Boost Gauge vac line question
4WDFrenzy replied to 4WDFrenzy's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Well see that's just the thing. I have 2 of those in the vacuum line and they help some, but not the way I would like. -
Boost Gauge vac line question
4WDFrenzy replied to 4WDFrenzy's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I teed my vacuum line into the line that goes to the stock fuel pressure regulator. That is where I found the closest connection. My gauge works fine at idle and max boost, it's just all the in between that I get the stupid needle wiggle. I want it to work like the one in our WRX, which is very smooth in it's movement. I think I read about the damper thing on the NASIOC, so maybe I'll have to track it down on there. -
New exhaust, Now RX sounds like a Toyota pickup????
4WDFrenzy replied to tizzle's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I have to agree with Noah(hope the name is right) on this one. Dynomax mufflers are great sounding and they do flow well. If you really want to quiet it down, go to the nearest O'Reilly autoparts store, ask them to see the Walker Muffler catalog. From what I can find, Walker makes some of the quietest, yet high flowing mufflers. They are kind of moderately priced. If you get a chance to, go and check them out. -

Well I know that a catalytic converter(high-flow or normal) will muffle alot of the exhaust sound. The only problem with this is, it will restrict your exhaust a bit. Adding a couple of resonators in line before the muffler should help to mellow the exhaust note to a more tolerable level. I hope this helps you. Patrick -
My wife and I recently purchased an '02 WRX Wagon and I have been looking at several modifications that aren't too in depth as we will only be here in the U.S. for another month, then the car will go into storage for the next 4 years. I have just recently purchased a splitter that mounts underneath the hood scoop and distributes the airflow evenly over the core of the intercooler. Well I am looking for something additional to do to it other than an aftermarket uppipe, downpipe, cold-air intake, etc. Anyway, I ran across a modification called the 3/16 mod. It claims to raise boost levels to a safe level and is supposedly superior over the stock piece. Well, my question is, is it worth buying?(Only cost like $10) If anyone could give me a little insight into this, it would be much appreciated. Thank You all in advance. Patrick

Boost Gauge vac line question
4WDFrenzy replied to 4WDFrenzy's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I'm assuming this is something that I can order or pick up at a Subaru dealership. I'll contact the dealership that I bought my WRX at. Well, Thank You to everyone for at least looking. Patrick -
Where can I find the little damper for the factory boost gauge on that comes on a WRX? This is going on the boost gauge for my GL-10. The reason why I'm asking is because I'm kinda tired of my needle bouncing around and would prefer smooth operation instead. If anyone has any info on this, please let me know. Thank You in advance. What is a good RPM to launch my car at?
4WDFrenzy replied to 4WDFrenzy's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Well, I think 2500RPMs is what I will be launching at. I went out earlier and practiced for a little while and was very impressed with the results. Funny thing is, when I got back on base, I had some little riceboy in a cavalier pull up next to me and start looking my car up and down with a big idiotic grin on his face. But the moment the light turned green, I was gone and he was left looking at my taillights, thanks to my launch technique. It was fun. Besides, if I hurt the clutch too much, it won't matter anyway. I have plans to buy an ACT or Centerforce clutch and brand new stock flywheel when I come back to the states, since I found out that a 95 Subaru Impreza(AWD) clutch will fit(8-7/8" dia./24T). -
OH MY?!!!

I need to get all the front sway bar bushings(chassis mount & end links). Too bad they don't make the front strut top hats in polyurethane. That would be awesome, and I definately would be in for those. But as I said, too bad.

Just thinking about what kind of suprises that you'll have in store in the future. You know, the kinda stuff that'll make people say,"Where the heck did you get that?!!," "What the H%@#?!!" and the ever popular,"HOLY $@#&!!!"

