to keep up with the new turbo? Will an ECU reflash be required? I am also going to be installing a set of headers on this puppy so I just want to get all my ducks in a row before I follow through with my plan. Thanks for any help. Patrick

Not only that, but you get people trying to push the envelope of a car that they precieve to be the ultimate in handling capabilities. It is a very common misconception. You can have AWD and mods galore, but they don't mean squat when the person behind the wheel doesn't have the knowledge and experience to use them correctly and more importantly, know when to back off the go pedal. People need to remember, a car is an extension of yourself. If you aren't a good driver, your car will reflect that and often times, exploit your mistakes, which turn into accidents. Motor Safely. While this may be partially true, how do you explain increased richness during a cold-idle start-up? Most cars that the ECU can adjust to difference in intake temp, will add additional fuel depending on that incoming air's temperature. That's why if you trick the ECU with one of those cheap resisitors attached to the IAT sensor, it will cause the ECU to add more fuel because the ECU doesn't think that the engine is warmed up. Now, an intercooler doesn't add any more air than is already there. You have to increase the amount of air that is drawn into the engine, by cams, oversized valves, porting, bigger turbo, more boost, it is your choice. An intercooler simply cools the air and causes it to become more dense, further lowering the threshhold for detonation. Of course, like kingbobdole said, the ecu will advance the timing. The cooler the air is, the harder it is for it to get hot enough in the combustion chamber for the A/F mixture to pre-ignite. That is why when you just simply add an intercooler on stock boost on an EA82T, you don't much, if any horsepower, just torque. Now if you turn up the boost(which will draw in more air) or change your turbocharger in favor of one that flows more air, you will gain a few horsepower. But the major thing is to make sure to add more fuel to take advantage of the increased airflow. Otherwise, you can give your engine the long kiss goodnight, because it is done. Patrick

An intercooler by itself will net you no extra horsepower on an EA82T. you have to remember, EA82Ts have small injectors(180cc) that are already running at like 85% duty cycle. The stock ECU cannot take advantage of cooler intake charge air by adding more fuel like most modern cars(ex: STi's, WRX's, Supras, Skylines, RX-7s, etc.). On modern turbo cars, the IAT signal is usually sent after air has already passed the MAF(if so equipped). I don't even think that the EA82Ts ecu can read the temperature difference after the MAF. With this being said, the ECU will not add any more fuel to compliment the cooler air that has entered the engine, so no horsepower is to be gained. Now, with a decent intercooler, you will, however, gain alot more torque on stock boost, as the air has to travel a longer distance(I.E.: fill the internal space of the intercooler) before it enters the engine. Throw some increased fuel pressure(via an aftermarket FPR and/or bigger injectors) and more boost pressure(via an MBC or EBC) into the mix with your newly mounted intercooler, and you got some extra pony power on your hands. HID lights on the GL wagon
4WDFrenzy replied to suberdave's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
The boxes are the ballasts for the bulbs. HID bulbs only use 35w compared to the factory 45w or 55w(can't remember off the top of my head). Dave, those light look superb! I was planning on installing a set on the ol' Draggin' Wagon when I come back to the states as well. The only thing I wish was different on the older subies is the beam pattern of the headlights. I kind of wish that they had a little more even and spread out beam like the RS's and WRX's. But they look great anyway. Good Job!!! Patrick -
Starting fluid doesn't auto-ignite to the best of my knowledge. You say that it is a Sebring? It might have a weak or bad coilpack. Does it crank okay?

EA82T runs great in cold temps, bad in hot
4WDFrenzy replied to civilpd's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I would highly suggest cleaning your MAF. You would be suprised at what a huge difference it will make. Dirty MAFs can cause all sorts of problems. You might also want to think about getting a different air filter too and here is why. Air filters that use oil to help trap dirt particles are not good for vehicles equipped with mass airflow sensors. When you open the butterfly to accelerate, the suction created by the engine will pull some of the oil through the filter and into the intake tract, thus coating the sensor wires of the MAF. Well, just like the oil on the filter, the oil that is now on your MAF will trap dirt particles too, which blocks the sensor wires from reading correctly. Don't get me wrong, K&N's are great, but not something I would recommend for a MAF equipped vehicle. For the price you pay for a K&N, you can probably get an APEX, an HKS(Foam or Stainless Steel), or a knock-off(Greddy, APEX, HKS, etc), and still have a little money to spare. It is just a suggestion that may keep you from having to spend more money down the line. Patrick -
Time for EVEN MORE power!

.....And after reading all of this stuff that has gone EXTREMELY off topic, I believe I have earned myself a nice long nap! Anyway, Steve, keep up the good work man! I look forward to your next update. Patrick -
Anyone tried to quieten cabin noise?
4WDFrenzy replied to nathan.chase's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
A good undercoating will reduce road noise significantly. I undercoated my GL-10, and the next day(after allowing it to dry overnight) I could immediatly tell the difference upon driving it. I'm not quite sure how many coats I applied, but I know I went through about 8 cans. When undercoating, just remember to apply it in the wheel wells, as that is where alot of road noise is transfered from. Patrick -
skishop69, where do you get your manifolds ported at? I have been looking into this company in Pennsylvania that offers a process called "Extrude Honing." Basically, they use a clay or putty material and force it through the runners at very high pressure levels. This removes material from the runners and also leaves behind a smooth, polished finish. I am really considering having this done to my EA82T manifold as it seems like it is worth the price and downtime. Here is a link: http://www.extrudehone.com/ Patrick

