2nd generation brat roll bar
65stangy replied to 65stangy's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
We are in agreement. I want a high bar, it was just a comment about style of high bar. To me, the bar looks better when the brace tube that comes off the wheel well intersects at about the roof line like on first gen style instead of angling all the way to the top of the roll bar. -
2nd generation brat roll bar

I think I want to pattern mine after a first gen version. I looked at a u-tube video from 1984 that showed a new brat with all the dealer options on it, and the high top roll bar just looked out of proportion with the brace pipe going all the way to the top bar. Made it look too bulky. Naked Buell, what did you have to modify on the bar that you retrofitted? -

could you possibly send me a pic if what you have skishop69? If it is a single tube across the top of the cab, I might be able to take all of your other dimensions but extend the height some to clear the max headrest height. you could try to post it here, or text it to 541-969-2514. Thanks! -

What did you use? I have heard of people modifying a toyota or an s-10 roll bar. -
2nd generation brat roll bar
65stangy replied to 65stangy's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Thanks for the reply skishop69...I have seen several images of ones that look right to me, but no way to be able to contact the owners. Honestly most of them look like gen1 versions that have been modified to fit. I just thought that if there was a dealer option version that was designed to work with jump seats, seatbelts etc... that it would simplify the fabrication by having some baseline specs. -
I am wanting to know if there was indeed a factory roll bar for 2nd generation brats, and if so, if anyone has some detailed pictures with measurements so that I could get one fabricated. I am trying to keep with a stock appearance. Mine does have the jump seats so I think I need the higher version for head clearance. Any information and/or pictures would be very much appreciated.

Could you re-post the graphics you are looking at? It seems to have quit working. I would be interested if you had a 2nd gen graphic.

OK My radio is a different model, but it looks like the color combo's are the same, as it looks like you have the same 5 wires. Manual says: Black: Ground Yellow with black: Left rear speaker Yellow with red: Right front speaker Yellow: Front left speaker Gray: Right rear speaker I hope this helps.

I am guessing you either sold out on these, or never got them printed?? I can't seem to get your link to work to see the pic, and I don't see shirts on your website.

Yes, I got the radio functioning great after I received the manual for the radio that identified all wires. The blue wire is 12v ignition. I chose not to add the cassette deck because it did not have one originally. The only thing I never got to work was the illumination of the display, but I am thinking the bulb may be blown. I have had big issues getting pictures to upload on this site, but I could attempt to scan the radio manual for you if I had an email address to send it to. Not sure which radio you have, but the wire combos are pretty similar.

Ea81 brat rebuilt ready to reassemble
65stangy replied to Norcalbratcap's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
The ball and spring are inside the oil pump housing, so unless you disassembled it, the O ring is all that you need to worry about. I am reasonably certain that the "right" side of the engine would be the passenger side. -

Having just replaced my oil pump recently, I can tell you that there is an O ring that goes in the area you referenced. Guaranteed it will leak like crazy without it. As far as torque...Because everything is primarily sealed with O rings, and the bolts are pretty small, I just went snug plus a quarter turn or so. I am sure there must be a spec somewhere, but for sure don't go crazy. I can't help you on the push rod question. I do have a FSM, and will see if I can find anything for you. -
Correct center cap color for my 86 brat
65stangy replied to 65stangy's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Hmmm. I am going to be in need of gold targa stripes as well as the unleaded decal...Maybe I need to call my supplier back and increase my order. I wonder how the cost measures up against the guy that reproduces those targa stripes? Or if you need to worry about buying one from Subaru that has been aging on the shelf for 30 years... -

Cool, and it is confirmed that blue ones are still available from Subaru. I have 4 coming. Somewhere around 15 bucks apiece. -

I had no idea there were green ones. I have it from an authority that for 86 they should be black or blue, but can't seem to get a firm answer as to which. I have someone that says they can get blue ones from Subaru, so I am hoping he is right as that is my preference, and it doesn't seem anyone will ever know the difference -

I have been pouring through images of brats online trying to find a historic photo with some detail...Two of the low mileage survivors appear to have faded blue center caps. Are you sure they are obsolete from Subaru 86bratman? I thought someone told me that you could still get them... -
My 86 had clips and bolts. I think 4 per flap. And my headliner is padded vinyl, but might be different depending on DL or GL.

Vinyl paint color for tan interior
65stangy replied to Downwash77's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I recently attempted to match the tan interior on my brat radio console (which was blue) with some of the valspar brand aerosol that is meant to bond with plastic, and while it did bond fairly well, I was unhappy with the color match, as well as the fact that it wound up much shinier than what I was attempting to match, and ended up continuing to search for the correct factory color of console. A custom mixed color would be much better as suggested above, but you may still have differences in sheen. -
Thank you. I was concerned about strength. While I do not plan to have passengers other than slow in town stuff, I would like it to be as safe as possible. It did not appear that the boxed channel that is on the under side of the bed could be reached for an attachment point without welding a long tab on the front side of the seat frame.

I was looking at your jump seat install and was wondering if you have some close up pics of where you actually bolted. I have a set I am getting ready to add to my 86 and am interested in how other people did it. I was also curious about your roll bar...did you fabricate it?

Any electrical gu-ru's out there?

Filament was burned in two, so yes it was blown. -

Thank you DaveT, that is what I thought. It always bothers me some to have a blown fuse and not a reason for why it blew...but it was like that when I bought it. I will be monitoring to see if I have any other issues, but for now, I am very happy to have everything functioning as it should. -

65stangy replied to 65stangy's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Hi Pksjeep, Since replacing the mentioned blown fuse the clock has been working perfectly. I am assuming there must be two different power sources for the clock, one for while the ignition is on, and another to hold the memory when it is off.
