I have been looking and studying my pcv(positive crankcase ventilation) system and was wondering what would happen if I was to remove the valve covers, install extra fittings for mounting either vacuum lines or breathers, and using the existing(factory) fittings for connecting to the pcv valve( via vacuum hoses and a tee to combine the two and go to the pcv valve). I was thinking about this design so that everything would be a little more straight forward and for the simple fact thatit would be like conventional PCV systems. Does anyone see any potential problems with this design? Thanks in advance. Patrick

I'd say between $150-$300. My GL-10 was rusted badly in a couple areas and had a fairly new motor, decent interior(digital dash), blown cv axle, smoked clutch, crappy paint, and I paid $500. So, I would haggle with the guy and see how low you could get him talked down to.

Performance parts for older Subes?
4WDFrenzy replied to Phaedras's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Right now I'm running 2-1/4" ID piping from the custom bellmouth downpipe back to the muffler. I also have a CATCO high-flow cat on it and a TopSpeed Pro1 canister muffler. With this exhaust setup, I can definately feel the top end power as well as retaining decent low end power. -

Yeah, but when those are not a even a remote possibility like when the car you have to work on is in the middle of a parking lot, it's night, it's 30 something degrees out, and you have a 10-15mph crosswind on top of it all(And this really happened to me). Sometimes you just have to adapt. You just got to remember not to bundle up so much that you can't accomplish what you need to get accomplished. -
EA82 Turbo Exhaust Qs

Yeah, but when you're working with kinda limited budget, it seems a bit out of reach. -

Hey, it's like 34 degrees here right now, and I just got done messing with the disty and changing plugs, does that qualify me? -lol- My parents say I've got to be either one of the best mechanics they know or the dumbest, because I'm the only one around here(Wichita Falls) who will go outside in the flippin' cold to complete a job concerning a car. I just hate starting a project(even in the cold) and leaving it half finished. -
Wow! Wham, bam, thank you ma'am. That deal went on and off the table quick.

If you are looking into adding to the engine's power producing potential, I can almost bet someone will say(other than myself), to purchase the TWE header and downpipe setup. Only problemo is, is that it is very expensive for the setup, but well worth it at the same time. -
Anyone ever cleaned their MAF?
4WDFrenzy replied to 4WDFrenzy's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
OK. For a minute there, I started to freak out. I was going to say that I was pretty sure that brake fluid would leave a residue behind that would cause dirt to stick to it. Well I feel much better now.-breathes sigh of relief- -

Now you are talking about brake fluid, like brake fluid that you put in your reservoir to make the car stop, right? -
Right now I have a Topspeed Pro1 canister muffler(2-1/4" straight through) along with a 16" resonator. It sounds real good and doesn't have that nasty raspy sound that most canister mufflers have, but best of all, you can really hear that unique sound that is associated with the boxer engines.

I might give the brake cleaner thing a try. Then again, I might wait until later today and get this stuff I saw at Autozone for cleaning sensitive electronics. I think I might also be in for a new 02 sensor as well(couldn't hurt I guess). -
I was just wondering if anyone has ever cleaned their MAF and if so, what did you use? I was told to use starting fluid because it is alcohol based, but I am under the impression that it would damage the MAF. If anyone can shed some light on this topic, I would very much appreciate it. Thanks in advance. Sincerely, Patrick

Don't feel bad. I haven't been able to find anything that will work except MegaSquirt and the HKS VPC(Vane Pressure Converter), and they get rid of the MAF all together.

Gettin' a little tired of my wagon!