Steeeeeeeeeeeeve!!!!! Holy Crap!!!! Your car is going to be insane!!!!! I might have to enlist some of your knowledge for my build, if you don't mind. Good Job man!!!! Patrick -
This is so awesome!!! People are making leaps and bounds with their old school subarus. That makes me happy and gives me hope for my future project. Goodness Gracious Steve!!! 265 whp!!! On 2-1/4" exhaust!!!! That is just amazing!!! Man I wish I lived closer. I'd love to see that thing in action. I was thinking about upping the exhaust size on mine to 2.5"(with hi-flow cats of course) from the #2 cat back to the muffler and getting a 3" DP built. Congrats man!!! Sounds like you have a real winner. I think that I am only going to be running a mild setup compared to yours, but I suppose that I really need to look into the Greddy e-Manage Ultimate and some 280zx injectors. It makes me kinda wonder what kind of power output my GL-10 has right now with it's current setup? Hmmmm.....*sounds of hamster wheel turning* Skishop69, that really sounds like an intersting setup. Maybe you, jeffast123, and kingbobdole should all put your heads together for an ultimate turbo XT6 build. I think that you guys are on to something. Everyone, keep the stories coming. You guys don't know the extent of joy that you have just brought to my life. Patrick

Well if he has $16,000 laying around, he could buy the 200HP Supercharged one from Ramengines.com! Patrick

What exactly are you wanting to know? Are you looking for ideas for mods? Patrick
-
NOOOOOO!!! He is saying to pull the EA82T and install an EA81T, and build from there. Personally, I like my EA82T. With some more modification, I think it could be a very, very enjoyable engine. I have a few tricks(things that I have learned since I have been in Okinawa) up my sleeve that I plan to unleash on my GL-10 when I get back to the States. But, if I can't get my 95 WRX back stateside, I plan on pulling the motor, wiring harness, and buying an APEX F-Con for it and install it in the ol' Draggin' Wagon when the EA82T in it finally goes the way of the dinosaur. Wow! I'm sorry to hear that. How long did she last? I'm familiar with the blown rings thing. A friend of mine, whom I helped to install a Greddy bolt on turbo kit on his 98 Nissan 240SX(KA24DE), decided to turn the boost up and it wound up blowing the rings, TWICE! The car pulled strong though, with the boost turned up to 0.69 BAR(10 PSI), but the kit came preset at 0.41 BAR(6 PSI). I tried to prewarn him both times, but no dice. So I told him that it wasn't my car and I couldn't tell him what to do with it and let him make his own decision. I'm not saying that is what you did, just a fun little story. Have you checked into any aftermarket forged pistons, or both pistons & rods for the SPFI block? That may be the missing link in keeping those boosted high comp blocks together. Then, the only thing that you really have to worry about is the HG basically. Well, I hope that you are able to revive her and extract some solid ponies out of her. Patrick
-
Well, that most certainly, does not sound like fun. Where are you getting your stage 2 clutch from, if you don't mind me asking? If it is a secret, that's cool too. No big deal. Also, forgive me, because it has been awhile, and since most of the time my son keeps me busy and away from the computer, but what kind of turbo did you upgrade to, and most importantly, do you like it? Now that my son is sleeping alot more, maybe I can keep up with what is going on. Patrick

Hello again everyone! I was just inquiring as to the condition(s) of the arious turbo installs that were going on, on the forum in the past few months. I remember lots of people having big builds on their EAs while others opted for complete motor swaps. It's always nice to hear about the various snags and triumphs with the older subarus. I have some plans for mine, but can't do anything about it until I get back stateside, one of which, is to install one of these turbochargers:http://www.turbobygarrett.com/turbobygarrett/catelog/Turbochargers/GT25/GT2560R_466541_1.htm., along with some fuel management items(bigger injectors, Walbro fuel pump, maybe a e-Manage Ultimate or Blitz R-Fit),oil catch can, and a better flowing exhaust(probably 3" crush-bent w/ 2 high flow cats) to include a custom exhaust manifold and uppipe. So until then, I'm just interested to hear and see what everyone is doing while I float aimlessly out here in the Pacific. Have I mentioned that I miss my GL-10 lately? Anyway, if anyone wouldn't mind sharing their stories of customization, I'd greatly appreciate it. Oh yeah, has anyone dynoed their EA with a TD04 yet? Patrick
-
Hey everyone. I have a possibly stupid question about the exhaust manifolds on the EJ20Ts that is going to make me sound like a complete newb, but still I must ask. As some of you know, I own a 95 WRX wagon and a 02 WRX wagon. Well, I just had an epiphany and was wondering if the aftermarket exhaust manifolds offered for the 02 WRX would also fit the 95 WRX? Maybe I'm being nieve about this, but I figured that an EJ20T is an EJ20T no matter what the year, but I just wanted to know since I didn't really get far into modding my 02. If anyone can shed some light on this, I'd greatly appreciate it and so would my pocketbook. Patrick

FT4WD center diff question
4WDFrenzy replied to Phizinza's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
To the best of my knowledge, the fulltime 4 wheel drive trannys have center diff locks. According to my Haynes, there is a cable that attatches to the side of the transmission and operates a lever that engages and disengages the center differential lock. I could be wrong though, and I'm sure that if I am, someone will chime in shortly and straighten everything out. Patrick -
finaly got the Ej20G wagon on the dyno
4WDFrenzy replied to suberdave's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Ummmm, I'm really not trying to be rude, but the reason why they would place a fan in front of the car is to create airflow conditions that would normally be found when the car would be moving at that speed(because the car is tied down on the dyno instead of moving forward like it would be when driving). You have to keep the engine temps consistant to get consistant numbers. If you were to run a car on a dyno and not have sufficient airflow over the radiator, you'd get lower numbers and perhaps run the risk of detonating because the engine can't get rid of the heat properly. Also, if you check out his webpage, he has a scoop on his hood to feed cold air over the intercooler(it is the wagon on the left side of the pic), so he is good in that department. Patrick
