The "Diff Lock" fuse holder will indeed lock the center differential. I used to own a BG5 Legacy GT Wagon when I lived in Okinawa, Japan for 4 long years. It was meant for foul weather driving(snow, heavy rain, muddy, unpaved roads, etc) where and when tight cornering isn't really required. I also read somewhere that the automatic transmission has something like a 60/40 torque split without the diff lock being engaged. I was tempted on several occasions to connect a fuse holder and a relay, along with a toggle switch to the diff lock so that I could engage it without having to get out of the car during bad weather conditions. This was the answer to the Diff Lock switch in the old '80s model Subarus with the Fulltime 4WD trannys I think. I hope this helps. Patrick

That was the same thing that I thought everytime I would see one in Okinawa. The worst part about it was, the one that I saw the most, a GUY was driving, and doing so like it was the coolest thing on the road. I would cringe! YUCK!!!! Hello from Super Sunny California! Well, I think everyone will remember my last post about my '88 wagon. Good news, it didn't get the death sentence. I just could not bring myself to scrap her. She has been such a good car and we have had some good times together. So, I placed her on life support and put her in a storage unit, out of the weather and away from prying eyes. Hopefully, when I get the cash together, she'll get a new engine and hopefully a new lease on life. Then I will get around to fixing the little things like weatherseals and such. But she will hopefully be back on the road in the next 6 months. SUBARU will RIDE AGAIN!!!!! Patrick

Thank You! I'm very glad to be back on US soil again. We already have one good car(2002 Subaru WRX wagon) which belongs to yours truly. Last week, I attempted to get the wife into a new Subaru Forester, considering that all I heard while in Okinawa was," I want a Forester! I want a Forester!" So while looking for Foresters, what should I stumbe upon, but a 1998 Forester with 74,XXX miles on it. The dealer was only asking $5,000 or $6,000 for it. I thought it to be a good deal. The wife, however, did not. So I looked at new Foresters, which are going for between $18,000 and $19,000 for the base model Forester X. Well, she griped about the payments, belly-ached about the insurance that we would have to pay on it, and ultimately went out and bought an '04 Chevy Trailblazer, with 74,458 miles on the clock. It's not bad, but I feel like she betrayed Subaru after all of these years. At the same time though, I feel kinda good about buying a GM product since they seem to need all of the help they can get right now. On a lighter note, she(with my help since my credit and salesman swaying skills are better) got it for just under $8,000 with an extended service warranty. So I guess I can't complain about that, not to mention that it was her choice in vehicles. I can say this much though, I'd much rather the Trailblazer then the Honda CRV that her parents were trying to talk her into. Patrick

Still haven't decided yet. However, I've actually been entertaining the idea of putting her on life support, until I can acquire a new engine, then toss it in and attempt to bring her back to life. Heck, if I can replace the clutch without a shop, and only hand tools, a floor jack, and jackstands available, replacing the engine should be a piece of cake with an engine hoist and a garage. So was I. I even have some newish electronics on their way to California that I was going to install in it once we arrived there. I am one upset puppy. I was kinda hoping to come back, be able to fix the problem, and be driving it by now with a new 2.5" exhaust, but that isn't going to happen any time soon. I guess I'll just be a spectator to all of the new developments for now. Patrick

It's an '88 GL-10 Wagon with the FT4WD 5speed tranny. Sucky thing is, right before I went to Japan, I changed all the fluids, belts, and even the clutch, and not to mention all of the other stuff like the DP, fenderwell intake, etc. I think that my car just got mad at me and off'ed itself in retaliation. I have looked into new, or "new to me" engines for it, but the wife was complaining about the prices(who would've thought). So for now, it is just sitting in my friend's driveway, lifeless. Patrick

Hey everyone, I know it has been a little while since I have posted something. Well, now that I actually have something to post, I guess I'll get typing. So I finally got back to the US on the 12th(THANK GOD!!!) and was all ecstatic about seeing my old wagon again for the first time in 4 years. So I get to my friend Jason's house and we start talking about the car and the weird noise that it was making. I go, fire her up, and sure enough there is a knocking noise, but it sounds as if it is coming from the driver's side valve cover. So I feel rather relieved at this point. Well relief turns to pain as I revved it up slightly and the knocking got louder and then........Bang! In a clatter of noise she is finished. Oil has sprayed out from under the intake manifold and a light cloud of smoke fills the engine compartment. My friend's wife cranked the engine over while her husband and I investigate. Long story short, she threw a rod and it cracked the engine block right under the intake manifold. And to make matters worse, as I go over the rest of the car with a fine tooth comb, I find that the weather seal on the sunroof has failed and leaked all over the passenger side of the interior. So needless to say, I am sad and I am thinking that it is time for my car to be laid to rest. Patrick

