That is funny. I noticed the similarity to a Nissan when I first laid eyes on my GL-10 for the first time. But am I ever glad that my wagon is a Subaru and not a Nissan!....LOL Patrick

Rag_v2, if your engine has any little hoses running under the intake manifold, you may want to check them for cracks & leaks. They are some of the easiest to miss and hardest to replace, but well worth the effort and the peace of mind. It could be that one of them sprung a leak, sprayed coolant on your belt or alternator, in turn causing the reduced voltage shown on your gauge and also the increase in engine temp produced by the loss of engine coolant. Now this is just a theory, so don't qoute me on it or take it as fact. It is purely an example. It may give you a place to start looking when you go to repair your car. I hope this helps. Patrick

I had a similar situation happen to me about 5 years ago, while I was cruising down the highway in my '88 GL-10. Everything was going great, that is, until I went to pass a slow moving vehicle. As I downshifted and the turbo came online, the car began to lose power. I quick scanned my dash and noticed that my temp gauge was up higher than normal, and there was also the pungent aroma of antifreeze. Luckily, I was able to get off of the highway at the next exit(about 1/4 mile away) and pull into a service station parking lot to examine the engine. Well, to my suprise, there was steam coming out from under the intake manifold, but I couldn't make out exactly where it was coming from. To make a long story short, I limped it home after allowing it to cool off and it wound up being a cracked capillary hose under the manifold that I didn't replace. About 20 minutes later I had the problem resolved and was back on the road. Fun stuff. Anyway, that story was probably completely unnecessary, but I figured that I would share it. Patrick

More Lighting Questions
4WDFrenzy replied to Caramanos2000's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I'm not quite sure about the dash lights, but if IIRC, when I looked them up at Autozone they had them listed as 168s, but don't quote me on it since that was 5 years ago. I'm pretty sure that the license plate illumination lights are 194s. Just to be safe, I'd double check those numbers at your local autoparts store. I hope this, well, somewhat helps. Patrick -
Dyno #'s for Suberdave's Wagon
4WDFrenzy replied to suberdave's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Here are a couple of links to vids of his car on YouTube.com: The first one is of his car on the dyno and the second is him at the track. I found them one night while searching youtube for vids of older subarus. Patrick -
Dyno #'s for Suberdave's Wagon
4WDFrenzy replied to suberdave's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
YIKES!!! Wow, that much power must make for some real fun at the track or that unknowing, random ricer that decides he wants a little "contest of speed" to show up that old Subie. I'm glad to see that your car is doing so well. Man, it has come a looooooong way. Good job and Congrats on those awesome dyno numbers! Rock On Dave!!! Patrick -
Urgent: Drive shaft broke: 88 GL10 turbo AWD
4WDFrenzy replied to M45's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Not to be a pest or start any kind of fight, but you're wrong about this. The neutral safety switch is screwed into the transmission to prevent the vehicle from being started while in gear, thus preventing damage to the vehicle or any objects in the vicinity. It is a safety feature that keeps power from going to the starter solenoid when the transmission is in any gear shift position other than >PARK< or >NEUTRAL<. Patrick -
I wish I had pics of mine. Long story short, it worked, for the short term. From what my friend who is taking care of it says, yeah, it sucks now. But I used cheap flat black paint. Hopefully when I get back, it is getting the gloss black treatment complete with clear coat. Caleb, you need to post some pics of your paint job. It looks swell!!!! LOL Patrick

I'm not sure about the carb'd EA81, but it looks like an alternative for the EA82T guys and maybe even the guys who have done EJ20G conversions. It would definately be better than sucking hot engine compartment air into the engine. The "End User" would just have to make sure and not route it too low so as not to worry about ingesting water. WATER + ENGINE INTAKE = (Hydrolock) Patrick

Those BBS wheels would be sweet. I think if I decide to get some aftermarket wheels for the Draggin' Wagon, I will more than likely go with the 14 X 6s(White powdercoat) from Scorpion Subaru, or if I am feeling really froggy, do a 5 lug conversion, as it opens up the doors to numerous possibilities. But I am seriously considering the Scorpion Subaru wheels though given their price($185AU/wheel = $119.22USD/Wheel). The only thing that might wear a hole in the ol' pocketbook is the price for shipping from Australia to Texas. That might be the deal breaker right there. Check them out @:http://scorpionsubaru.com/index.html Patrick

To be honest, I would cut the wires to the old one and remove it. Then, I'm just assuming that the '93 you have is a parts car(yes/no?), I'd go and cut both ends of the harness off, splicing the harness end to the respective wires via solder covered by some heat shrink tubing, and Voila! Then if the blower motor fails again, you can just go to the parts store and purchase one for a '93 and just plug it in. That would be my take on the situation. Patrick