What is a good RPM to launch my car at?
4WDFrenzy replied to 4WDFrenzy's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I think if I launch at about 2800RPMs, I'll be okay. 4K just seems too high for me unless I try it with the Diff Lock off so that the tires will spin some. I'll probably try and start launching at 2500, then work my way up until I fell comfortable, but I'll probably never go up to 4000. And I guess I really don't have too much to worry about as far as driveline shock goes, considering the clutch kit that I installed came with a disc that has a 6 spring, sprung hub(kinda looks like a clutch disc from an ACT clutch kit or something), versus the factory 4 spring hub. -

After all the you know what that I went through to get that new clutch in, there is no way in you know where that I would dump the clutch. Besides the fact that a whole lot of driveline shock takes place when you do that, and with my luck, I'd wind up breaking the axles or shearing the gears in the tranny or something. I kinda figured on about 2800-3000RPMs to launch at would be good. -
Well now .......................Hmmmmmmmmm......................Well, okay that is certainly an interesting twist of events. That explains alot.

What turbo works best on EA82T ?
4WDFrenzy replied to sheppie62's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I got in touch with a company called Blaylock-Turbo, about getting my stock VF7 tweaked. I talked to Jim, and here is what he had to say: JIm Blaylock <sales@blaylock-turbo.com> wrote: Patrick we can bore out your compressor housing, put larger wheel in it and polish the housing for better air flow. We can lighten the turbine wheel for a little quicker spool up. Your cost is $400.00. This does not include basic rebuild. If you need everything rebuilt also before the upgrade the total cost is $795.00. Thanks, Jim -
That's cool. I wish you all the best at the dyno. Keep us posted. You won't tell us the price because you fly an X-Wing and the rest of us are stuck on the ground, right?

Sweet! Then I guess later on today I'll have to go out and start practicing my launches. After all, the "BIG DAY" is this upcoming Saturday. -
Wow?!! Do you have it on yet? If so how is it running?

Well my GL-10 likes to pull up on the front wheels and spin the heck out of them when you go past about 2800RPM in 2 lower gears(1st & 2nd). Should I flip on my diff lock for better traction? -

Well, the stock VF7 spools the fastest. The TD04 from a WRX is about the best turbocharger for the engine that would give you good all around performance. -

4WDFrenzy replied to 4WDFrenzy's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Well, it is turbocharged(EA82T w/ mods) and has a little IHI VF7 turbocharger that spools pretty darn quick. Anyway, my wife got orders to Kadena AFB, Okinawa for the next 4 years. So I can't take it with me and am going to leave it with my parents(who live locally) and our WRX is going into storage. It really sucks that I only get to enjoy it for a couple more weeks but I guess I have to make the best of it. -
Well, the time of year has come around and the local 1/8th mile track is opening once again. I plan on going out to the track and taking the GL-10 and see what kind of potential lies within and have a little fun before I have to put it away for 4 years. So, my question is, what would be a good RPM to launch it at? If anyone has any good advice, it would be much appreciated. Thank you. Patrick

4WDFrenzy replied to Bussaca's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I can't remember where I saw it, but I stumbled across a picture somewhere of a GL-10 sedan(right hand drive) drifting an uphill curve. I'll have to do some digging and see if I can find it again. Anyway, I would leave the tranny in 4WD mode and go at it. A couple of my friend's(Tyler & Eric), who just came back to the states from Okinawa, said that drifting a 4WD vehicle can be done, it just takes more skill to do it. They are big into drifting and D1 and are both building up drift machines(Eric has a '98 240SX[turbocharged], and Tyler is in the process of obtaining an older '91 240SX w/SR20DET swap). But both of them said that you know you are the stuff when you can drift a 4WD or AWD vehicle. It might be worth a shot to try and hone your skills at drifting a 4WD. -
I need some SERIOUS thoughts.
4WDFrenzy replied to WJM's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Well, I know when using a Mustang Dyno to dyno a 2WD vehicle, you have to add like 20% to whatever the dyno shows as the WHP. I know this because my friend Roderick has a fully built and turboed engine in his Integra and it showed 395whp@15psi before the turbo blew the intercooler pipe off(faulty clamp). The gentleman who was running the dyno said to add 20% to the 395whp and it would be the actual number, which is 474whp@15psi. But since the RX is 4WD, I'm not sure what kind of change it will show.