UPDATE: Well, I got the stupid clamps on the new boot saturday night. The wife and I took the car out yesterday(had to stretch its legs cause we been driving the heck out of the WRX). It seemed to be okay until after we had stopped at a store that is about 3-4 miles from our house. When we came out and I started it up and turned the lights on, the rpms dropped. So I got a little peaved and took the car down this road that runs outside of the base and romped on it. Immediatly, the car had a totally different personality. The thing squalled the tires while accellerating, when I downshifted into second @ 40mph after some bunghole tried to cut me off. I don't understand it. One minute it runs great, the next it wants to take a dirt nap, but yesterday was definately a good day. -
Coping with a Subaru Addict

Is your dad looking to adopt?! Hehehe, just kidding. But I certainly would like to learn some of the cool stuff your dad knows about Subarus. Sorry about the addiction problem. I'm addicted too. It's something that is hard to get rid of ya know. Kinda gets under the skin, into the bloodstream, and into the bones. So i guess it's some kinda infection. -

This is a great thread!!! I think there is something wrong with my wife. She gets all giddy when I recieve parts for my GL-10, and also when those parts have been successfully fabricated onto the car and are in proper working order(Maybe it's because the car isn't all screwed up with me calling it select curse words while I diagnose the problem!). Look, she even suggested us purchasing the WRX wagon that we now own for goodness sake. She has Subie-on-the-brain syndrome. She says that sometimes I scare her when I road test the car. But I can tell she enjoys it too. Personally, I think she is becoming a boost addict and we all know how consuming that can be. -
what motor do i have?

I think your 85 is an EA81 and the 87 should be an EA82, but don't quote me on it. -
Aftermarket Catalytic Converter

I've got a Catco high-flow cat. I picked it up for $100 including installation. I have been thinking of getting it flanged on both ends, so I can take it off after inspection time and get a test pipe made for it. -
I have been contemplating removing my A/C as well. My compressor is making this high pitched sound that when the engine rpms are above idle, it sounds like I have a supercharger! LOL I had a guy that works at O'Reilly Autoparts ask me that last week. I need to find a bracket as well. Time to search the junkyards. Quick! To the Batmobile!!!

Ummmm, NO. I wanted to let everyone here in the Older Gen. Forum know that I got a new car. Not to be rude, but I'm not asking questions about it or anything, just giving some information to those who already know of my situation with my GL-10 from my other post(Gettin' a little tired of my wagon). That is why it was posted in the older gen. forum, that's all.

Well, last night my wife and I ventured up to Norman,OK to a place called Big Red Sports & Imports, with some friends of ours. We went there originally looking at a 99 Outback(N/A) for $10,988. We were just looking for something that was a little more reliable than the GL-10, nothing fancy, just the basics. The salesman, Kory, helped us out a bunch. But when it came time to look get financing done, the bank wouldn't give us the loan. Kory told us that it was because of the car's mileage(82K). So he asked us if there was anything else we would be interested in. My wife then blurts out, "what about the '02 WRX wagon?" Kory said," Well, lets go check it out." We proceeded out to the lot and he asked me if I had ever driven a WRX. I replied,"No, but I have ridden in one before." He said, "Good. Then you won't mind driving this one." Then he told me,"Get in!" I was kinda nervous, but no big deal though. He gave me a directions to get to this one little side road. Then he said to me, "Go ahead and open her up. I took one of the STi's down this road yesterday. This is a great road to rip up and down!" So I did as he said. The car was amazing. It handled like there was no tomorrow through the turns and the boxer engine's long continuous pull felt great. A few minutes later we went back to the dealership. He asked," Do you like this one?" My wife and I were all smiles and nodding yes. He then said,"Good, good. Then lets get the paperwork out of the way so you two can get this thing on the way home tonight." After that, everyone basically bent over backwards to get us into the car for the price and payments that we wanted. Thirty minutes or so later we were in the car, with a full tank of gas, smiles on our faces, and on our way home in the car that we wanted. If anyone is local and looking into a new car, hit up Big Red Sports & Imports. I can promise you that you won't be sorry. *Edit*: I posted the wrong year of the vehicle. It is an '02, not an '03. Sorry about the mixup.

Mine is staying in the GL-10 Wagon. I am trying to get all my ideas together and make a parts list of what I want to put into this project. But I'll let everyone know as soon as I start sourcing parts for my project. I plan on buying a new motor(or two) and having some major mods made to it or them. I'll have to keep in touch with everyone as I'm going to be in Okinawa for the next 4 years. I plan on doing a lot of junkyard hopping while I'm there, not to mention the countless performance shops that they have. So if anyone wants anything, I'll do my best to locate, acquire, and ship them.