Loyale project destruction!
4WDFrenzy replied to 93Newbaru's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
WHOA! That is quite the story. Well I certainly hope that your GL doesn't give you as many problems. That poor Loyale sounded like it had had the snot beat out of it on many occasions and was just waiting to die. I wish you the best on your upcoming project and for all intensive purposes, I hope that your dream becomes a reality. Patrick -
Fan switch (87 GL wagon)
4WDFrenzy replied to SubaruWagon87's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
diablo_stallion3, if you are going to run dual fans, and do any rewiring, check with Autozone as they sell adjustable fan control switches. Then you have the option of making the fans kick on at a temperature of your choosing. Best of Luck to you. Patrick -
Fan switch (87 GL wagon)

Is the electric fan not turning on, or is the temp gauge not reading correctly? Patrick -
lookin for rims and hoodscoop
4WDFrenzy replied to doubi2's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
To answer your question, most of the 80's model Subaru wheels are interchangeable. You might also look for Pugs(Peugot wheels). IIRC, you could find them in 14" & 15", but I'm not too sure if they came bigger than that. If you are feeling like taking on a project(and you can find the right parts), you can do a 5-lug conversion and run just about any 5 x 100 lug wheels, clearance(width wise) provided of course. Hood scoops, well, for ease of installation, find one that measures width wise, a little less than the width of the raised center section of the hood. These can be found for relatively cheap on eBaymotors and usually attach to the hood via 3M double sided tape. There are a few that you might actually have to drill holes so that it will bolt on. In conclusion though, there really isn't a "Right" or "Wrong" scoop that you can install. It is all in what how you want your car to look and the effectiveness of the underhood airflow that the scoop can create. I hope that this helps. Patrick -
lookin for rims and hoodscoop
4WDFrenzy replied to doubi2's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Mikeshoup and Caboobaroo are 100% correct. The RX never came with a hood scoop. Only the XT coupe did. Come on dude, use some common sense here. The man's profile shouldn't make any difference. You would be suprised at the variety of people who mod cars. If your "assumptions" about him were correct, technically, you'd still be wrong. The hood on his car IS considered a modification. No harm intended, just pointing out the facts. Never judge a book by it's cover. Maybe this gentleman has more on his plate to worry about than modding his car. I have a stock '02 WRX hood scoop on my GL-10 wagon, and it looks just fine. I had to mold the outer edges to the hood. I'm still not done, but I also have limited interaction with my car considering my current location(my car is in Texas). Patrick -

Underhood Oil Leak...Litterally!...Update
4WDFrenzy replied to goatcheez's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I wonder if the seal to the oil pump could have a split in it somewhere? If it were small enough, I'd think that the oil pump could still provide adequate pressure without it showing up on the gauge. I wish I had a more definite answer for you, but I have been away from my Subie for about 3-1/2 years so maybe someone else will chime in and be of more assistance. I sincerely hope that you get this problem sorted out soon as I know how much of a pain in the..........Hands it can be to work in the cold. Patrick -
Well, I guess you can't win 'em all. That still sucks, but at least it's a name that you can live with. Take it easy and Welcome to the Board!!! Patrick

Why did you have to re-sign up? I was able to just log right back in with no problem after the first "Terrorist" attack(*grumbles). I'm sorry to hear that you had to change your name. That's no fun. Well, Welcome Back! Patrick

fuel pressure regulators on ebay?
4WDFrenzy replied to turbo5speedgl's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Well that kinda sucks. I have one on the Draggin' Wagon and it works just fine. It was a no name adjustable FPR that I was given to me by a friend while parting out his car. His car died before he ever got a chance to install it. So, I installed it on my GL-10 and never had any problems out of it. Perhaps it is just another thing that I will have to replace when I get back. Patrick -
Hey everyone. I was just wondering, for those who have rebuilt an EA82T before, how hard is it to replace the rod bearings? I am planning on attempting to fix my engine after I get back Stateside before I go and throw $800 at a new engine. In case anyone is wondering, Yes, I am mechanically inclined. So, what's the verdict? Patrick

Mine actually stays cold even with just leisurely driving speeds. I was really, and pleasantly surprised. I know what you mean about the VF7 being inefficient at 11psi. I was told by some of the members here on the forum about that when I first began to mod my car. I have polished the inside of the compressor housing(to a light mirror finish) and I bored out the wastegate port to keep boost creep to a minimum. I really would like to get the exhaust snail polished out though. Another thing that I had done was a custom bellmouth downpipe. I will more than likely play around with it some more and see how much more I can squeeze out of it before I install a TD04. Patrick