Yeah brother, it is now. I just got back to the states a couple of days ago and my wagon has gone the way of the dinosaur, unfotunately for me. So needless to say, I have been debating parting her out, which really sucks in itself considering that I had gathered a bunch of random parts and electronics to improve her. -Patrick -

I've used Engine Restore in my Neon(yeah, I know, a Neon) when I used to own one. It seemed to do the trick after the second application. When I first bought it, I could tell it had been ridden hard and hung up wet, as the engine just felt like it wasn't up to snuff. But after a recommendation from a friend's dad who swore by it, I tried it. Like I said, it took about 2 applications before I noticed any kind of difference. The gas mileage went up slightly, compression test showed a slight increase of 4-5psi, and the engine smoothed out a bit too. That is my only experience with the stuff. All I can say is that I like the stuff. But if you feel uncomfortable putting additives into your engine, then don't do it. Nobody will ridicule you for it. Just remember that it is your car and only you can make the decisions as to what goes into it. -Patrick

Have you given a car stereo shop a try? They would most likely have a power distribution block that would clamp around your positive battery terminal, and would have multiple output ports on it. They are usually gold plated. You can probably get one on the cheap from eBay as well. I hope this helps. - Patrick

I am very glad to hear that you didn't get injured, nor the driver of the other car. YIKES! I would've soiled myself in that situation, or at least found the first rest stop and emptied the tank. Wow! That is crazy, but I'm still glad to hear that you and your car made it through with only minor damage. - Patrick

I'm sorry, but this is not correct. The 1995 Subaru Legacy that I just junked had vent visors and it didn't have window frames. It(the ventvisor) attaches with small metal clips that are mounted between the A pillar and the weatherseal. The bottom portion has small screw holes(comes with screws) that the bottom portion attaches to. Double-sided tape secures the upper portion to the body of the vehicle and creates a water tight seal so that water can't seep through and sneak attack you(Drip, Drip....what the?) while you have your windows cracked. I hope that that clarifies this. -Patrick -

I'm sorry to hear about your troubles as well. I know how you feel. My wagon is in Texas right now, and it needs some work from what my friend Jason has told me. It, at the least is going to need new timing belts and associated components, new crank bearings, A/C needs to be repaired, and not to mention, it is going to have to pass emissions as I am going to be PCSing to California in April. I have been thinking about sacrificing it, but I really don't want to. It is a very hard decision to make as you're d$#@ed if you do, and d&*%ed if you don't. Patrick -
I am going to give JDM Legacy GT seats a shot in my GL-10. They look alot like the seats in the '02 USDM WRXs. They are alot moe comfortable and have ALOT more bolstering than the OEM GL-10 seats. Patrick

If I'm not mistaken, don't the older Subarus have an air bleeder valve for the cooling system somewhere? You will have to pardon me because I have been away from mine for almost 4 years, but if they do, could it be possible that this is the location where it is supposed to be installed? Patrick

Oh yeah, and porting the wastegate is a piece of cake. If you can use a power drill, a screw driver, and a pair of needle nosed pliers, you can port the wastegate. All you need to do is get yourself some grinding stones, some tapping lube(WD-40 should work just fine), and remove the wastegate diaphram assembly. Then, fully extend the wastegate flapper open, give it a squirt of spray lube(don't over do it), take drill with said grinding stone attached(one that will fit inside the hole with a little room to spare) and go to town. Just beware not to make the hole larger than the wastegate flapper. Otherwise, you're asking for trouble and will need to acquire another exhaust housing and have to repeat the process all over(hopefully without repeating the overly enlarged hole!). After that, reattach turbo to manifold and away you go. Patrick

IIRC, the MAF is what tells the ecu to cut boost. Basically, when the MAF voltage maxes out, the ecu runs out of maps to sustain the amount of airflow, causing everyone's favorite friend Fuel Cut, to rear it's ugly head. Patrick

This is a bit off topic, well actually way off topic, but I just wanted to say that reading GD and Loyale 2.7 Turbo's conversation back and forth is very refreshing. Too bad we can't have more conversations like this on the forum about different topics. I'm very sorry for the interuption. Now back to your regular programming. Patrick
